Everything was wonderful as to the delivery and the book as a product, but the translation took beautiful old English (middle English?), and translated it to modern speak. Julian of Norwich spoke of God as being "homely" as in family, kin, a loved one from home and reduced it to "familiar" or "friendly". It also had, perhaps a feminist angle as "men" was translated as "people". In doing so I believe the translators insistence that she was faithful to the intent was truthful as far as it goes, but it lost most of the charm, and warmth that a more readable translation, while keeping with as much of the original language would permit, would have conveyed.
"THE light is Charity, and the measuring of the light is done to us profitably by the wisdom of God. For neither is the light so large that we may see our blissful Day, nor is it shut from us; but it is such a light that we may live meedfully, with travail deserving the endless worship of God."Julian of Norwich was a true English mystic (c. 1342-1420). Her book is nothing more than the recapitulation of the Christian belief. That part of the above quote i. e. "it is such a light in which we may live meedfully (rewardingly), with travail deserving the endless worship of God." is just the saying of all of what I want to do in this life.I cannot praise Julian of Norwich enough for her English and also for how much as an example she has been in giving me direction to work, to live, and to heal.These are mainly what she says that might be worthwhile:"For our natural Will is to have God, and the Good Will of God is to have us.""God is all that is good, as to my sight, and the goodness that each thing hath, it is He.""the continual seeking of the Soul pleaseth God full greatly:""the cause while he suffereth (it to be so) is for [that] He will of His goodness make us the higher of Him in His bliss.""the more the soul seeth of God, the more it desireth Him by His grace.""He is the Head and we be His members. To which members the day and the time is unknown, when every passing woe and sorrow shall have an end, and the everlasting joy and bliss shall be fulfilled;""It is His office to save us: it is His worship to do [for] us, and it is His will [that] we know it.""Christ alone did all the works that belong to our salvation,"Thus we see the harmony of the interplaying of creation, fall, redemption, and salvation, ringing throughout.Probably one of the greatest books in my life.
I hate to be the bearer of bad news, however, the newest edition of this beloved and wonderful text, Revelations of Divine Love by future Saint Julian of Norwich, ISBN 9781548722753 , as displayed in the "look inside" feature on the listing page, is, most unfortunately, an exceptionally cheap edition.To explain, the Warrack translation, by far the best in my opinion, has been printed time and again to various results. In this edition, existing as both paperback and digital, where the text in the digital version of this book is clean and crisp, the text in the physical, paperback edition, is exceptionally PALE. While the paper used to make this book appears, at first glance, to be of a decent quality, it is actually quite porous and a bit too thin, resulting in a great deal of bleed through, what readers often call "ghosting", such that you see a shadow of the text on the back of the paper cast very clearly through the page, as you are attempting to read it. Rather than use higher quality, thicker, denser paper, the publisher of this text chose to simply dial back the amount of ink they used in printing on the pages.And so, as to the end result, this text is very difficult to read. It is both pale, almost gray in appearance, and plagued by ghosting from the words printed on the back of the pages. I recommend selecting another edition of this wonderful text, if you actually wish to be able to read it. My search for the perfect edition continues. Where the layout of this volume is wonderful, the pale text and bleed through make it a failed attempt. They could fix it, using higher quality paper and slightly bolder text, even going up a font size, but the issue of the paper, governing the choice to use so little ink, would have to be dealt with first.Good luck in finding the right edition for you.

I liked it but not a lot happening in book 2 once again feeling like it was mostly another money tactic. The final book will only be just over 200 pages. This story could have been easily condensed down into 1 book for the cost of 1. I feel like this is a money hungry tactic to milk customers. I will buy the final book in March but I won't allow myself to get suckered in to this over priced tactic again. I will be finished paying these prices for a small amount of writing. She only hurts her own sales by doing this.
The story continues with Cato & Siena. As I got further into this book I kept thinking of how Cato's brother Bates reminded me of Cane Barsetti from the Buttons & Lace Series. I don't like to include spoilers in my reviews but I will say you won't be disappointed with the progression of Cato & Siena's relationship. Siena is a strong woman, much like other women in Penelope Sky's books. So the question is who is the real Dictator, who has the most power in the relationship? We'll have to wait for the next book- The Tyrant- to find out.

