From the Inside Flap
“Rayor’s book is superb and appeals to all who are interested in classical literature, mythology, and related subjects. It displays the translator’s art at its best and is highly suitable for classroom use. Those wishing to pursue the Hymns in greater depth will find the select bibliography a useful source of current scholarship on the subject. Rayor is to be congratulated for a job well done.â€â€•Classical Outlook "This translation beautifully captures the style of the Homeric Hymns, at once pictorial and flowing. With an art that conceals art, Rayor finds the right euphonious language: accurate, vibrant without calling attention to itself, varied in tone, and natural. It is a delight to read."―Eva Stehle, author of Performance and Gender in Ancient Greece

Gives very good back stories to most of the gods and goddesses. I was required to read some of his for a college mythology class. It explains how a lot of the gods began and why they have their certain powers.
Good as expected.
A beautiful and accessible translation. The notes in the back are an added bonus.
For those unfamiliar with the "Homeric Hymns," translated in this case by Diane Rayor: they are a set of thirty-three or thirty-four short and long poems in honor of the major -- and a few minor -- Greek Gods, in the dactylic hexameter used in the "Iliad" and the "Odyssey," and other early Greek poems. They are attributed to Homer in the surviving manuscripts, and some allusions and quotations in classical writing. This is not taken seriously, but provides a label. Some are clearly early, a few are suspected of being Hellenistic, or even post-Christian. The longer hymns combine invocation, praise, and extended narratives; the shorter hymns lack the narrative, and in few cases are little more than invocations. They also vary considerably in the solemnity with which they approach the gods (see the trickster Hermes as a baby in Hymn 4). The two opening hymns survive in one damaged manuscript, so "To Dionysos" is a set of fragments, and, "To Demeter," has several gaps. The third, "To Apollo," is suspected of being two separate works linked by an ancient editor. The last piece, "To Hosts," is sometimes excluded, as it is a reminder that hospitality is a sacred duty, and not actually a hymn, and is also found in other contexts. All but a few are clearly intended for public performance, either as short introductions (proems), or as major pieces in themselves. As I have commented in reviews of other translations, by Apostolos N. Athanassakis (Johns Hopkins, 1976), Jules Cashford (Penguin Classics, 2003, with Introduction and Notes by Nicholas Richardson) and Martin L. West ("Homeric Hymns, Homeric Apocrypha, Lives of Homer," Loeb Classical Library, 2003, with a newly-edited Greek text), this long-neglected body of texts has received several bursts of attention over the last few decades. After a gap between World War I (Evelyn-West's old Loeb bilingual edition of 1914, last revised 1936; probably still available for awhile) and the 1960s, we now have English renderings by Boer (1970; a second edition [1975?] restored a Hymn to Apollo), Sargent (W.W. Norton, 1973), Athanassakis, Shelmerdine (Focus, 1995), Crudden (Oxford World's Classics, 2002), Cashford, West, and now Diane Rayor (University of California, 2004) -- counting only those currently in print. There are also editions and translations of individual hymns. Although English readers await a modern full critical text edition (the most recent are Italian: West, following the Loeb format, gives only major manuscript variants and those emendations he uses, with minimal, albeit useful, notes), and a full commentary to replace the venerable Allen, Halliday and Sikes (second edition, 1936), this is still a superabundance. "Get just one, or collect the whole set!" comes to mind.A recent review by a professional classicist (Stephen Evans, on-line in the "Bryn Mawr Classical Review" 2004.08.02) points out that the Crudden, Cashford, and Rayor translations all have annotations and / or introductions which survey recent literature on the hymns, but that they tend to favor different approaches, and so display remarkably little overlap in their coverage.Rayor does join Crudden in discussing Near-Eastern parallels to the hymns. Where Crudden cites comparisons of Hymn 3, the great Hymn (or Hymns) to Apollo, to Babylonian and Assyrian compositions about the exploits of the warrior-god Ninurta, though, Rayor is willing to go back to their Sumerian predecessors for the Hymn to Aphrodite. Unfortunately, I am not convinced that the stripping of the love-goddess Inanna (= Ishtar) of her magic vestments as she passes the gates of the Netherworld has much to do with the undressing of the disguised (as a mortal) Aphrodite by the Trojan prince Anchises in Hymn 5 -- particularly since the living body of Inanna is described throughout in terms of the materials of her own cult statue (something even the smitten Anchises would have noticed). The passage