About the Author

Tom Cooper is an Austrian aerial warfare analyst and historian. Following a career in worldwide transportation business – during which he established a network of contacts in the Middle East and Africa – he moved into narrow-focus analysis and writing on small, little-known air forces and conflicts (about which he has collected extensive archives). That resulted in specialisation in such Middle Eastern air forces as those of Egypt, Iran, Iraq and Syria - plus various African and Asian air forces. As well as writing and co-writing 25 other books and more than 400 articles, he has co-written an in-depth analysis of major Arab air forces at war with Israel during the period 1955-73 - resulting in the six-volume book series Arab MiGs.Dr David Nicolle is an acknowledged expert on medieval military history, specializing in the Middle East.

The fifth volume of this groundbreaking, somewhat revisionist, series covers late 1970 through the first few days of the October 1973 Arab-Israeli war. (Volume 6 presumably covers the remainder of the war.)As with the preceding four volumes, this book provides the Arab perspective mostly through interviews with former pilots, and most of the available published sources. Because much of this material has never before been published, and is at odds with many sources (which predominantly rely on Israeli information), it frequently contradicts the established line, and challenges many old assumptions. In this volume the authors explicitly take their critics to task more frequently and more explicitly than in past volumes, it seems to me.This volume has some particularly nice aspects, especially the coverage of helicopter assaults and special operations in the 1973 war, which shed light on this poorly-understood aspect of the ground war in Sinai. Some excellent appendices include excerpts of Egyptian pilot's logs and a photo-gallery of Egyptian squadron commanders. Photographs, maps and illustrations are excellent as always. My major criticism of this volume is the editing, which seems poorer than earlier volumes. There are some sloppy typos which a spell-checker program could easily have caught, and the footnotes in Chapter 3 in particular need serious editing, they read like they were written by a verbose non-English speaker.

The ideal reference book for Arab Aircraft and airwar in the Middle-east. This series arguably could be the best ever produced.

These are excellent books by Harpia. I have bought all of their Arab MiGs series (and the Mirage series) and really enjoy all of them. Great easy to read text, with lots of details and excellent photos make these books ones I look at often, even after reading them once. Shop around as the prices can vary some. Buy the series and you'll not be disappointed. You will learn a lot from them!

A pandora box , simply amazing , thanks.

Truly awesome book.

Review

One of the Best Books of the Year: NPR, The Guardian, Boston Globe, Paste, Mental Floss, San Francisco Chronicle"As a perfervid Goreyphile, I was a bit leery of a biography undertaking to spell out the details of his life. Did I really want to have the mystery solved? But Mark Dery drags the pond to revelatory result, contextualizing and analyzing Gorey, plunging into his obsessions, dissecting his sexuality, and even examining the philosophical import of nonsense while somehow managing to leave the central enigma radiantly intact. This is an absolutely riveting book about an utterly sui generis subject."―Alison Bechdel, author of Fun Home"The best biographies are the result of a perfect match between author and subject, and it's relatively rare when the two align perfectly. But that's the case with Born to Be Posthumous--Dery shares Gorey's arch sense of humor, and shows real sympathy for his sui generis outlook and aesthetics. Dery's book is smart, exhaustive, and an absolute joy to read... the biography [Gorey] has long deserved."―NPR"A detailed, devoted, and highly readable biography of the illustrator who--from The Doubtful Guest to The Curious Sofa--defined and embodied a world of camp, gothic hilarity."―Ben Schott, The Guardian"Smart and entertaining... brings us closer than ever to understanding a man devoted to enigmas."―Washington Post"Edward Gorey has been granted the most remarkable biography, one I believe he could have lived with. What was the likelihood that this singular genius could be restored, with such compassion and grace, within his whole context: Balanchine, surrealism, Frank O'Hara, Lady Murasaki, et al? This is a Dery Gorey book."―Jonathan Lethem"Provocative... Dery makes a convincing case that Gorey was the true godfather of Goth, inspiring a generation of pop culture memento mori, from the IMAX-scale nightmares of Tim Burton... to the travails of Lemony Snicket... Dery has set the standard for a comprehensive appraisal of his legacy."―San Francisco Chronicle"An entertaining account of an artist who liked to be coy with anybody who dared to write about him."―New York Times"Gorey has found a superb biographer in Mark Dery... Some enigmas aren't meant to be solved--but they can be usefully illuminated. That's just what Dery does in this excellent book."―Seattle Times"Ravishing...Dery portrays the man behind those odd little books that delighted in showing children in danger, blending Victorian and Surrealistic sensibilities; Gorey was a Harvard man, a balletomane, and ultimately, an enigma."―The Boston Globe

