Review

'...a remarkable book for a world that rarely deals with the whys and wherefores of suffering....This is practical theology at its best.' -- George Grant'The Tada-Estes team gives us a God-centered analysis of God's purposes in the pains and grief's of his human creatures. This book packs a tremendous punch, and you do not have to be in distress when you read it to be mightily enriched and encouraged.' -- J.I. Packer'Trouble has a way of damaging our perception of and appreciation of God. But never again - not after reading this book. By two who have cut through the fog to see God clearly even when it hurts, we are led to know his love, tears, and ultimately, his joy.' -- Dr. Joseph Stowell

From the Back Cover

If God is loving, why is there suffering? What's the difference between permitting something and ordaining it? When bad things happen, who's behind them--God or the devil? When suffering touches our lives, questions like these suddenly demand an answer. From our perspective, suffering doesn't make sense, especially when we believe in a loving and just God. After more than thirty years in a wheelchair, Joni Eareckson Tada's intimate experience with suffering gives her a special understanding of God's intentions for us in our pain. In When God Weeps, she and lifelong friend Steven Estes probe beyond glib answers that fail us in our time of deepest need. Instead, with firmness and compassion, they reveal a God big enough to understand our suffering, wise enough to allow it--and powerful enough to use it for a greater good than we can ever imagine

This book is not for the skirmish but for those who are honesty looking to see God in the midst of our sufferings. If you like how Max Lucado, writes Steve Estes has a comparable writing style to him. Joni poses hard questions about how God deals with our sufferings and what is His agenda by allowing them to happen. I particularly like how she uses other people's trials to explain her points. This book was instrumental in helping me deal with my wife's cancer and eventual passing and where was God in it. So a shout to Joni and Steve for the book.

In 1999, I became disabled with chronic pain. I was so angry with God, I didn't talk to him for two years. I don't buy that "we don't always know God's plan" line given to people who go through horrible things. He is, and therefore, He is omnipotent. My disability had a reason. I also don't buy "God's ways are mysterious." Not usually. He did tell us how He does things. I'm just not that good at figuring it out.In the beginning of this book, Joni said not to read it if you're still angry. I did anyway. My heart softened through the book. The logic of God making me disabled is...well, logical. She's right. I do need the reminder that I need Him more than most. I was raised on "God helps them who help themselves." (The most often quoted Bible verse that's not in the Bible, nor is it connected to the Bible.) God helps them who need it. We ll need it.The day I remember that may be the day the chronic pain disappears. I've lived the life of Jonah. He's got a lot of work to do in me before that day hits. Thank God, He got His message into a couple of his kids so they can teach the rest of us, who needed this message. A must-read, for anyone who has ever asked God, "Why me?"

This book has changed my life. I never understood why a loving God allows suffering to those who don't "deserve" it. Joni and her co-author Steve Estes write in a clear, down to earth, sometimes humorous, sometimes heart breaking narrative that makes God real to me. I understand His character like I never did before. I realize that I am here for reasons that transcend the world view of a persons' value. My husband and I read it aloud together and it opened our eyes to the larger picture of our story within God's plan for us. We as caretakers and chronically ill, it is inspiring and helpful!

Incredible sharing about suffering, pain and problems written by one who has been and continues to walk through those hard places (Joni is a quadriplegic.) She has learned what it means to trust the Lord for meaning, direction and daily confidence in God's plan for life. I have read this book many times. Sometimes straight through, other times starting in the middle of the book according to my need at the time. I have underlined the parts that I want to easily go back to and remember and the Bible verses that are particularly significant. I have learned what the Sovereignty of God means for those who trust Him.

The Holy Spirit spoke to me through this book. The expression, "When we pray, we speak to God: but when we read, God speaks to us" is most definitely my experience with this book. After reading "When God Weeps', I truly understand that all my earthly sufferings are for my good and the greater good of others, if I trust in God. I now look upon my adversities as blessings because they lead me to this book along with an intense deepening of my faith. I have read numerous books, too many to count, trying to understand why my life, from childhood on, was riddled with abuse, betrayal, grief and loneliness. After reading "When God Weeps", I need not read another book other than the bible. I will be purchasing many copies of this book to give to friends, family members, and enemies who are suffering and questioning their faith. Thank you to the authors of "When God Weeps" for allowing the Holy Spirit to speak through you....God bless you both!

This best work on suffering I have ever read. Steve and Joni unpack first hand a personal walk through suffering as they have strive to make meaning of the suffering thru the lens of the bible. They have done a commendable job helping folks like me in need of a biblical peek understanding the meaning of suffering as I walk with my family down the road of leukemia. Read it and weep for joy in times of suffering.