comes from "The Descent of Inanna," which Rayor calls a hymn, although it is usually classed as a narrative. These are not mutually exclusive, as both Greek and Mesopotamian examples show, but if it *is* a hymn, it is *not* to Inanna, but to her rival, the Queen of the Netherworld: it ends with the invocation "Holy Ereshkigal, sweet is your praise!" Still, taken as a "type-scene," it is an interesting parallel, particularly since the setting of the Hymn to Aphrodite is explicitly *not* Greece, but "foreign" (Asia Minor); and Greek re-workings even of Greek sources can be rather drastic.Diane Rayor's translations are not only the product of a distinguished classicist; they have been polished over several years of public readings, and with her students, to create a version which actually works in performance -- at least in American English. Most other available translations are worth reading aloud (with perhaps the exception of Boer's visually experimental free verse, and certainly of Evelyn-White's stodgy prose), but Rayor's alone invites it.Here is a sample of three recent versions of The (Delian and Pythian) Hymn(s) to Apollo (Hymn 3), lines 331-339, for comparison. Hera, Queen of the Gods, is furious over the many children fathered on others by her husband Zeus, the successful rebel against their father Kronos and his fellow Titans, and current King of the Gods -- particularly the "motherless" Athena, who emerged from his head.*Cashford*When she had spoken, she went away from the gods,Her heart very angry. Then immediatelyShe prayed, the lady Hera with her cow-eyes,And she struck the earthWith her hand flat against it, saying:`Hear me now, Gaia, and broad Ouranos high above, and you Titan gods who live beneath the eartharound great Tartaros from whom men and gods come.Listen to me now, all of you,And give me a child apart from ZeusAnd one not lesser than him in strength.Rather, may he be as much stronger than Zeus,Who sees all things, as Zeus, for his part,Is stronger than Kronos.'*West*So saying, she went apart from the gods, angry at heart. Then straightway she prayed, did the mild-eyed lady Hera, and struck the earth with the flat of her hand and said, "Hear me now, Earth and broad Heaven above, and you Titan gods who dwell below the earth around great Tartarus, and from whom gods and men descend; all of you now in person, hear me and grant me a son without Zeus' help, in no way falling short of him in strength, but as much superior as wide-sounding Zeus is to Kronos."*Rayor*In great fury, she stormed from the gods.Eyes dark and wide as a cow's, Queen Hera prayedAnd with down-turned palms struck the earth:"Now hear me Earth and wide Heaven above, and Titans, gods beneath the earth, dwelling aroundgreat Tartaros, from whom men and gods derive:all hear me and grant me a child apart from Zeus,in no way weaker in strength than he, a child greaterthan Zeus by as much as Zeus is greater than Kronos."
These dynamic translations will interest both beginners and more advanced readers, whether to read these as poetry and great stories, for their importance in World Literature, or their particular relation to classical antiquity. The hymns are immensely readable in Rayor's smooth and engaging translations, and the length of the hymns, and their appeal to myth, makes them really perfect for classroom use. Readers will be fascinated with their speculations on the origins, powers, and mishaps of the gods and goddesses, and they provide a great take-off point for writing assigments, in my classes. Rayor's notes are clear, to the point, giving just enough detail for readers who want more, and signalling where we can look further. The text throughout is well-informed by recent anthropological approaches that have expanded knowledge of ancient Greek culture, evident in the valuable introduction and notes, which attend to the interrelation of literature, folklore, religion, and geography. Rayor's introduction adopts a practical-minded, functionalist approach to literary problems such as genre and authorship, describing a hymn as a poem of praise, sometimes narrative, addressed to a god, and noting the importance of oral performance in Greek culture. I took personal delight in the maps and glossary, whose easy-to-follow pronounciation guide anticipates and lays aside the uncertainties about proper names that many students find to be the greatest single obstacle to the Hymn and to classics. Casual readers will appreciate the clarity and accuracy of the language, with its fast-paced readability: the English of the hymns neither extrapolates nor subtracts from the original texts, balancing the desire for accuracy with creating a translation that is at once concise and musical. The introduction is clear and the bibliography offers a well-balanced selection of recent criticism. Of particular value are the the notes, which point to additional ancient and contemporary sources, always stressing the poems' contexts in poetic performance and religious worship in the ancient world.

