This book does not have enough focus on 1 or 2 areas of Farm Antiques to provide adequate illustrations. This is probably a better tool for someone with more familiarity with farm antiques than I do. I got lucky in that the primary piece I was searching for was among the illustrations. There are descriptions of many types of farm antiques for field, barn and house. Never having lived on a farm, most of it went right out of my mind because I had no frame of reference to go with the brief description. If it had more illustrations it would have been better.
Very good coverage of a huge number of artifacts. Good easily have a volume two.

PreS-Gr 1-With this new creation, Klassen repeats the theme from I Want My Hat Back (Candlewick, 2011), but with a twist. The narrator here is the thief-a small, self-confident fish who has pilfered a little blue bowler from a big sleeping fish. He wastes no time or words in confessing his crime as he swims across the page announcing, "This hat is not mine. I just stole it." He continues his narrative with no regrets, but with a bit of rationalizing ("It was too small for him anyway.") as he swims to his hiding place, unaware that the big fish is in quiet pursuit. Readers, of course, are in on this little secret. When the two disappear into a spread filled with seaweed, the narration goes silent, and youngsters can easily surmise what happens as the big fish reemerges with the tiny blue bowler atop his head. Simplicity is key in both text and illustrations. The black underwater provides the perfect background for the mostly gray-toned fish and seaweed while the monochromatic palette strips the artwork down to essential, yet exquisite design. Movement is indicated with a trail of small white bubbles. Klassen's art is just fabulous and his view of life seems quite quirky! My 7-year-old daughter and I love him! For some reason, this is the last of the hat trilogy for us to read. Klassen's comic timing with his illustrations is superb. He makes subtle changes to the illustrations that actually create a dramatic and humorous impact. We laughed out loud reading this. For example, Klassen shows us a large fish that fills 2 pages in profile with his eye closed. The little fish has just stolen the big fish's hat while he sleeps but we only see the big fish. On the next 2 pages, the little fish is thinking that "he probably won't wake up for a long time" and at that time we are looking at the same picture of the big fish but with his eye open. The next page the little fish thinks that "even if he does wake up, he probably won't notice that it's gone" and without changing anything in the picture except the big fish's eye we know he notices. The big fish's pupil is pointed up toward his head! Then on the next page, the little fish thinks that "even it he does notice that it's gone, he probably won't know it was me who took it." This time Klassen uses the exact same 2-page big fish picture but the fish knowingly narrows his eye. Klassen is just genius to convey so much with so little! We do not see the little fish until 13 pages into the story although the book is entirely from his perspective.My daughter and I hotly debated the end. We know the big fish emerges from the dense plants with his hat back and we no longer hear from the little fish. I am firmly in the little-fish-got-eaten camp but my daughter believes he is hiding in shame. Such fun regardless!
This is a picture book, so I thought it might be of interest for a toddler. I didn't read it by myself at first, so I was already a bit taken aback when I read the opening "I stole the big fish's hat." I understand the reviewers who say that the book is humorous and that the humor is dark. I just don't understand who the target reader is. I enjoy dark humor, but I'm not about to go watch Louis CK with my kid... I don't know. I returned it because I don't see the purpose of introducing and explaining the concept of theft to my young child. I start finding many of these newly awarded books a bit too out there for the actual children. It's as if the writers are trying to appeal to the adults who buy and read these books to their kids.
My first grade students loved this book! They were really amused how the little fish made little assumptions like, "And he probably won't wake up for a long time" and the picture would show otherwise (the big fish was actually awake!) This book served as a great mentor text for teaching the strategy of asking questions. Using turn & talk, the students asked questions before, during, and after reading. I kept adding them to our "Good Readers Ask Questions" chart. The book is not that long, but make sure you give the children enough time to look closely at the pictures to see how they contradict the main character's thoughts. The students came up with lots of questions that were left unanswered after reading which led to a very lively and engaging discussion! I highly recommend this book for early primary.
I understand why some people think this story is a little dark for small children. The ending certainly implies that the small fish met an unfortunate end. I chose to fill in my own words where the fish are in the plants. "The big fish found the little fish and told him it's not ok to take things that don't belong to you. The little fish said sorry and gave the hat back." Simple as that! Also, my 2 year olds don't really understand death at this point, so they can't assume that's what happened to the little fish. I wonder if it's mostly pessimistic adults thinking the worst of what's going down in the place where the plants grow close together. The illustrations are dark, but very well done. My kids liked this book, so that's all that matters to me!
This Is Not My Hat is a companion piece to Jon Klassen's earlier I Want My Hat Back, only it takes place underwater instead of in a forest; and the story is told from the point of view of the thief and not the, er, victim. The end result, however, is pretty much the same. If you don't like I Want My Hat Back because of the conclusion, you will not like This Is Not My Hat, either. It helps to have a sense of humor. It helps even more if your humor has dark tendencies.The artwork for This is Not My Hat is every bit as wickedly delightful as the earlier book's, with a bit more of a build-up in the tension and a seek-and-find on one of the two-page spreads.
