This book has been more help than I can ever state. From working with teens to my own family, I have utilized the advice more times than I can mention. Recently at the passing of a close family member, the immediate family sat around the table reading the section on normal symptoms of grief and stated which ways EACH PERSON thought they were grieving. They then understood how to better respond to one another's individual methods of grieving. WONDERFUL book --highest praise!

Really geared more towards clergy than anyone else. I was hoping to find more insight in how I could help others as a friend, daughter, wife, and friend.

This book helped me sort out some of what was reality or panic in the dimness of my darkest hours.
I just finished this book. It's a good read. If you are a Stephen Minister it is well worth reading.
I have a heart for people and selected this book based on this and my education in Social Work. I wasn't prepared for the depth of this book, it is a heavy read and does take some time to work through. While it is done in an easy style it can be hard to digest everything in one reading. I would suggest if you are reading this to minister to others that you read through it once and then as each crisis arises then flip to the section you need. It would be impossible to remember all the great and relevant information by reading it only one time.There are many sections, such as, illness and hospital visitation, crisis, aging, death (within death it includes suicide, SIDS, miscarriage, infertility, violent death, among others), grief, troubled marriages and divorce, addiction (gaming, pornography, chemical addictions, eating, etc), domestic violence, rape, and most important forgiveness. There is also an additional section on resources so that additional books with more information on what is covered in Helping Those Who Hurt can be obtained.I would say this book would be great for someone who has a total heart for helping those in crisis whether on a full time basis or even just for the friend or family member who wants to help out one another. Anyone within a pastoral setting would also benefit from this, I have seen pastors try to help but sometimes fall short or make a situation worse without realizing it and I think this book can be an effective to learn fast how to deal with crises that happen in people's lives.
Helping Those Who Hurt, written by pastoral counselor Barbara Roberts, is a very helpful guide to quality and Biblical care giving. It is a comprehensive guide for caring in a variety of settings from hospital visits to domestic violence. Roberts provides significant practical tips to pastoral caregivers in nine different areas of care giving as well as ways to identify and understand dynamics in each of those nine areas: illness and hospital visitation, crisis, aging, death, grief, trouble marriage and divorce, addiction, domestic violence, and rape.Within each topic is a variety of lists describing issues to be aware of and ways of providing care appropriate to the situation. For example, in the chapter on domestic violence, Roberts offers a very helpful checklist to help pastoral caregivers determine if a couple is engaged in verbal abuse or lacks helpful conflict management skills. Such lists are helpful to pastoral caregivers as they make initial contacts and assessments of the situation and issues involved with a particular person or persons.Of note, is a very helpful and significant concluding chapter on forgiveness as it relates to care giving and spiritual growth. This volume would be a welcome addition to a pastor's library and for both informal and formal care giving training.