Maybe I should have waited to write this review until I finished, but I felt compelled to do this halfway through the book. The biographer relentlessly pushes the gay issue regarding Gorey's sexuality on almost every page so far. It gets tedious and it's non-stop, to the point where I skip over paragraphs because of this. He even comments on "The Bug Book" saying that the two lead bugs are the same color and most likely the same sex. Really??? Who knows if Gorey was homosexual or asexual. Who cares to this much of a degree? There IS a sexuality called asexuality, but it seems that the author won't except this in Gorey's case. Otherwise, I'm enjoying the parts that don't relentlessly talk about Gorey being a homosexual.

I discovered Edward Gorey while pursuing a graduate degree at Harvard, where Gorey was an undergraduate some decades before. As a matter of fact, a friend found a shoebox of Gorey juvenilia in a closet in an apartment somewhere in the Cambridge ambit. The papers were obviously for real, but who knew how they wound up there? And who remembers what became of them? (I seem to recall an attempt to unload them at the Gotham Book Mart, the late, lamented shop in Manhattan's Diamond District that was Gorey Central.) Years later, I used to catch glimpses of his towering, reedlike silhouette in the lobby of the New York State Theater, as it then was, during intermission at the New York City Ballet, whose performances he frequented perhaps even more religiously than George Balanchine, the company's founding genius.I mention all this to indicate a certain willingness to get down in the weeds where Gorey's art and biography are concerned. Expected great things of this book, and to be fair, the research is exhaustive. Unfortunately, the author never says once what he can say a hundred times (harping on Gorey's Anglophilia, his eccentric dress code, the rings on his fingers, his camp sensibility, his unwillingness to be labeled gay or not guy). And much of the detail is, quite simply, boring. Clichés abound. Of Gorey's many gifts, two that have failed to rub off on his biographer are economy and concentration. A reader must do a lot of panning for precious little gold.

Excellent. The Gorey biography we've been waiting for. Recommended for Edward Gorey fans and those already familiar with his work.

by Mark Dery is a 500 pg. biography of artist/author Edward Gorey who lived from 1925 to 2000. Another Amazon reviewer has suggested that it is hard to write the definitive biography of a self-contained or introverted person (Gorey in this case) who made little or no effort to be popular. I agree.Prior to reading I had read two shorter biographical-in-nature books about GoreyI think that I fit the description of the typical admirer of Edward Gory in that I had never heard of him until 1980. That was when Public TV began a weekly series known as 'Mystery'. That series' episodes featured a short lead-in consisting of a Gorey-drawn, tinted, pen-and-ink cartoon of mysterious Edwardian characters appropriately dressed. That lead-in was offered in conjunction with an introduction featuring actor Vincent Price. Price sometimes described the TV location as 'Gorey Manor.' After Price came Diana Rigg to perform the introductions.Mr. Dery's book makes it plain that Edward Gorey was already fairly well-known in New York City. It was there that he caused himself to be noticed because of his usual garb of a long fur coat and sneakers. I might as well use this paragraph to tell readers that I learned from author Dery that Gorey had an I.Q. of circa 160, and was born and reared in Chicago; and also went with his parents to live in Florida for a time.I won't describe as an exciting book. But it is informative in a quiet way and is somewhat of a scholarly product. I think that the book will attract enough of a readership over time to cause it to be commercially successful. While reading it over the course of several days I noticed that it wasn't a work to cause me to want to get right back to reading it after a pause. But I remained in a mood or state to want to finish it.Edward Gorey found enough of a niche among the reading public to cause him to be able to lead a comfortable life. His typical book (and there are many) is short and thin. It contains the author's expert, unusual manner of pen-and-ink, tightly- drafted illustrations, plus prose (or poetry) that will never be called 'wordy' by anyone. He also illustrated books by other authors and was successful as a designer for stage plays, especially one called "Dracula."Author Dery focuses on the question of Gorey's sexuality. Gorey seemed to many to be gay. Some believe that he was asexual, though (says the author) he had 'crushes' of certain men. To this reader/reviewer it makes little or no difference to the quality of the book what his sexual proclivities, if any, were. Over the years Gorey attracted a substantial readership. His books continue to be sought after. Other authors have been influenced by his artistic style. Gorey's works are especially noticeable due to his unusually dark way of treating characters who are children.I believe that Edward Gorey will continue to be known or admired mostly because of the books and art he has produced, rather than via biographical material written by other authors. He is described in Dery's book on the last page of the work's body (pg. 415) as ". . . the most one-of-a-kind person you'd ever meet." This reviewer agrees.