Review
"Paige Williams is that rare reporter who burrows into a subject until all of its dimensions, all of its darkened corners and secret chambers, are illuminated. With The Dinosaur Artist, she has done more than reveal a gripping true crime story; she has cast light on everything from obsessive fossil hunters to how the earth evolved. This is a tremendous book."―David Grann, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Killers of the Flower Moon"The Dinosaur Artist is a breathtaking feat of writing and reporting: a strange, irresistible, and beautifully written story steeped in natural history, human nature, commerce, crime, science, and politics. It's at once laugh-out-loud funny and deeply sobering. I was blown away by the depth of its characters, its vivid details, and Paige Williams' incredible command of the facts. Bottom line: this is an extraordinary debut by one of the best nonfiction writers we've got."―Rebecca Skloot, #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks"What began for [Williams] as the tale of an unusual court case involving a rogue fossil hunter unspools in this book into a wide-ranging examination of the ways that commercialism, ambition, politics and science collide... As a reader, being given entry by Williams into this underworld, privy to the secret knowledge of a black market, is a thrill.... The strange underground world Prokopi inhabits inevitably brings us in contact with some serious oddballs, each of whom is introduced by Williams with the economy and evocative precision of a haiku.... the book's most memorable character may be Mongolia itself, a rugged physical and political terrain that defies easy generalization."―New York Times"The Dinosaur Artist is a tale that has everything: passion, science, politics, intrigue, and, of course, dinosaurs. Paige Williams is a wonderful storyteller."―Elizabeth Kolbert, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of The Sixth Extinction"The Dinosaur Artist is a triumph. With peerless prose and sharp-eyed reporting, Paige Williams weaves a story that, even as it spans continents and transcends geological epochs, is deeply anchored in the passion and hubris of a rich cast of characters. Captivating, funny, and profound, it is easily one of the strongest works of non-fiction in years."―Ed Yong, staff writer, The Atlantic; New York Times bestselling author of I Contain Multitudes"Vivid storytelling.... A triumphant book."―Publishers Weekly"An astonishing tangle of financial gain, national identity, scientific fervour and, above all, the obsessional need to possess pieces of the past."―Nature"Williams's writing is often concise and evocative.... [The Dinosaur Artist] is gripping and cinematic."―Wall Street Journal"A tale so expansive that Nicolas Cage, Preet Bharara, and a colossal carnivorous dinosaur that lived some 70 million years ago are all entangled in its web. That alone should pique your curiosity, but it barely scratches the surface of the paleontological true crime story that unfolds in The Dinosaur Artist by Paige Williams."―Vice"Williams writes elegantly on the importance of fossils to science."―NPR

A nonfiction book should both educate and amuse the reader. Paige Williams' first book succeeds on both accounts and her research and documentary skills are obvious. Her expertise as a writer is demonstrated by her ability to describe the characters and exotic scenes encountered in following Eric Prokopi's ultimately tragic saga with the exquisite detail which the discerning reader desires. Along the way she manages to add brief primers on paleontology, geology, mineralogy, the economics of fossil collecting, and the history and modern geopolitics of Mongolia. Although I have rated her effort five stars, be forewarned that the inexplicable lack of accompanying photographs of the people she describes, the remote locations, and the fossils themselves will disappoint some readers.