Penelope Sky has hit a homerun with this new series.The Dictator picks up right where The Banker left off without missing a beat. Siena and Cato’s story continues in dramatic fashion and we are left holding on for the bumpy, sexy, passionate ride. The passion between these two is unmistakable and highly combustible. Their story is hot, emotional, and draws you in from the beginning. Siena must face the consequences of her choices and Cato must deal with the undeniable pull he feels toward the woman who betrayed him. Combine Siena’s stubbornness, Cato’s anger, Bates’s hatred, and you find yourself in the midst of a tale you cannot put down. The sex scenes are seriously some of the hottest I’ve read yet. They. Are. SIZZLING. It was an unnecessary book. No real ground was covered in this book. This book was a gimmick to get our money. I thought the second book would have more excitement. If this was all there is to Cato, then she could have told this story with one book. Book 2 should have been about their baby being born and Cato and Siena really loving each other AND his brother accepting Siena. Book 3 could have been about this family's struggle to stay together and crush all their enemies. THEIR baby or Siena being kidnapped...
Don’t get me wrong ..... I love Ms Sky’s work and 3.5 isn’t shabby but this one just was a little anticlimactic for me. I know I’m comparing it to the Buttons series ( which was great), but I expected something to happen other than them getting back together because, come on, we all knew the would.
Cate and Siena, together are a pair. You just gotta love them. He loves her so much, but he doesn't want to admit it. When he went to France to get her, had me tearing up. That was such a tender moment between them. Cato was showing his true self then. I hope they make it as a couple. Bates, I don't like at all. He doesn't have any redeemable qualities in my opinion. He's too hateful and greedy. I don't want him to get his own story, if Penelope is thinking of giving him one. He's heartless and mean. Landon Russo, Siena's brother, is a sweetheart. He deserves his very own HEA. I cannot wait to read the next book. I love this series!ðŸ‘
If you have read book one you know Siena is pregnant with Catos baby, and she has signed legal papers that say if Cato dies or seperates all his personal belongs and bank accounts go to the baby. And his half of the company goes to Bates his brother that has hated Siena from the start and felt she was after Catos money. They are hoping this will calm Bates down as he has wanted to kill Siena ever since he thought she betrayed his brother and has promised to kill her after the baby comes. Great series can hardly wait the 3 weeks for the 3rd book. Great characters and wonderful story I enjoy reading a little about the underworld.
Siena is getting her man whether he wants to give in or not.......it makes you cheer for love no matter how it began. She makes you respect and love her.......I know Cato is feeling overwhelmed by this enigma, but she is just what he needs. I hope to see someone challenge her love for him by coming after him, so we can really see her protect her family. Can’t wait for next installment

Michael Rabiger has directed or edited over 35 films, founded the Documentary Center at Columbia College, Chicago, and was Chair of its Film/Video Department. Now Professor Emeritus, Rabiger has also been presented with the Preservation and Scholarship Award by the International Documentary Association. He has given workshops in many countries, led a multinational European documentary workshop for CILECT, the international association of film schools. As Visiting Professor at New York University's Tisch School of the Arts, he taught idea development, directing, and advanced production. When he retired 2001 to write full-time, Columbia renamed its documentary center "The Michael Rabiger Center for Documentary.” In 2002 he was made Honorary Professor at the University of Buenos Aires, Argentina; in 2003 awarded the 2003 Preservation and Scholarship Award by the International Documentary Association in Los Angeles; in 2005 the Genius Career Achievement Award by the Chicago International Documentary Festival, and also in 2005 was made Professor Emeritus by Columbia College Chicago. He is the author of the enormously successful, Directing: Film Techniques and Aesthetics (Focal Press), now in its fourth edition, and Directing the Documentary (Focal Press), now in its fifth edition. He is also the author of Developing Story Ideas (Focal Press), currently in its second edition. He is currently writing a biography of Thomas Hardy.Mick Hurbis-Cherrier has been teaching all levels of film and video production at Hunter College in New York City for more than a decade. He works professionally in both film and video and has performed a wide range of duties on films, including producing, writing, directing, cinematography, and editing. I went to a filmmaking camp from 13-17. I went to a film college from 1998-2001. I've worked with many other filmmakers and have directed my own stuff as well.I must say that while there is a great deal in this book that I've already known either through school or real-world experience, even that info is wonderful to read again. Sometimes it's because it's presented from a new perspective, in a new light or in clearer ways. I find myself learning about what I've known all over again, and it's very exciting to me.But having experienced what this book teaches, I can say with conference that the authors know what they are talking about. It's all legit. You can trust what you're reading in this. The book is tantamount to film school minus the ability for you to ask the teacher questions, to get your hands on school equipment and to have someone there pushing to you make films. Still, all the reading material you would get in film school