Gorey profiles, until now, have been either serviceable but sketchy, like extended Wikipedia entries, or merely entertaining, colorful but anecdotal. Now cultural critic Mark Dery has given the world not only our first exhaustively comprehensive Gorey biography, but also a brilliantly insightful analysis of the artist's unique place in the culture. And he does so compellingly. Gorey lives in these pages, coming to life in Dery's conversations with just about everyone the man knew or worked with in his seventy-five years. His art finds new life for us as we see it for the first time in the context of Gorey's world.

First, I would like to thank counselorchick, Kevin Johnson, bankee and any others who have obvious resentments towards AA. It is a program developed in the 1930’s and has been the most effective treatment for their members. It is a fellowship of men and women who have the same desire to stay sober. People who follow the program and commit to it eventually become happy, joyous and free. The program has evolved over time to what it is today. People who are cursed with this disease are NOT able to drink in moderation. I am not saying that I completely believe in the entire philosophy but most of it has merit. I think it is opalling and disgraceful for anyone to blame AA for hurting more people than they’ve helped! Are you f*****g kidding me? There is only one person to blame for the behaviors we exubed. Look in the mirror for the guilty party. The negativity in these posts truly proves how restless, irritable and discontent you are. I’m sure there are other programs that successfully help those with the disease of addiction. AA is not for everyone. It is also never AA’s fault when someone relapses. We are still there at every meeting, trying to help the next sick and suffering person.Your portrayal of the “program” is flawed and inaccurate to say the least. There have been 100’s of thousands of people who are now happy, joyous, free and living a life free of anger, depression, sadness and fear.

Simpley put this book will save your life and inspire you to find a path free of addiction . The first half of the book is how it works in AA the second half is all inspirational stories that truely do inspire you to live a better free of addiction life. Often at first when I first considered I might have an addiction problem I read the stories in the back of the book . I found every story I read was about me in some way . After a few reads I knew it was time to confront my addiction issues . Becuse of this book I am now free of my alcohol addiction and starting to piece my life back together . Any time I feel weak or need a bit fo inspiration I open the book and read for a while .This book is the back bone to AA and 12 step programs it will sve your life if you are honest ans willing . Its said you must hit rock bottom before you can make the journey to recovery but maybe if you read this book you will find a way that you can avoid the horor of the rock bottom experience. Good luck to you may you find the peace and serenity you so deserve in life give this book a shot and you will find a new way of life .

I'm not an alcoholic, but a good friend of mine suggested that I read this to gain a better understanding of "what she's all about." I'm truly glad I did. Not only did it deliver on her claim in spades, but it provided me with one hell of a perspective on everything she and so many others have dealt with, and just how vital a group like Alcoholics Anonymous is. I love reading things that provide me with that level of insight.

I’ve been sober almost six months. Thank god for AA and other such programs.About this book- it explains everything. First half talks about how AA came to be and last half shares inspirational stories of other addicts and alcoholics who have worked the program and now lead sober lifestyles. Very helpful and motivating. For anyone out there struggling with addiction, even if you aren’t ready to seek help, read this book. You at least will know you aren’t alone.

I'm so grateful for this book. My sweet daddy suffered from alcoholism and died unrecovered. Growing up in that, I had a lot of resentment and unresolved pain. This book showed me that my Dad was sick, and it helped me see that even though I do not drink- I was effected by alcoholism. Since I do not have this allergy/disease, I didn't understand it. It makes more sense to me now, and it has helped me on my healing journey. I cannot recommend this enough! I know you get audio chapters on Amazon (I believe it is the 1st Edition). I love the 4th edition. I believe it is worth buying even if you can hear it for free.

