Great addition to the WOD vampire lore. Some of the pages might be hard to read as it seems like it was just carbon copied into it. I suppose they were going for the ancient scroll look to it. Has that archival feel to it.Some genuinely creepy and ominous entries. Artwork is not that great as it looks like a Goth kid was hired to scribble this one, not sure if that was intentional. The stories and lore makeup for any shortcomings though.Decent read.

You will understand the vampire clans and what their traits are and the reader is bound to have a favorite one out of the bunch.

This book has some great photography; however, it was advertised as being something that it wasn't...enough on that subject. So, it will make a nice Christmas present...for someone else...
I was chagrined to find not one photo of any African American models in this book. I know Bruce did photograph Black men. (I have a number of his vintage photos of men of color.) In another book of Bruce's photos, American Photography of the Male Nude Vol I, there are a number of Black men included. I believe this book is still available on Amazon.
This book is beautifully printed and very well put together. The photography is sexy and sensual, it is the kind of book that you want to leave out on the coffee table for guests to see and enjoy. A definite must have for anyone who enjoys collecting male art photography books, as this one is a true collectors piece. The DVD is also campy and fun to watch with friends around. I highly recommend this book.
I was very excited to recieve this, I collect books on male nude photography and have several others on Bruce Bellas work, this in my opinion is not the best of his work, only a few of the shots are frontal nudes, and none are the "racy" shots he became famous for. So to me this was just your average beefcake collection of vintage nudes and at a this high a price I expected more. The reproduction of the shots is excellent I have to say, but as I prefer frontal nudes this was disappointing.
This book is HOT! Finally a book that does Bruce Bellas justice. Not only are the photo reproductions incredible, but the dvd is beyond sexy. I thought he photographed only in B&W and was shocked to find this book in color. Amazing. This man was a real artist... what a great eye. Some of the hottest men I have ever seen. Left me happy & horny.
I have enjoyed this photo book. Brings back some very good memories. Quality photos of some very hot men.

As will surprise nobody who is paying any attention, I am preparing for war. Why hide it? Although only a moron or someone with a distorted moral sense would actually wish for war, what we wish has little to do with it. Intermittent war is the natural state of man, whatever Steven Pinker may say, and as Trotsky said, more or less, “You may not be interested in war, but war is interested in you.†What follows today’s Age of Stupid will, we can be certain, not be endless tides of more stupidity, because that is impossible. And to get from here to there, whatever “there†is, will most likely requiring passing through what the Chinese call “interesting times,†in which hot, flying metal will play a prominent part.“War,†perhaps, is not the correct noun. Individuals, or small groups of civilians, don’t fight wars proper, except as part of some larger organization, and I am not talking about the organized military here (although its presence in any future interesting times is highly relevant), or even a true militia in the Colonial sense. “Armed action by non-soldiers†is probably closer to what I am talking about. Such armed action could take many forms. At its narrowest, it is home defense against burglars or similar marauders. It could be response to localized social unrest, as in the neighborhood defenses organized after recent natural disasters. It could be dealing with a broader societal breakdown, as shown in any number of dystopian novels and films. And it potentially includes rebellion, as well as civil war, in the lighting of its fuse or in its prosecution.I like to pose a riddle to my children. Question: Why is a man never lacking weapons? Answer: Because a man without weapons is not a man. This is because the role of a man, at its core, is to protect and defend, and without weapons, a man cannot adequately perform his role of defense (and offense when that constitutes defense). For that matter, women should have weapons, too—not for military use, since women should not, in ordinary circumstances, serve in the military as soldiers, in combat or not, but to enable them to fight as last-ditch family defense. Thus the family, and larger forms of community (of which families are the building blocks), cannot fulfil its function without contemplating a possible need for armed action. We forget this lesson today, or, more accurately, some forget, and many people don’t forget, but they usually don’t talk about it, except in hushed whispers.Of course, the farther one moves along the continuum from burglars to civil war, the greater the needed size of an armed action group. Aside from adequate numbers, what one needs for effective armed action, it seems to me, is three things: materiel, tactics, and training. For the time being, materiel in America is easy—one can now, in the free states, easily and legally equip a group with the majority of the accoutrement of an infantry platoon. Sure, no machine guns, and no explosives or man-portable artillery (such as what this book calls “close combat missile systemsâ€). But many likely scenarios don’t require use of even such moderately heavier infantry equipment, and for those that do, either such materiel will be available scattered in the street, or can be, um, “accessed†at need to complement the