This book gently ushers one through the stages of understanding how our the hard things in life (personal tragedies, loss, pain, suffering) not only affects us but God as well. And understanding how we manage this connects to a greater good. Scripture is referenced throughout to further illustrate and support the situations we face. Joni and Steven are able to take this and apply it to our lives but not discounting the emotions tied to the process of experiencing and processing hurts, losses, and tragedies. It also illustrates God's vision for us and how much we are loved by Him. And how we can deepen that relationship with Him.

Started well ... no rhythm very scattered near the end. Author is a interesting person but he and his writing seems schizophrenic. It’s basically him sharing his random thoughts with us the reader, but there is no conclusion no real insight just a random stream of consciousness. I was hoping for more.

This book is worth the price if you are fascinated by Terence McKenna as the author, a devotee, has an extensive knowledge of him. The first section focuses on Terence and his insights. Otherwise a self indulgent account of a relapsing pathetic drug addict, impossible for me to finish. If you want to be inside the muddled self centered mind of a person struggling with addiction you might rate it higher than me.

Overall, the book was ok. The author does a great job writing about Mckenna; those were the parts of the book that I liked: in particular, chapters 1 & 2. I stopped reading after the section on DMT... that part of the book seemed so painfully irrelevant, so scattered, and the next chapter seemed to be going right along in the same direction... I just had to put it down. Sorry, Tao.

Tao Lin's unique language, which synthesized his experiences with Terence McKenna, psychedelics, and Kathleen Harrison, wormed its way into my heart, soul, and actual dreams at night. I learned a lot of new things that I can't quite put into words.

I selected this book to read during 26 hours of travel. Parts were interesting and engaging, but the excitement was not sustainable

Enjoyed a lot. Felt good about the psychedelic stuff. If you've listened to a lot of Mckenna some parts feel familiar but it's fun to read Tao extrapolating from that and compare with ideas/events from his own life, like he also does with Weston A. Price and Riane Eisler. I like how he doesn't completely subscribe to any one view of the modern world. He seems to simultaneously be able to view a lot of parts of it as bleak and other parts as exciting and even hopeful. I think he took Terence a little too seriously about the 'I don't believe anything' thing. He said that a lot but it still feels, to me at least, like he strongly leaned towards Novelty Theory being true, and was also firmly rooted to the need for an Archaic Revival. He often seemed to me like a 'True Believer,' but one who was savvy enough to know how skeptical people were of both experts and evangelicals and so said things like that he only had 'models' (but I think it's only the top level stuff--things that seemed obvious to him, like that psychedelics would have to become important for a positive future outcome for humanity --that I think he firmly held to. A lot his ideas he did probably, it seems, view as expendable) But since I kind of believe that stuff it didn't really bother me.The book also encouraged me, through reading about Tao's experience with and gratefulness towards it, to begin again to use cannabis with a new attitude of viewing it as it's own intentional helper. I like this new view and how it's making me feel. I wanted to see some more things about the relationship between psychedelics and spirituality. Terence said different things. Like he sometimes said they were obviously intertwined, maybe earlier in his career i'm guessing, and then other times said stuff like he wasn't sure they had much to do with each other. I wanted (at some point before reading the book, imagining what the book was going to be about) to hear about Tao's view on the matter, but maybe it wasn't considered to be interesting or relevant or maybe it was not considered at all. The back of the book said stuff about 'what happens after death?' but that wasn't really talked about except for repeating without not a lot of examination Terence's 'death is a release into the the imagination.' Realizing now that I'd been assuming that a lot of people reading the book would be familiar with Terence's ideas but I overestimated the overlap of people who are interested in him and Tao because of his (Mckenna's) prevalence on Tao's online, (mainly Twitter it seems) presence, and that maybe to a lot of people these are going to be 100% new ideas which will, due to their newness, have a large effect on them, which seems exciting (just to have a lot of people discussing, or maybe just thinking about, interesting ideas, even ones that are maybe smirked at by certain different kinds of people). One of my favorite parts of the book was in the epilogue when Tao feels depressed and poignantly assures himself, despite the depressive thing of it seeming permanent, that there would come times that he would feel better. I view 'Trip,' or at least a lot, of it as kind of a culmination of the last months or maybe years of Tao's online presence, having followed probably all of it. I view the new, before-unseen parts, like his detailed trip reports and a lot of the Kathleen Harrison stuff as a sort of 'bonus.' I intuit that there are more things I vaguely feel like I can convey about my experience of reading 'Trip,' but am self-conscious about how long this review is for an Amazon comments section, and am so going to stop typing after the next sentence. I greatly appreciate everything Tao Lin writes makes me feel more interested in art and less alone in the world, and I feel massively grateful for him having communicated his Mckenna-influenced worldview and sharing his often-convincing view of and beliefs about both modern and general living.