This book accomplishes something that many non-fiction books fail to accomplish, which is to be both very entertaining and very educational. Who knew there was such a massive black market for dinosaur (and other) fossils? Moreover, who knew that the underground fossil market has significant geopolitical ramifications that crisscross the globe and even involve celebrities like Leonardo DiCaprio. The protagonist seems like a normal guy who turned his hobby (hunting fossils) into a business, then got in over his head in a number of ways (financially, dealing with shady characters, marital problems, etc.). And like many crime dramas, he just needed "one more score" to make everything OK again. That may sound like a movie, but it's all true in this case. It's a pretty remarkable story, and well worth the read! Highly recommend!
Although science, paleontology, and obscure policy issues are not my usual interests, I make a passionate exception for this true story told with Indiana Jones-like intensity. What drama! What characters! What metaphors! What wit! What a joyride through nerdy paleontology, international politics, and historical epochs!Loved all the details.Loved the elegant shifting of multiple storylines, characters, geography, and timelines.Loved the sympathy with which characters were portrayed, leaving moral questions up to the reader.I'm too old now to ride roller coasters, but this book will do!
This book deals with dinosaurs in the modern age. It is science and crime. It is a wonderful mix and a thrilling true story. The author is a great talent and I predict great things from her in the future.Get this book and treat yourself to a good read.
Very well written book with great insight into the world of commercial fossil dealing. Not to mention a fascinating story.
This book is very detailed and interesting if one is into archaeology, dino-bones and Mongolian dinosaur treasures. It can get a little too much into detail on occasion, reference the politics of the theft of prehistoric bones from this country, making it a bit dry, but the pace picks back up. Now, I know more than I did before I read it, for sure, especially about this one particular skeleton theft, auction and capture of the thieves.
Well written. An interesting story of fossil hunting and retail of same. A story of how fossil resale can effect ones life.
Enjoyed this book. It was very detailed, so it was interesting and informative, but sometimes a little dry. Learned a lot about the history of fossil study and also Mongolia in general. Has helped me to answer some Jeopardy questions!

One of the occupational hazards of moving from excel based reporting to database administration is the urgent need to acquire technical skills in how to write queries. So, my coworker and resident expert on databases has been preparing a crash course of reading and reference materials on SQL so that I can get a basic hang of the architecture. This book is one of a series I will be looking at, so for those readers who appreciate my more technical book reviews, this is a change of pace from the sort of book I normally read. That said, this book, even given its technical content, certainly was written for a broad audience, and may even be a bit too basic for its intended aims, unless those aims are to get someone’s feet wet with very basic queries and understanding before moving to more challenging material. This book lives up to its name. At about 170 pages of main material, and some appendices that include restricted words and some basic queries that probably need to be read and referenced, this book is not a demanding read. It divides up a basic understanding of SQL, including an explanation of basic syntax and the structure of relational databases, into about fourteen short chapters that follow more or less the material of my basic introduction to SQL courses that I have taken. Included are introductions to adding and dropping tables, inserting information, performing basic inner and outer joins, summary calculations, sorts, and the like. This is practical information, and the book does a good job of explaining these tasks, at least at their simplest level. With a broad intended audience, this book would appear to be pretty basic for most web developers and programmers, except as a very easy introductory book that pushes the reader towards more challenging material. That said, the book is skillfully written, with amusing and informative tips and excellent full-color visuals. Even if it is basic, it at least is a book worth keeping around for reminders, so I can see why my coworker still has it even if he is far beyond the level of an introductory user of SQL. The book even manages to provide some parallel translation of the same query into three different dialects of SQL, which provides some helpful comparison and adds depth to the book. This was certainly a worthwhile read, even if it was a basic one for the most part.

This review is for kindle version of the textbook. It's completely unusable. The most important information is organized into tables which are most likely formatted as pics with very low resolution (see pics attached). Doesn't matter which device is used (tried them all - iPhone, iPad, laptop, desktop, Galaxy tab, etc) the tables are too blurry to read. This is the most disappointing ebook I've ever bought.