is between these covers.I have to take long breaks between chapters sometimes because the depth of information can be overwhelming. I've been taking notes as I go along because of how much I'm reading. I am only just beginning Chapter 4 which is around page 107 of 504 and we've only covered the script (for good reason!). It excites me to think that there will be this much information regarding the other stages of directing (production, post production).The book is WELL worth you money. Read it, take notes. You will find yourself using these exercises/tips/tricks on every one of your films from this point on.You can buy a book on writing a script.. Or you can buy a book on reading other scripts. Or you can buy a book on pre-production things like storyboarding, call sheets, shot lists etc. Or you can buy a book on basic camera coverage and terminology. Or you can buy a book on editing.......Or you can buy this one single book which covers all of that and more in a fantastic and complete way!
This is the most comprehensive, digestable, and practical book, not just on directing, but on filmmaking as a whole. There is such a generous amount of material covered, from dramatic elements of a story, to interpeting screenplays, to more traditional director fair as composition and production concepts - all of which will craftily lend itself to grooming the next Spielberg. Don't waste time and money on the other books, THIS is the one to start with.
This book is extraordinarily informative, ultra-specific, and updated to reflect all of the latest technological innovations in filmmaking and particularly the bullet-fast changes to digital filmmaking that occur so frequently. This author is a MASTER of his field and subject matter. This book is more of a complete encyclopedia than just a book. And the points throughout of how exactly to write, direct and create creative product that is authentic and comes from genuine experiences and heartfelt place that will resonate with audiences for generations, is priceless. Kudos.
Hands down the BEST book for aspiring film directors. It covers everything you need to know from pre-production to post-production. I haven't let it go since I started pre-production and scripting my first short film. It has been an invaluable help to understand the process and to know what to do! It's like having a mentor in your home - you have a question? The answer is in the book. Plus, the book comes with a companion website where you can download forms and logs etc....I feel very lucky to have stumbled across it while searching on Amazon for books to help me through my first filmmaking project. AND it benefits the short film director and the feature length director as well. AND it also helped me make the script better! I can't say enough about it...there's no better book out there if you are beginning.

Our daughter who is 12 and has a disability loves the buddies so we had to ad the spooky buddies book to her collection.I have to say it is spooky ,sometimes she has nightmares because of the halloween hound in the movie who is a vey large dog with green eyes.Then there is pip the beagle dog who turns into a ghost. Cute book,Cute movie. Make sure you supervise this movie to explain it is just pretend if you have little ones who tend to be spooked and watch it during the day. LOL

FRANCES MAYES is the author of seven books about Tuscany, including the now-classic Under the Tuscan Sun--which was a New York Times bestseller for more than two and a half years and became a Touchstone movie starring Diane Lane. It was followed by Bella Tuscany and two illustrated books, In Tuscany and Bringing Tuscany Home. She is also the author of the novel Swan, six books of poetry, and The Discovery of Poetry. I really wanted to like this book better than I did. It has its elements. It's about three women in their 60's who decide against retirement home living and decide to rent a villa in Tuscan. What a wonderful idea. They are all healthy, talented and have money. They are not dependent on their Social Security checks. They drop $1000 on old books without a blink of an eye, They cart home cases of wine and armloads of flowers. They are not worried about money at all. They fall into unique employment opportunities, take classes especially in Italian, spend time in town drinking cappuccinos and visiting with the locals, meet interesting men and live a wonderful life. It's very reaffirming and wonderful although the excess started getting to me a little (sour grapes perhaps wishing I was living like that). So what bothered me? It ambled and ambled. I finally narrowed down the problem. There is another couple already living there about 10-15 years younger than the women. They are already embedded. The woman is a famous niche writer and poet. She is writing about her former mentor in Tuscany, Margaret, another writer. And it's this tangent story that slows the story down. Margaret is not involved in the story and yet takes up copious amounts of space. This leads to my common complaint of the apparent lack of copy editors working now. A good one would have axed that story line right out and the book would have flowed so much better. Here's the other complaint. Most of the visiting Americans seem to come from the San Francisco area, known locally as the Bay Area. Apparently this is due to the wine connection. So I am happilyreading along when native Californians are referring to San Fran. This would NEVER ever happen. It is almost like a racial slur, fingernails on a chalkboard, an insult. This is such a marked error that it almost destroyed the book in itself for me. Please if you are going to San Francisco never say San Fran. It's just a glaring error This book had such potential and if someone with a red pencil had fixed the ambling it would have been wonderful. I am so ready for books that explore lives after 60.