Lin is hyper-detailed, seemingly socially awkward, brilliant, acute, exploratory, brave and curious. While at times he seems to go into too much detail about mundane ongoings, I'm thinking that's the point. He describes recordings down to the second, pays acute attention to everyone he interacts with, and places it humorously and starkly in context. "Trip" is beautiful, made me feel nervous, anxious, excited, sad, giddy and curious- I respect Lin and see quite a bit of myself in him.

While the book lacks the quiet desperation that colors Tao’s earlier work, it’s made up for in an ever-researching, optimistic ‘trip’ towards recovery.

Lipstick Traces: A Secret History of the Twentieth Century, Twentieth Anniversary Edition, by Greil Marcus

Review

A coruscatingly original piece of work, vibrant with the energy of the bizarre happenings it maps out. (Terry Eagleton New York Times Book Review)That Marcus can kick off and end his exhaustive, but always clear-headed, cross-epochal trek with the Sex Pistols―and make it all cohere―is but one indication of how fully he meshes the academy and the gutter. (Katherine Dieckmann Village Voice Literary Supplement)Lipstick Traces has the energy of its obsessions, and it snares you in the manner of those intense, questing and often stoned sessions of intellectual debate you may have experienced in your college years. It was destined, in other words, to achieve cult status. (Ben Brantley New York Times)In 1989, Harvard University Press published Lipstick Traces, the second book by the American writer and critic Greil Marcus. It was a dazzling creation, mapping out an untold 'secret history' which connected the Sex Pistols, the Dadaists, the Parisian événements of 1968, that legendary subversive clique the Situationist International and an Anabaptist revolt in 16th-century Germany, led by a notorious libertine named John of Leyden. Among the book's most ardent fans, it sparked real epiphanies… It stands as a singularly idiosyncratic product of a genre-cum-tradition rooted in the business of writing about musicians and the whirl of ideas that once surrounded them… [Marcus] manages some of the finest music writing ever to make it on to the page… My 20-year-old copy of Lipstick Traces is the one book I would save from my proverbial burning house. (John Harris The Guardian 2009-06-27)For anybody who wants to go deeper into the ontology of an idea that animates a kind of music, or is illuminated by that music, read Greil Marcus's Lipstick Traces, just reissued in an expanded edition for the book's twentieth anniversary. I often say that Traces is the best book ever written about music, even though it's not actually about music: it is about the life of an idea. (Sasha Frere-Jones New Yorker online 2009-10-21)I first read Lipstick Traces as a penniless traveler, hiding in the bathroom of a late-night express train from Cologne to Berlin. My paranoia was considerably eased as I delved into the lives of various misfits and aesthetic revolutionaries throughout the twentieth century. As dawn broke and the train pulled into the station, I disembarked, feeling not shell-shocked from the conductor's repeated passes to my stall, but decidedly refreshed. (J. Scott Burgeson East Bay Express 1998-01-01)The 'secret' of Marcus's history is its poetry…widely separated persons and events call out to each other and 'connect' precisely because so many of ordinary history's causal and syntactic arrangements have been positively negated. (Jerome McGann London Review of Books 1989-01-01)Greil Marcus has developed an ability to discern an art movement, or an entire country, lurking inside a song. (New Yorker 2004-01-01)Probably the most astute critic of American popular culture since Edmund Wilson. (D. D. Guttenplan London Review of Books 2007-01-01)

Think non-linear. Think connective. This book isn't exactly art history or criticism, it isn't a manual on how to start an artistic revolution, it isn't sociological theory - but it touches on all these.Marcus traces currents of thought and action in musical and artistic "movements" in an illuminating and inspiring way that swings from such 20th century horrors as Nazi death camps to Michael Jacksons' "Thriller", although he gets bogged down in the second half with the "lettristes" who really, from his description, don't sound exciting enough to spend so much time on. Okay, letter poetry, sounds stupid, what next? The person this book would be perfect for is the edgy artist who needs some instigation (the person who recommended it to me), intellectual "punk rock" fan (I might qualify), or the anarchist with a taste for literature (who I am mailing my copy to).If you are unfamiliar with the situationists, the sex pistols, the dadaists, European revolutions, etc. then this book is a good starting point. (I'd never heard of Guy Debord but the extensive quotes from "Society of the Spectacle" convinced me to rush out and read that, too.)