For me, I rented this book. However now i am realizing I should probably buy this book. This book will not only be used during the first semester of nursing school, but it will be used throughout your whole nursing school career. This would also be good to keep after nursing school because you will be able to refer to this book if you forget something, have questions, or just need a little refresher. This book is easy to use, super informational, and up to date on most of the information. It is easy to understand all the information in the book; they really lay it out step by step.I use this book daily for almost every single class that I have. This is undoubtedly the book that I look at the most during my nursing school. I have no doubt that I will end up buying this book to keep forever. I would suggest that not only nurses, but any person that is going into the health care field to buy or rent. I can promise this book will increase your knowledge, ability, and confidence on how to do a physical examination and a health assessment. If you can't afford to buy this book, renting is a great option that will allow you to have access to the invaluable information. So glad that I got this book and I hope you guys get this book too.
Although the material in the book is the same, the quality is definitely not the same as the book my Assessment cohorts have. They ordered their book from Elsevier and I ordered my here, obviously. Most of the images are clear but some items are very blurry like tables and most prehighlighted things. If you look at the picture you can compare the quality of my book to one from the original company. If you look really close at the picture of what’s used to bind the book you will notice it looks like a zipper instead of the normal item. If you look also you can clearly see that one page is labeled Chapter 16 Nose, Mouth, and Throat when it is clearly the chapter on Breasts. Had I noticed all of these things when my book came in mid-August, I would have returned it, but at this point I have highlighted all of the important things I need to know as a future nurse. I would love it if the company would do the right thing and refund my money for selling me a knock when I was expecting a used original.
I am in a FNP program and this was a textbook required and provided in an online format. I found it to be helpful and well organized so I ordered it to have a hard copy. Loving the ease I can reference back to things and highlight uber important things. Step by step instructions make for great learning! Very well done.
Book in great condition. I did not realize that it did not include access code. I am not very happy about this. I wish it clearly stated this. Why would I buy a brand new book without all the perks.
This book does not display the tables or images properly! I had to buy ANOTHER copy just so I could read the diagrams and everything :( Very dissappointed. Also Kindle does not have page numbers so its' hard to find the pages to do assignments. Its as if they scanned the images and tables but the resolution SUCKS.The photo uploaded is a table. I zoomed in on my ipad mini, and I took it with my phone. You should be able to see that the words are fuzzy. It just is not worth the bother. I passed my class, but I had to borrow and buy copies from my classmates.
This textbook was a requirement for my nursing course. I love this book because each chapter focuses on one specific body system (e.g., neurological, muscular, reproductive, etc.) in a very precise and concise manner--which is usually in the form of a chart and/or a table. Normal and abnormal assessment findings are elaborated for better understanding. I will definitely use this book through out my entire nursing career.I only wish there was an electronic edition of this seventh edition!
I am a bit disappointed that I ordered this book new & what I received did not appear new at all. I paid good money to receive a new book & that's what I was expecting. The cover of the book has multiple dents, as if it's been thrown around & the book did not come shrink wrapped. Like all NEW books should. Additionally, it did not come with any access codes. Other than that, the book did come on time.

Review
"While mom and dad might love the closeness of story time, they surely don't love the ripped pages that come from reading to a curious infant. These tear-, bite-, and spit-proof books have the slimness of a paperback and the durability of a board book." –RealSimple

Good quality, as are all of the Indestructibles books. Safe for toddlers. Introduces little ones to different occupations in a typical neighborhood, such as a postman and a garbage collector. My grandchildren enjoyed it.
I have a handful of these books. They are perfect for the car and diaper bag cause they can’t get distroyed. I can easily throw one in the back seat when the kids get cranky haha
Great baby shower or 1st birthday gift. These things are a big hit with the babies.
My baby loves this story. She likes to point at all the artwork. Considering she likes to eat paper at the moment this is a good solution.