Me and my husband are always looking for kids books that might not be seen on the traditional family bookshelf. This book is THAT book! We originally read it in a bookstore with our son and couldn't stop laughing. Such a unique book where the words narrate a story but the illustrations say something else completely. Yes the end may not be rainbows and butterflies but neither is real life. We felt like it had a good moral for our son that for every action comes a consequence. We can't wait to share it with our daughter when she gets a bit older. Adults and new parents may appreciate it more than young kids but eventually they'll get the humor.
This book is really cute and funny. I have a degree in education, and while getting that degree I worked in the schools child book library and I found that it is great for children young and old. The art is really cool, classic and simple, but also really funny! The story is funny for adults to read to kids but the words are simple enough to read that new readers should be able to read it themselves. We originally got it from the library to read (purely based on the cover and title lol) and after reading it one time we decided to buy a copy for our kids collection. Would be great in a board book too if they would make one.

In a very insightful book, Topol, builds on the key themes from his previous works - In "Creative Destruction..", he had highlighted the digitizing of all information pertaining to our health and in "Patient Will See..", he had provided a roadmap for new service models that are truly patient-centric. Here, he extends those themes even further and posits that AI, correctly applied, will be transformative to healthcare delivery.That is not necessarily a novel prediction. Numerous authors have highlighted the increasing role of machine-learning/AI in healthcare (and more than a few tech companies have hyped it). Topol acknowledges all that enthusiasm, and using a short set of examples hihglight the value of AI in the first chapter itself. The rest of the book is a systematic expansion of where Topol sees the biggest opportunities in AI are - to the extent he calls it the next industrial revolution.Topol does an excellent job in differentiating clinicians as those that work with and without patterns - these two chapters highlighting the complexities and skill set required to master a cognitive, integrative process is perhaps the most interesting part of the book. These highlight the key assumptions AI developers should (and shouldn't) make while designing their systems. The discussions on how health systems are approaching AI and ML is interesting, but a reader familiar with the academic literature may brush it off as old news; however, Topol manages to convey the key insights and implications that can be extrapolated to other applications. He also provides an interesting take on the role of AI in nutrition and mental health and then becomes very generous with imagination in his discussion on virtual medical assistant.Imaginative, informative, and inspiring - but Topol, almost always ignores the question of "who will pay for it" that has dogged the field of mHealth etc for a while. A reader would have benefited from his expanded views on this issue as well. Overall, an excellent read for anyone remotely interested in healthcare or technology and a wonderful thought-starter for any start-up.

A great book. Putting aside the more controversial aspects of this book, I the Judeo-Christian history was the best part. I thought the review in the NY Times summed it up well.
In fairness, I’m a Christian, so it’s unlikely that I’d love this book. I was interested in seeing if he had any insight into Jesus the historical person (archaeology, etc). As the book turned toward a theme of discrediting Jesus as the Son of God, I wasn’t particularly pleased. However, there are probably a lot of non-Christians who have a point of view similar to the author’s, so it would prove instructive to continue reading.My main issue is that I just didn’t find his arguments convincing. How to explain the radical change in behavior of the apostles from chickens to courageous preachers of the gospel? How to explain the conversion of Saul of Tarsus into Paul, a committed devotee of Jesus? How to explain why none of these people recanted under threat of death and torture. Surely the stories of a apostle recanting would have been maintained somewhere?! Without undercutting the motivations of these people to believe in a risen Jesus reinterpreting the other events that occurred feels incomplete and unconvincing.
Reza Aslan book is a readable defense of the Schweitzerian theory of Jesus (so called because it was popularized by Albert Schweitzer in his "Quest for the Historical Jesus"). Seeing ancient Palestine as a hot bed of revolutionary activity, he finds the most plausible explanation of the historical Jesus as one which sees Jesus as revolutionary who was ultimately crucified for his anti-roman views. The position is fairly common in Biblical Studies and a form of this argument is held by people like Bart Ehrman, N.T. Wright, John Meier, E.P. Sanders and many others. Aslan's version of it plays up the political aspect of it more than some others, but all agree that Jesus is best understood as an apocalyptic prophet. Aslan makes the argument in fairly traditional ways, beginning with the idea that crucifixion is a Roman punishment for treason and building the argument on the twin pillars of Jesus as a original follower of John the Baptist (who is also understood as an apocalyptic preacher) and the cleansing of the temple (understood as a prophetic act signifying the coming apocalypse). These two events are considered firmly historically established and when connected with the crucifixion draws a picture of Jesus as an apocalyptic prophet. I would again note that there is actually nothing particularly new is what Aslan does here. His emphasis on the political ramifications of apocalypticism is a important gloss, but the crux of the argument is found in many other scholars' work. Additionally, there is nothing particularly "Muslim" about Aslan's reading, even if he is himself a muslim. Many Christian and non-Christian scholars read the texts the same way.The real problem with Aslan's work (and this holds true I believe for other scholars who are