Don't get the Kindle version if you need to refer to page numbers. Cryptic "locations" (see pic) will not help if you want to use the "Big Book" for any serious work or study. There are plenty of free or online versions available that are paginated. As far as the actual content goes, who am I to argue with the cornerstone manuscript for a fellowship that has proven to help millions worldwide. IMHO modern medicine will never be able to come close to this free and ubiquitous prescription for dealing with ALL addictions (in MY lifetime at least).

Written many years ago and still relevant for todays alcoholic. I felt the book was telling my story and many times I was struck by the economy and perfection of the prose. i.e. 'a vision for you.' In my opinion this is very much an inspired novel that speaks directly to the alcoholic and offers a proven method of recovery and life seemingly beyond the reach of the active alcoholic....Indispensable information for the suffering alcoholics looking for recovery.

It’s nice to have this book available on Kindle. I use my phone, tablets, Mac and Kindle regularly, so this works well for me. The one thing that I would like to see different about this Kindle edition is to have the pages numbered just as they are for the paper book. The table of contents can help to locate specific information, but generally, I feel that this ebook still falls short. It would be far easier to follow along with other readers and references made about specific passages during meetings and when working with others. This edition doesn’t do this, so I don’t like to use the ebook at meetings. I would love to be able to go to a specific page and have the book handy wherever I go. Other than that, this ebook is still nice to have whenever I want to read it.

The late Edmund Morgan may very well have been the most influential American historian of the 20th century. So much of what he wrote has had a definitive impact on the field of American history that he literally stands above the rest of his peers. Few historians can claim to have changed how we view the founding of America, and Morgan is one of that very select company. In American Slavery, American Freedom Morgan managed to alter the relationship of slavery to America. While he was primarily writing about colonial Virginia, he explored the issue of slavery and illustrated how the colonial Virginians used racism to develop the form of chattel slavery that rose here in the colonies during the 17th century. Often as we teach our history courses our students will invariably answer the question about why people came to the colonies with the statement, "People wanted to be free." Yet, we know from the records that most people who came to Virginia were anything but free. The facts are there and have always been there proving this, yet few speak about it because it conflicts with American heritage. Morgan shattered that illusion in this book. He showed that colonial Virginia was the exact opposite of freedom and that many people in the 17th century were forced to go there. In addition he showed how thousands of people died in Virginia from various causes during the first half of the century. He also investigated the role of class in colonial Virginia and how those in power sought to use the colonial government to retain that power for themselves and similar people. At times this ran contrary to what the English monarchs wanted in their colonies, but the upper class of Virginia managed to overcome obstacles and stay in power. Morgan did this by examining the records of the colony including the laws as they were enacted. He found that many laws were designed to help those with money at the expense of those without. He also found where the laws changed and became race conscious which he interpreted as the sign that the upper class was making a clear distinction between white and black in order to create the classic Us vs. Them division. This division would be the racist wedge used to keep poor whites of the lower class from associating with the blacks of any class and to reinforce the status of slavery on all blacks. This book won the Francis Parkman award and is regarded as an American history classic. One of the great things about Morgan was that his writing was wonderful and academic at the same time. Notes are given to the reader on each page via footnotes and reveal the great depth of research that Morgan used to develop this topic. It is a must read even today for anyone studying the history of Virginia. It is also a wonderful example of what a history book should be in its style and literary quality. Morgan's appendix does make one wonder what would have happened had he developed a quantification theory to go with his topic. The data results would probably have reinforced his conclusion. The appendix is an early use of that type of approach and shows that Morgan's conclusion would have been validated by quantification. All in all this book is a must read for any scholar of Virginia, colonial America, or slavery. Reading it will help the student develop a deeper contextual feeling for how colonial Virginia developed and a greater understanding as to why certain things in this country came about. The theme of racism has been existent in America for centuries and Morgan showed us exactly why that was. This book is a must have in my collection and many others for its high quality of research.

I'd actually read this book before I bought it on Amazon. Although it can be pretty long in getting to itspoint - the title seems in the wrong order - it does eventually get to the long-hidden historical nugget: American slaveryand racism are the result of the greed and inhumanity of fewer than one percent of US. We still live with the consequencesof our flawed founding and will never fulfill our lofty promises unless we finally face those facts.