Like many Terry Pratchett fans, I have already read every Discworld book, many several times. With the hole that has been left by the passing of Sir Terry we will all keep desperately looking for a way to get MORE. Stephen Briggs' performance of many of the Discworld books is definitely one of those places to look to fill the Pratchett gap. I have purchased several of the audiobooks and I have to say, this one is probably the best. In fact, when I finished listening to it, I just went back to the beginning. Listening to Audiobooks of novels that you have already read in a world that you have thoroughly imagined is such a double edged sword: what you interpreted in your mind may be really challenged by the performer. I have to say, Stephen Briggs interpretations are now ingrained in me. With the subtlest shift of voice he gives complete distinction to each character and after a very short while, these voices have become the way I hear the characters. You can read all of the reviews of "Thud" itself for story and such, I just wanted to note for those searching for a way to get a bit more Terry Pratchett now that the tap is turned off, that this is a great way to experience it as if it were new.
I always find it hard to decide whether these ratings are correct. Is there some violence? Yes--some street fighting, a murder, some dead bodies found. Not too much description. Threats of violence that are scarier to this reader than the actual violence (Sam Vimes fears for his wife's and his baby's lives). Is there sexual content? Yes. Some lesbian innuendo that might go right over most readers' heads; references to pole dancing; a character described with every euphemism possible that relates to a woman with--er--great...tracts of land, shall we say. So it's probably not appropriate for reading to young kids (age 5-9) unless you want to answer some embarrassing questions. What I love about this book in particular is the analysis of the political situation in Ankh Morpork. So like what we were going through the first time I read it, back in the early 2000s. It is as appropriate now as it was then. And I absolutely love the part where Sam is running through the cave, aware that he's missing his 6pm reading time with young Sam, shouting out the words to the book he's memorized. Overall, I think this is one of the best Disc World books. But to each their own.
I'm not kidding, I keep returning to the late Sir Terry Pratchett and have rarely been disappointed! And I admit to having kind of a crush on now-Duke Samuel Vimes of Ankh-Morpok. He is just disrespectful enough to keep himself and others honest, and he is honest enough to know that he recognizes criminals because he has some of their own tendencies resonating in his own slightly tarnished soul. The great question of who started it, the Dwarves or the Trolls is finally settled here, and, as is so often the case, the truth shall make ye fret, to steal from another Pratchett book that I also loved, "The Truth," and fret not, Pratchett-lovers, it is all brought to a conclusion as only Sir Terry can. I'm going to miss his writing terribly, and this book is one of the many reasons why. Detritus gets a surrogate son, Vimes' own son is introduced in a very touching way that shows that Vimes' heart is battered yet healing because of the work and more importantly, because of his good wife, and Vimes gets an ally -- actually, several allies -- that one can only hope will be seen again. The original name of the game of chess' final move, "checkmate," was "shaykh ma'at" or, in English, "the governor is dead," He isn't yet, but it is a very near thing, and Pratchett brings it to a wonderful close.
Thud is the 34th discworld novel written by Terry Pratchett. This book returns to Ankh Morpork and the to the cast of characters in the A.M. City Watch. Pratchett has been trying to move the technology of the discworld on. We've had the clacks, the Times, the postal service and in this book a whole bunch of engineering, some riots, some assassins and some murders. There's also a million year-old demonic life force to contend with. Stuck in all of this is 'Mister Vimes'. Vimes has clearly become one of Pratchett's favourite characters. And why not, there's a lot you can do with Sam Vimes. This is a darker novel compared to most of the discworld oeuvre. It's not quite as serious as Nightwatch but it explores darker themes and the sense of humour is less ebullient. Nevertheless this is one of the best discworld novels due to its complexity and interweaving of various comic and tragi-comic themes. Let's just say that Tawnee is a classic Pratchett creation and a romantic Nobby Nobbs is truly frightening. Go on read "Thud!". You know it mages twisted sense.