other items. This is demonstrable from recent history, such as the Balkan Wars.Tactics and training, though, are a harder nut to crack, even if they seem easy on the surface. These things go together, of course—knowledge of tactics isn’t much use without training, and most people aren’t going to spend the time to train adequately unless they have some critical immediate need. Unless one already has military training (which I don’t, although I have plenty of relatives and friends who do), or wants to spend the weekends playing soldier with fat men in camouflage living out fantasies of apocalyptic glory, there are limited options. The problem, of course, is that without tactics and training, having all the materiel in the world, even if you know basically how to use it, is of limited use in anything but static defense, and that only against other untrained people. But if you need something more in a hurry, you’re unlikely to be granted the luxury of several weeks of peace and free time to train and embed tactics in your brain.Nonetheless, imperfect as it is, I expect that is what most of the hushed whisperers intend—to learn on the fly, if necessary, by doing, if they have to. I endorse that plan as better than any alternative I can see. Really, though, I hope that if the balloon goes up, I can get some people with military experience who will do the training—one friend, in particular, comes to mind. In the meantime, though, it makes sense to lay in a few basic supplies. You know, a case of MREs, and some cheap binoculars. And military training manuals, of which this one is the most basic in the Army’s library, can’t hurt, along with some review of them.This is "Infantry Platoon and Squad," ATP 3-21.8 (ATP stands for “Army Techniques Publicationsâ€; this used to be called FM 7-8, for “Field Manualâ€). The American military publishes a few hundred of these manuals; some focus on strategy; some on functions such as riot and crowd control; and many on individual skills, such as rifle marksmanship and using heavier infantry weapons such as Javelin missiles. Your tax dollars at work. All are in the public domain (and easy to find and download), except for a few which appear to be restricted. "Infantry Platoon and Squad" is, it seems, targeted at the smallest unit of Army operations, and is meant to cover the basic functions of an infantry platoon, typically composed of about forty men, each commonly divided into four squads and a small group of leaders, with each squad further divided into two teams. (You can see how this structure works in action by reading, for example, Clinton Romesha’s recent "Red Platoon.")Reading "Infantry Platoon and Squad" gives the reader an effective overview of how this system works. Such knowledge is potentially useful both for training in tactics and their implementation, and for seeing how actions directed against you are unfolding. None of the information is startlingly new to anyone who pays some attention to war movies, YouTube combat videos, and the like, but it’s all packaged together in a thick book, with the upside of lots of detail, and the downside of lots of acronyms and government-speak. A fair bit of the book, too, is taken up with describing actions of mechanized platoons and squads, using accompanying armor from Bradley Fighting Vehicles to Abrams tanks (not the operation of those, but their coordination with infantrymen).Still, the book lays it all out competently, if drily. We get Organization, in which the granular composition from teams up is described, together with line drawings showing what the text means. We get Offense, from tasks to maneuver to formations to movement. We get Defense, from movement to obstacle creation to ambush execution. We get sections on larger-scale movement, in offense and defense, and we get very significant detail on patrols and patrolling, as well as various data on items of interest primarily to those contained within a larger chain of command. I think it a fair assumption that this covers all the basics, although frequent mention is also made of reading other specific Army training manuals for more information. Presumably, since these manuals are iterated, the information is accurate and complete. Finally, in the Appendixes, we get what I think is some of the most interesting data, including using and defeating wire and other obstacles, detailed specifics on activities such as wall and door breaching with shotguns, the use of anti-armor missiles, and so forth, as well as, most potentially useful of all, a series of “battle drills,†which, I am guessing, are the sort of thing done in Basic Training.There is pretty clearly an underserved market for the kind of training material I describe at the beginning of this review. A few such books exist, such as the decrepit "Light Infantry Tactics: For Small Teams," by Christopher Larsen. I would think that a series of several books with the Army’s (and other service branches’) manuals stripped down, rewritten in clear and edited civilian speak, properly illustrated and offering detailed and voluminous practical exercises that built on each other, would be something that a lot of people could find useful. Think of it as homeschooling for killing. Not that I’m volunteering to write such a series—I have better things to do, and anyway, my background knowledge is grossly inadequate. But a good writer with a military background could do worse than spend his time on this, especially since most mass-market survival books avoid such topics like the plague (as do books like Lewis Dartnell’s "The Knowledge," which purports to show how to rebuild civilization, but deliberately excludes any coverage at all of weapons and hunting gear). Market opportunity, anyone?