What an absolutely great read that I enjoyed so very much! I loved getting to know the various characters and how each was developed. I must say, I smiled when I read the review by "ambles" where she mentioned these ladies had no financial worries because not one of them seemed financially challenged in the least. I loved "ambles" review though. I think I enjoyed this book so much because the ladies who moved to Italy are my contemporaries and what they did took "guts" if you will.Thank you Ms Mayes, I will probably read this again.
A perfect read to inspire listening to the voice that whispers of seeking adventure and opening to newness as we mature in life, rather than fading quietly into the background as ‘wise women’ are, many times, encouraged to do. This book will be a perfect gift to give my dearest friends. I found myself inventing excuses to avoid responsibility and keep reading because I didn’t want to come back from Italy.
One of the loveliest books I've ever read! The story had its predictable themes, but the characters were like people I'd want to know - admirable, talented, and perfect as friends. As they discover their true selves as independent women, they thrive and soar in the idyllic setting of rural Tuscany. And the descriptions of food, markets and cooking sent me straight to the kitchen with renewed inspiration. The text was elevated by wonderful snatches of poetry and classical references. It came to a conclusion as it should, but I was really sorry for it to end.
I have enjoyed the previous books by this author, but this was hard to read. It went off on tangents that were not contributory to the story line. Nothing that was written caused me to be drawn into the story that was contained. Please, do not waste time reading this! I kept waiting for it to get better, but it never did
I love Frances Mayes and love her more now that I am a woman “of a certain ageâ€; I think her book is for all women but mostly those who reach a time in their lives where we feel a strong need to possibly reinvent while maintaining the integrity of who we are and have been. I kept putting off the last chapter as I did not want this beautiful story to end. Especially as a true lover of all things Tuscan and Italian, this book sang to me on every page.
Since I enjoyed Under the Tuscan Sun, I had high expectations for this book.It was awful! The author went overboard on tedious, over the top descriptions. Seriously - who needs a half a page to describe a charcuterie platter?The overall tone of the book is pretentious and snobby. I thought about returning it, but the cost of returning a book to Amazon was excessive.I'll donate it to charity!
I have always enjoyed Frances Mayes books and this was no exception, but I think her true métier is writing memoirs and travelogues instead of novels. It also lacked solid editing. For example, there's no build up to wanting to live in Italy. One minute the three women are saying "Meh" to the retirement community and the next thing you know they're on their way to Tuscany. I also noticed that she recycled incidents and descriptions from previous books. A writer of her imagination doesn't need to do that and a good editor wouldn't have allowed it. I am also puzzled by the Margaret storyline versus the Three Southern Women. Each were intriguing in their own way, but as one reviewer pointed out, it was like reading two separate books.There were plenty of "must be nice" aspects - no money problems, no health issues, plenty of attractive, available men, and lots of fun adventures with food, flowers, art, and sight seeing. Aside from the one with the cheating husband and drug addict daughter, the family situations aren't particularly complicated. Still, I enjoyed the escapism, the idea of taking risks, and embracing life's second chances. A good read from Frances Mayes, but not her best.
