Review

"Paige Williams is that rare reporter who burrows into a subject until all of its dimensions, all of its darkened corners and secret chambers, are illuminated. With The Dinosaur Artist, she has done more than reveal a gripping true crime story; she has cast light on everything from obsessive fossil hunters to how the earth evolved. This is a tremendous book."―David Grann, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Killers of the Flower Moon"The Dinosaur Artist is a breathtaking feat of writing and reporting: a strange, irresistible, and beautifully written story steeped in natural history, human nature, commerce, crime, science, and politics. It's at once laugh-out-loud funny and deeply sobering. I was blown away by the depth of its characters, its vivid details, and Paige Williams' incredible command of the facts. Bottom line: this is an extraordinary debut by one of the best nonfiction writers we've got."―Rebecca Skloot, #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks"What began for [Williams] as the tale of an unusual court case involving a rogue fossil hunter unspools in this book into a wide-ranging examination of the ways that commercialism, ambition, politics and science collide... As a reader, being given entry by Williams into this underworld, privy to the secret knowledge of a black market, is a thrill.... The strange underground world Prokopi inhabits inevitably brings us in contact with some serious oddballs, each of whom is introduced by Williams with the economy and evocative precision of a haiku.... the book's most memorable character may be Mongolia itself, a rugged physical and political terrain that defies easy generalization."―New York Times"The Dinosaur Artist is a tale that has everything: passion, science, politics, intrigue, and, of course, dinosaurs. Paige Williams is a wonderful storyteller."―Elizabeth Kolbert, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of The Sixth Extinction"The Dinosaur Artist is a triumph. With peerless prose and sharp-eyed reporting, Paige Williams weaves a story that, even as it spans continents and transcends geological epochs, is deeply anchored in the passion and hubris of a rich cast of characters. Captivating, funny, and profound, it is easily one of the strongest works of non-fiction in years."―Ed Yong, staff writer, The Atlantic; New York Times bestselling author of I Contain Multitudes"Vivid storytelling.... A triumphant book."―Publishers Weekly"An astonishing tangle of financial gain, national identity, scientific fervour and, above all, the obsessional need to possess pieces of the past."―Nature"Williams's writing is often concise and evocative.... [The Dinosaur Artist] is gripping and cinematic."―Wall Street Journal"A tale so expansive that Nicolas Cage, Preet Bharara, and a colossal carnivorous dinosaur that lived some 70 million years ago are all entangled in its web. That alone should pique your curiosity, but it barely scratches the surface of the paleontological true crime story that unfolds in The Dinosaur Artist by Paige Williams."―Vice"Williams writes elegantly on the importance of fossils to science."―NPR

A nonfiction book should both educate and amuse the reader. Paige Williams' first book succeeds on both accounts and her research and documentary skills are obvious. Her expertise as a writer is demonstrated by her ability to describe the characters and exotic scenes encountered in following Eric Prokopi's ultimately tragic saga with the exquisite detail which the discerning reader desires. Along the way she manages to add brief primers on paleontology, geology, mineralogy, the economics of fossil collecting, and the history and modern geopolitics of Mongolia. Although I have rated her effort five stars, be forewarned that the inexplicable lack of accompanying photographs of the people she describes, the remote locations, and the fossils themselves will disappoint some readers.

This book accomplishes something that many non-fiction books fail to accomplish, which is to be both very entertaining and very educational. Who knew there was such a massive black market for dinosaur (and other) fossils? Moreover, who knew that the underground fossil market has significant geopolitical ramifications that crisscross the globe and even involve celebrities like Leonardo DiCaprio. The protagonist seems like a normal guy who turned his hobby (hunting fossils) into a business, then got in over his head in a number of ways (financially, dealing with shady characters, marital problems, etc.). And like many crime dramas, he just needed "one more score" to make everything OK again. That may sound like a movie, but it's all true in this case. It's a pretty remarkable story, and well worth the read! Highly recommend!

Although science, paleontology, and obscure policy issues are not my usual interests, I make a passionate exception for this true story told with Indiana Jones-like intensity. What drama! What characters! What metaphors! What wit! What a joyride through nerdy paleontology, international politics, and historical epochs!Loved all the details.Loved the elegant shifting of multiple storylines, characters, geography, and timelines.Loved the sympathy with which characters were portrayed, leaving moral questions up to the reader.I'm too old now to ride roller coasters, but this book will do!

This book deals with dinosaurs in the modern age. It is science and crime. It is a wonderful mix and a thrilling true story. The author is a great talent and I predict great things from her in the future.Get this book and treat yourself to a good read.

Very well written book with great insight into the world of commercial fossil dealing. Not to mention a fascinating story.

This book is very detailed and interesting if one is into archaeology, dino-bones and Mongolian dinosaur treasures. It can get a little too much into detail on occasion, reference the politics of the theft of prehistoric bones from this country, making it a bit dry, but the pace picks back up. Now, I know more than I did before I read it, for sure, especially about this one particular skeleton theft, auction and capture of the thieves.

Well written. An interesting story of fossil hunting and retail of same. A story of how fossil resale can effect ones life.

Enjoyed this book. It was very detailed, so it was interesting and informative, but sometimes a little dry. Learned a lot about the history of fossil study and also Mongolia in general. Has helped me to answer some Jeopardy questions!

One of the occupational hazards of moving from excel based reporting to database administration is the urgent need to acquire technical skills in how to write queries. So, my coworker and resident expert on databases has been preparing a crash course of reading and reference materials on SQL so that I can get a basic hang of the architecture. This book is one of a series I will be looking at, so for those readers who appreciate my more technical book reviews, this is a change of pace from the sort of book I normally read. That said, this book, even given its technical content, certainly was written for a broad audience, and may even be a bit too basic for its intended aims, unless those aims are to get someone’s feet wet with very basic queries and understanding before moving to more challenging material. This book lives up to its name. At about 170 pages of main material, and some appendices that include restricted words and some basic queries that probably need to be read and referenced, this book is not a demanding read. It divides up a basic understanding of SQL, including an explanation of basic syntax and the structure of relational databases, into about fourteen short chapters that follow more or less the material of my basic introduction to SQL courses that I have taken. Included are introductions to adding and dropping tables, inserting information, performing basic inner and outer joins, summary calculations, sorts, and the like. This is practical information, and the book does a good job of explaining these tasks, at least at their simplest level. With a broad intended audience, this book would appear to be pretty basic for most web developers and programmers, except as a very easy introductory book that pushes the reader towards more challenging material. That said, the book is skillfully written, with amusing and informative tips and excellent full-color visuals. Even if it is basic, it at least is a book worth keeping around for reminders, so I can see why my coworker still has it even if he is far beyond the level of an introductory user of SQL. The book even manages to provide some parallel translation of the same query into three different dialects of SQL, which provides some helpful comparison and adds depth to the book. This was certainly a worthwhile read, even if it was a basic one for the most part.