I must admit I often confuse a "debit" with a "credit" on my bank statement, so this book brought my knowledge level up considerably.I found it easy to leaf through to look up terms that I wanted more definition of, and I thumbed through learning the real meaning of many words I had heard before. Ferraino simply explains accounting and bookkeeping terms and how to effectively complete your tax forms. This is something that all will benefit from. She has a 9 page, extensive glossary of acronyms and abbreviations. I had seen several of these over my life time on bank and credit card statements, loan docs, etc and now am more familiar with the meanings.I can now use them properly. She explains the difference in a 401(K0 vs. a 529 plan. This reference covers a broad spectrum of accounting, tax, real estate, banking and book keeping terms. It will stay on the shelf for those crisis moments when I need to know more on a subject that I have shied away from. I will use it before business deals and contracts. At one time we put total trust into a CPA to do the right thing without questioning anything. He or she may have explained certain aspects or used acronyms and we just took it for their word without understanding what was really said. However, it seems now that our society is questioning everything and so it should. I learned so much! Although I felt I knew a lot I came away after reading the book knowing that I didn't. I learned things like Butterfly spread and Perpetual inventory LIFO. Of course the book covers definitions of things like Recession and Red ink making this book a must have for novices and the experienced. I also feel this book would be of utmost importance for every MBA student to have as a mandatory resource. This is a definite keeper in my resource library.

First, in the interest of full disclosure, let me state my views on translation.A translator's job is to translate. Not to improve. Not to bring in accordance with current ideas, values, or prejudices. Not to make choppy style clean. Not to make complex ideas (apparently) simple. A translator's job is to present a text as accurately as possible in the target language. I realize that there are other approaches to translation - but this is the one that I feel best serves both the original author and the reader.This is not an approach taken by the Late Dr. Meyer in this translation.It is clear from the introduction - and on every following page - that Dr. Meyer's primary commitment was to making the Nag Hammadi library palatable to modern readers - rather than presenting the text accurately.This is demonstrated throughout - and, to give credit, and least Dr. Meyer and the other translators make no excuses for their choices. They make it clear that they have consistently changed the meaning of the text to make the language fit current ideas.He says, very directly, "We have given special attention to issues of gender in our translations, and we employ inclusive language where the spirit of the Coptic text recommends it and where it does not compromise the accuracy of the translations."The spirit of the Coptic text? I'm not clear that Dr. Meyer - or anyone else, for that matter - was qualified to make that determination. His job - and that of the other translators - is to communicate what the text says. Not what they may believe the spirit recommends. And I can only disagree with Dr. Meyer that his changes do not compromise the accuracy of the translations. Putting in something that isn't there, based on a sense of the "spirit" of a text is, by definition compromising accuracy.When the text says "Son of Man" that should not - in my view - be mistranslated as "Child of Humanity." When the text says "Father," that should not become "Parent." When the text says, "He," that should not be transformed into "It."The text says what it says. It's the job of the translators to present that. Modern values may - or may not - be more advanced. But those ideas are not what's in the text. And - as a reader - I want to see what is there. Not what the Late Dr. Meyer and his colleagues felt should be there.In addition, the annotation adds very little value. To give credit - again - where deserved - many notes to mention that the translators have changed the clear meaning of the text. But, too often, the notes are simply Dr. Meyer's digressions on other similar mythologies which may or may not have any relevance to the text.Like another reviewer, I look forward to a digitized version of the original, 1977 translation. That translation is not without challenges - it's harder to read, and significantly less clear in many places. But, since it was published before Gnosticism became hip - and profitable - the original translation demonstrates a clear and consistent commitment to the text. I wish that were also the case with this important - but deeply flawed - work.