Greil's book a gem and gives the very best description of the Dada movement that I've ever read and I'm an artist, and taught on the university level for 25 years. All that plus he's fun to read.

Terrific, indescribable, indispensable contribution to cultural history. If you're at all interested in where "today" came from, check out this fabulous item.

brilliant. ihave add. :)

Buy this, read it. Now. A compendium of history (cultural studies?) spanning Benjamin and Horkheimer, Debord and the LI/Situationists, to proto punk and Malcolm McClaren and the Sex Pistols.

Without even commenting on the actual content, the style of this book is the complete opposite of our current oversimplified, dumbed down swill. The prose is dense and stream of consciousness styled, and necessarily complex. Greil Marcus drills down deeply, as far back as medieval times to synthesize an explanation of the Punk movement. He used documented but suppressed or forgotten historic events and movements to prove that Punk is not simply raw youthful rebellion, but part of a larger, self-validating philosophical paradigm. This coherency of this paradigm has evolved over the centuries, and it is never articulated in readily accessible form, but always lurking in the shadows. And it had repeatedly caused radical, worldwide change. Read this book if you dare, and if you can. Embrace complexity.

It's interesting since we've became of consumers meta formerly known as the genre, retro, derivative packaging to occasionally hear tale of newness as it was experienced. Before it was clear that it was actually something.

So far, the condition & content of the book have completely met my expectations (of which there were not many but had it been a piece of crap, my rating would have reflected this). I've found no complaints, just trying to keep up with the pacing of the book that Greil Marcus has provided which is quite rapid and jumps around in time quite a lot while loading the text heavily with historical, cultural references that at times escape me. It's a lot to take in at once but I'm enjoying this product nevertheless.

I have an older model 4qt. pressure cooker that I bought off qvc years ago. I have a few tried & true favorite recipes that my family loves & several IP cookbooks with great, tasty looking ideas. So when I saw the Everyday Mexican cookbook, I immediately bought it, because who doesn’t love Mexican?Well, let’s see - the book is full of recipes, yay! The chapter layout makes sense, ya know, vegetables, rice, soup, type of meat, etc. There’s a regional map of Mexican Cuisine with an explanation of how each location plays a role in the different types & styles of dishes. Recipes are labeled for lifestyle & diets. And the author includes a descriptive blurb with each recipe as well. But the only pictures in the book are generic looking dishes that lie on the page dividing each chapter. For example, one page is a number of individual chili’s lying on a flat surface. Wow. One page is a bowl of soup, woo. One page is a bowl of rice pudding. I was grateful for the label on that one or I would have thought it was oatmeal. At the beginning of the Sweets & Desserts chapter!Sure, I can google each recipe to see what it is, but pictures are what draw you in & get your attention, especially when you’re not sure what something is or even what it’s supposed to look like when made right. So, I have a book of what I hope are great recipes. But I’ll be honest with ya - I have no idea what more than 90% of these dishes even are. And my taste buds are just not excited by a whole bunch of words. Ya know that saying, “a picture is worth a thousand words”? Well, that definitely applies to cookbooks.

This book is full of recipes, however, there are absolutely no one-pot meal recipes, which is the primary reason I have an Insta-Pot. I'm sure I could go through and experiment with combining some of the sides and dishes with cook times, but I can't be bothered. Most of these recipes also require ingredients that you may not have on hand, causing you to do a bit more planning, and it does a lot of referrals to other recipes (in the book) as part of the ingredients for some. I really don't want to to multi-stage Insta-pot cooking when preparing a meal. All in all, not really for me, but if you're just looking for Mexican recipes to make in your Insta-pot, it should be good for you.

I first made “shredded chicken tacos a la Mexicana” - followed it exactly, and it made chicken soup - there was so much liquid it was difficult to eat in tacos because it was so wet. The next recipe I’m attempting is the chili relleno chowder- at the top it says “quick release” but in the recipe itself it says “natural release” - which adds a lot to the cook time. As others have stated here, very few of the recipes can be made without first making chili pastes or home made salsa, with the exception of mole chicken, which suggests using a jarred mole sauce. The recipe for Arroz con Pollo lists ingredients that never get added in the instructions.

Good selection of atypical recipes.

This cookbook is awesome!!! I love how it was written. The writer gives you perfect descriptions on the reciepes without being too wordy. The graphics are super cute. The reciepes are spot on.

So many yummy recipes

One of the best cookbooks I've owned. Step by step easy instructions and WOW! the recipes turn out amazing.

Makes my Mexican recipes quicker and easier. They are delicious.