Oracle Coherence 3.5 provides an excellent introduction to the features of Coherence, including some advanced features such as backing map listeners. More importantly, the features are always put into context. The book explains what problems the features solve and how they fit into real world use cases. The motivations for using features make it far easier to know when to apply them. Chapter 8: Implementing the Persistence Layer is especially good at explaining step by step how to use Coherence to solve particular problems.I like that the book always shows code examples. For a developer, a snippet of code is worth a thousand words of explanation. The book also provides some utility code that will be useful in many applications plus a link to more free utilities. The tone of the book is very approachable. You feel like Aleks Seovic sat down to explain Coherence to you; it's not like reading a textbook.I wouldn't even try to use Coherence for C++ without first reading "Chapter 11: Accessing Coherence from C++".My only quibbles are that some of the code formatting seems a bit odd and there are some minor wording errors.Overall, this is an excellent book that is always pragmatic. It will help developers solve real problems in the real world using Coherence.
1. somehow I had tough time finding details on how it integrates with Weblogic server2. There should be a 2nd version of this book with latest features that are available. it just barely touched the new details of 3.5 .Would be nice if the 2nd edition of this is available
Oracle Coherence 3.5 is a great book to learn Oracle Coherence. What are missing, as someone else already mentioned, are JPA, Hibernate, and transaction. I will give 5 stars if it has three chapters to cover these three topics how they work with Coherence.
Most all examples are from a provided cluster based set of 3 applications running and communicating all together on different platforms: Java, C#, and C++. The book has one of the best defined persistent/domain layer description, so better than what you get in Java Persistence with Hibernate. So the book is not just listing APIs but how to use them together with an explicit attempt to provide quality code. The author seems experimented on finding workaround for design/APIs issue of Coherence, so he provided many packaged extra classes to help simplify usages. What is missing in the book is coverage about transaction based application, like J2EE application using JTA/Hibernate, and how locking and rollback fit with lifecycle of cache modifications. In other words, there is no discussion how Coherence integrates and helps when it is used as the second level cache for Hibernate. It's a must read for all Coherence users. It's a useful read for anybody involved with local cache or in cluster.
I might be a little biased, since I work on Coherence at Oracle, and I helped to proof-read the book. Nonetheless, there's no doubt that this book has been extremely helpful for new customers picking up Oracle Coherence and needing to dive into the technical details quickly. More importantly, this book isn't just about the product -- it's about how to design and build complex distributed systems. In other words, this book is a great way to learn _how_ to build the types of systems (like banking systems, exchanges, real-time risk analytics, telco infrastructure, eCommerce web sites, etc.) that use Coherence, even if you aren't currently using Coherence.Great book -- thanks Aleks!
The internet has ushered massive data flow for businesses in any industry. A single online connection will allow any user access to millions of websites that provide information on a specific data. For businesses, maintaining this massive data is critical for their businesses. They have to handle data in a large-scale scenario or else they will never be able to provide the services expected online. This is the reason why local-server is no longer the best solution for a growing business. The "cloud" has become the byword for many businesses simply because it provides unlimited expansion to a business also experiencing the same expansion. But the challenge of an ever-expanding data is on maintaining it to be easily accessible online. This is where Oracle Coherence tries to provide an answer. In gist, it is a data management system from Oracle that eases loading of database without compromising user's experience on working with the data online. Oracle Coherence can be used with different servers located around the world so that data transmission to different users will be stable. The tool provides a fully scalable solution for businesses and industries that deals with massive data. The authors of the book are not just banking on their experience with programming languages in order to write a book. The main author, Aleksandar Seovic, is one of the leading developers of .Net for Oracle Coherence. His expertise is based not just on the IT industry but specifically in Oracle Coherence. The co-authors, Mark Falco and Patrick Peralta are also working with Oracle and have been part of Coherence for many years. Mark Falco has been with Coherence since 2005 and Patrick Peralta has vast experience in real world application of Coherence in various industries worldwide.Oracle Coherence 3.5 is a highly recommended book for those who want to start using the system from Oracle. The detailed instructions along with codes and screenshots improve understanding especially on the final chapters of the book. Because of these samples and suggested solutions, the book can also be used as a reference guide for advanced users.
Concepts clearly explained in this book. Authors gave an excellent explanation on the background and foundation on what problem an in-memory data grid trying to solve. The layout of the book is very well organized starting from basics and building on as one progresses through the book. I love studying it.