This is a fantastic, must read book for anyone interested in the origins of American racism. Morgan recounts the cultural, economic and political evolution of the 17th and early 18th century Virginia, and with it, makes comprehensible the reasons why racial slavery emerged as an integral component to the development of the white community's pre-revolutionary ideals of independence and liberty. At the founding of the Jamestown colony in 1607, Virginia offered vast tracts of land available to anyone willing to make the trip and who could survive their first season (or two or three) in the New World. Unlike in England where opportunities for land ownership were constrained, the fact that Virginia land was to be had for the taking made the economic equation simple - more labor = more profits. To provide this labor, England's surplus poor (of which there was an overabundance) were sent to Virginia as indentured servants for a period of four to seven years in order to work off the costs of their relocation. Once their indenture period was over, they were free.....and poor. Over time, as established interests grabbed more and more of the land, opportunities for released bondsmen decrease, essentially creating an ever-growing class of destitute (and thoroughly despised) whites who threatened the social and political stability of the colony. Racial slavery was introduced over time to stem this proliferation of poor whites, who, after having served the term of their indenture, were free to be a "blight" on the community. These planter elites were also constantly at political war with a succession of governors appointed by the crown to manage the affairs of the colony in a manner most beneficial to the king. By enfranchising poor whites and enlisting their support for the colonial assembly, the elites were able to exercise political power over affairs of the colony in a manner most beneficial to the colonists, rich and poor alike. The result of these forces caused a major adjustment in white social strata - the role of detested poor who would only work under the threat of the lash was imposed upon enslaved blacks, and poor whites were elevated to the level of political partners with the elites. This simultaneously endowed all whites with a fierce sense of entitlement over their political rights and the prerogatives of power on the one hand, and contempt for their black slaves on the other. Liberty and equality came to be seen as inalienable birthrights while slavery was the means by which the "shiftless, lazy, indolent" poor could be transformed from burdens on society to positive (albeit brutally coerced) contributors. In other words, Virginia whites came to think of blacks with the same sense of scorn and contempt that English aristocrats held for the poor in England while, at the same time, assuming as a birthright the same sense of political entitlement enjoyed by the elite class in England. It was this, to our modern eyes, bizarre combination of egalitarian and tyrannical ideals that informed and inspired Jefferson, Washington and Madison (among others) as they participated in the formation of what would become the United States. The implication of this history on modern political discourse is obvious. Those who today passionately cite the liberty-loving ethos of the founding fathers while simultaneously exhibiting contempt for the poor are only looking at one side of the equation. For the Virginians, slavery and liberty went hand in hand; without the one there could not have been the other. A full, rich and nuanced understanding of our heritage compels us to recognize the human inclination to despise and exploit the powerless with the same vigor and passion that we celebrate the ennobling power of freedom. On a final note of criticism - while the book does a masterful job of making the origins of colonial racism comprehensible, it does so at the expense of "black experience" narratives. The story addresses issues of slavery only to the extent of discussing laws passed throughout the pre-revolutionary period in order to institutionalize it and the effect these laws had on the attitudes of whites towards blacks. I started the book expecting a far deeper dive in this area, and was disappointed by how little was presented concerning the evolution of slavery throughout the 17th century from a black perspective. After having read the book, I concede that this deeper dive was not strictly necessary in order for the author to prove his thesis, yet it would have been a stronger work had greater efforts in this area been made.

The eye-opening journey this non-fiction book offers is not fun, if you are any kind of human being at all. The historical detail and background information is great. The organization makes it easy to understand the complex and entangled events that were happening then and which molded colonial Virginian society, which in turn we inherited. Highest quality scholarship. Dreadful and stomach-turning subject matter. I wish I read this years ago.

Morgan adds understanding through scholarship. His footnotes are extensive and accurate. He surprises with a correlation between the poor of England and Virginia's negro slaves.

"The phrase 'find your passion' can feel intimidating to most high school and college students. However, this book provides inspiring examples, practical next steps, and an invitation to consider innovative work within a breadth of Christian institutions. Readers will leave motivated and with a greater sense of the variety (and perhaps never-before-considered) roles in God's reclamation project."" --Kimberly Thornbury, Vice President, The King's College