in the Schweitzerian tradition), is a lack of clear method. Aslan challenges this or that saying or text as being late creations and thus not relevant to the historical Jesus, but methodologically he is all over the map. Occasionally he uses multiple attestation to support the authenticity of passage, but he is certainly willing to use a singly attested passage if it suits his image of Jesus. Occasionally likewise he will use dissimilarity, but this method he also will abandon as necessary. Essentially, the problem in dealing with the sayings tradition is that you can't know the answer before you work with it. But those in the Schweitzerian tradition have discovered the answer through those three "Certain facts" and then they evaluate the sayings tradition in light of that. This makes for a haphazard and problematic method which cannot be replicated. But of course, by not starting with the sayings tradition first and applying a method to it (as say Dominic Crossan does) you ultimately sort the sayings tradition subjectively based on what fits your image and what does not. This is what Aslan ends up with, but again he is not alone among Biblical Scholars in this regard.The reader might ask if I have such strong criticisms of Aslan, why I rated it so highly. The answer lies in its readability and its presentation of the history starting around 300 years before Christ. I used this book in my "Life and Teachings of Jesus" class at a public university, and students were impressed with Aslan's accessibility and information. While I think in the end the book has methodological issues which is rampant among all scholars in the Schweitzerian tradition, much of its history is informative and engaging. Additionally, I think the emphasis on the political ramifications of Jesus is something that is important to consider and often gets lost in those with a more "cynic-like" Jesus. For those reasons I think this book should be read though I would suggest it be read in dialog with John Dominic Crossan's "Jesus: A Revolutionary Biography" for a different and more methodologically sound approach to the Historical Jesus.
I've read the book (unlike so many of the "reviewers" who gave it one star) and here are some points.1) This is a popularization of recent (late 20th-early 21st century) reputable scholarship regarding Jesus. There's nothing in this book that would surprise a person (like myself) who has read pretty much all of the accessible scholarship on Jesus published in the last 30 or so years. Just going through the (extensive!) notes and bibliography at the end indicates to me that Aslan has done his homework.2) Aslan takes the position that Jesus was a zealot for God and God's Temple, but (and this is repeated several times in the book) he was not a member of the Zealot Party, which wouldn't arise until over 30 years after Jesus' death. In this, Jesus was just one of a number of people who arose in the period from the reign of Herod the Great to the destruction of Jerusalem in 70 CE and his fate was like those others. In short, Jesus was killed for his zealotry, which was perceived as a threat to the Roman authorities and particularly to the Jewish sycophants who ran the Temple (and profited nicely from it). This is not a position shared by many members of the religious scholarship fraternity, who have attempted to carve out a position for Jesus where he's a religious figure who did not delve at all into politics. It's an interesting argument that I can't do justice in a few short sentences. If you're interested, you'll have to read the book yourself and decide if Aslan makes his case.3) Aslan doesn't stop with the death of Jesus, and, as someone writing history, not hagiography, he carefully notes that he can't pass judgment on whether Jesus' resurrection occurred, because it is not a historical event but an event of faith. He then pushes on to a discussion of the earliest Christians and, in particular, the conflict between James the Just, described as the brother of Jesus and the head of the Jerusalem Christians, and Paul of Tarsus, the evangelizer of the Gentile world. This part is definitely worth the read, because it brings out the fact that the early Christians were not "in one accord" but were in fact fractiously divided over what Jesus taught and what it all meant.4) My only serious factual gripe about the book comes from the first paragraph of Chapter 15, where Aslan describes James the Just as follows: "He himself owned nothing, not even the clothes he wore--simple garments made of linen, not wool." The problem is that historically linen was an elite fabric, not the fabric of the poor. (For example, Luke 16:19 points out that the rich man in Jesus' parable of the rich man and Lazarus wore purple and fine linen and all four gospels are agreed that Jesus was buried in linen.) Making linen from flax took a lot of preparation as compared to wool, which can be spun practically straight from the sheep. But getting back to James the Just: The sources, by putting James in linen, were more likely comparing James to the Temple High Priest, who would have worn linen for the sacrifices.5) I'm knocking off one star for not being footnoted. Granted, there is an extensive set of chapter-based endnotes (and I strongly suggest reading them, they're as engaging as the book itself), but the lack of footnotes is a serious flaw. Even if the book is intended for a popular audience, it should have been footnoted.6) As for the assertion that the book is fatally flawed because it's influenced by Aslan's Muslim background: That is flatly false. Let me state again that there is nothing in this book that can't be read in the scholarship done by *Christians* published over the past several decades. Moreover, if Aslan was pushing Islam, you'd think that he'd make a point of saying, "Well, Islam considers Jesus a prophet," but he doesn't. Not at all. The reviews which make the assertion that the book is terrible, horrible and awful because of "OOOOH EVIL ISLAM!!!!" appear to have been influenced by Fox News' promotion of a screed by John Dickerson. As a former journalist for Phoenix New Times, Dickerson should know better, but perhaps that's why Dickerson is no longer a journalist but now pastors a church in Prescott, AZ and churning out inaccurate and inflammatory junk for the fearful faithful.