Robb goes deeply into the smallest corners of France, logging many hours on his bike as well as many hours in libraries and local sources of information. Overall, a story of the mapping of the country of France, this dense account describes how diverse were the cultures and tribes within France. Until World War I, many French citizens did not speak French! Rather they spoke widely divergent local dialects, only using the language of Paris for official government business (very much as the Chinese use Mandarin as a second language to their own local dialects today). Robb is a professor and scholar of French literature and history, so this volume is thoroughly sourced, annotated, and indexed. Subjects examined include the development of roads and railways, the beliefs and superstitions of the French--including fairies and local spirits interwoven with Catholic saints and miracles, the Tour de France originally a route for medieval "journeymen" as they developed their trades and crafts, the "...toothless, stunted peasants of the 'Chestnut Belt'..." contrasted with the beautiful paintings of peasants by Jules Breton, the treatment of unwanted children put out to die in various ways, the custom of human hibernation in winter, a class of peasant called "cagots" who had no distinguishing features yet were outcasts forced to live apart and subject to cruel discrimination, the huge vacant deserts within the country, peddlers and pilgrims roaming the countryside, river travel and commerce, development of silk and porcelain and tapestry industries, and tourist trade and spas... More like an almanac, 358 pages of remote facts that reveal a portrait of a nation unlike any I have ever read before. An excellent reference for Francophiles.
As someone whose affinity for France lies far south of Paris, I was hoping that this book would give me something that seemed impossible to find anywhere else: A sense of the rest of France. My high hopes, which usually get dashed, were met ten times over. This is a brilliant work that truly captures just how remote and - yes, I'll say it - primitive much of France was right through to the end of World War I. It captures those corners of sociological history that puts the rest of French history into context (such as why during the French Revolution there was such a huge murderous backlash against the clergy ... the answer is that most of the nation still believed in local spirits and not Christian deities).The book is beautifully written, instantly grabbing, and most of the time a real page-turner. It does a brilliant job of identifying the demarcation lines between ancient cultures, subcultures, and sub-subcultures through the fissures of French geography. And it makes one think about one's own cultural history, and the impact of roads and communications in unifying a nation into a single culture, as well as what gets lost along the way in that ruthless homogenization.I can't wait to take this book with me back to the southern parts of France and re-reading it in context. It's just that good.
This book combines history, map-making and exploration, linguistics, and ethnography with a real story-teller's flair. History was never as neat as we tend to think; it's grubby, filled with discomforts, and very strange (and more often than not, hostile) people. Reading this book gives you an armchair tour of centuries of migration and rural life in Gaul without the fleas, mud, or hunger. I couldn't put it down.

I read it almost non stop - now I only want to go to France and spend a few months or so walking leisurely between some of the villages and landscapes noted by the author. Previously I read his book The Discovery of Middle Earth describing the ancient Gaullic road systems-- --- both were clearly written and a pleasure to read while referring to a good map- a sense of wonderment is projected is by the author that I found contagious. - Excellant!
The author cites an 1880 survey that revealed that nearly 80% of the population of France could not communicate fluently in the French. This is not your school book history of the France of Louis XIV, the Revolution, Napoleon, Victor Hugo and Claude Monet - basically, Paris. This is an eye-opening history of the French provinces, which was essentially a foreign country to Parisians. The author takes some senseless swipes at Christianity and the Catholic Church, but that doesn't detract too much from this book overall.

The models are beautiful, but this is less practical as a calendar than one might expect. I know -- you are probably buying it to look at sexy ladies, not to plan your life -- but the calendar portion runs vertically along the left side of each photo, with just a letter (like "W" for Wednesday) and a number (like "7" for the 7th day of the month). No complaints; just be forewarned.
The 2018 Sports Illustrated swimsuit calendar is great! It's has 13 posters included on the inside with a medium size calendar at the bottom! Kate Upton is January's swimsuit model - all the models are beautiful & the pictures are well done!...
I buy one of these as a gift for my brother every year. This line is his favorite. The calendar is larger and doesn't waste a lot of space with the actual calendar part, as that really isn't why he likes the calendar anyway.All images are off scantily clad women, as one might expect. Again, my brother loves it
If you are a fan of Sport Illustrated models then you will certainly enjoy this calendar. I get a new one every year. If the calendar aspect is more important to you then the pretty girl you might want to get a different format, my priorities are pin ups first, calendar second.

The Calendar is wonderfully made and the models are all beautiful as usual. No complaints in regards to that.However, the description is a little bit misleading because it says that there is supposed to be a bonus poster, but mine did not include one. It was probably stolen by someone...
I would rate this higher if i could. All of the calendars i have EVER bought both in australia or the US this is the best. Its HUGE and ironically the cheapest out of every calendar i have ever bought. Even when converting to AUD with postage this was the cheapes. Plus it was a GIANT calendar?? Now that's a bargain!! Also bought the smaller 2018 sports illustrated calendar and this was still unique with different girls and outfits. AMAZING!!!!
Needed a small little calendar and this did the trick, it's small at around 7 inches and has nice pictures. The actual calendar part to write notes on is around 5" x 5" so keep that in mind as you won't be jotting down to many notes in that area.