I began reading the Nag Hammadi scriptures in the early 80's when the James Robinson The Nag Hammadi Library: A Translation of the Gnostic Scriptures was first published. It was a hard read, mostly because there was so much missing (lacunae). This version makes it much more understandable but not without a price (see the excellent review by John Aaron regarding a little too much translation). Oh well, nobody is/was perfect except one.When I began reading this version, I imagined a round table of scholars who picked apart the essense of these ms's with the metaphorical microscope as a team and debated each and every translation problem. For how could only a few decide what the texts were saying with so many missing fragments and even whole pages/chapters? They used correlations with all available manuscripts to extract the essence of each manuscript and "fill in the blanks" to make it readable to the average person like me. Yes, it must have been like that.In some cases like The Gospel of Mary (of Magdala), we may not know all of what the High Priest said after he returned from death with just this manuscript because the first three chapters are missing. Maybe they wound up as fire-starter material for some poor people in Egypt? I don't blame them; we all need light/heat/food to dispel the darkness. A perfect solution. There are other works that are said to be the teaching of The Christ after he returned like Pistis Sophia: The Gnostic Tradition of Mary Magdalene, Jesus, and His Disciples.Yet, even the remnants of the Gospel of Mary are so profoundly beautiful; it is the single most beautiful thing I've read in my life. I need to find an older version to see where they deviate but, again, the essence must be there and only made clearer in this version. For anyone unfamiliar with the Gospel of Mary, imagine the scene given in Luke 24:10-11..."10 It was Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and the others with them who told this to the apostles. 11 But they did not believe the women, because their words seemed to them like nonsense."Why did their words seem like nonsense? Perhaps because they were so profound as to be not believable? Or perhaps for a more "practical" reason; the editors of the Bible did not want these more in depth details to be known. Teachings like this..."Peter Asks Mary to Teach: Peter said to Mary, “Sister, we know that the Savior loved you more than all other women. Tell us the words of the Savior that you remember, the things you know that we don’t because we haven’t heard them.†Mary responded, “I will teach you about what is hidden from you.†And she began to speak these words to them...."Mary Discusses Vision and Mind: She said, “I saw the Lord in a vision and I said to him, ‘Lord, I saw you today in a vision.’ “He answered me, ‘Blessed are you for not wavering at seeing me. For where the mind is, there is the treasure.’ ~ The Nag Hammadi Scriptures (p. 743)I'd like to say more about the Gospel of Mary but it's hard without giving examples and Amazon would probably say it's copyright infringement and not put up my review.For another good example of how the NH not only clarifies but expands and elucidates, see Mark 8:27-30 - Jesus asked them, "who do people say I am?" In the Bible, Peter (and others) respond "You are the Messiah" "one of the prophets" etc. But is that all of it? There were some other replies like that of Thomas..."Jesus said to his disciples, “Compare me to something and tell me what I am like.†Simon Peter said to him, “You are like a just messenger.†Matthew said to him, “You are like a wise philosopher.†Thomas said to him, “Teacher, my mouth is utterly unable to say what you are like.†Jesus said, “I am not your teacher. Because you have drunk, you have become intoxicated from the bubbling spring that I have tended.†And he took him, and withdrew, and spoke three sayings to him. When Thomas came back to his friends, they asked him, “What did Jesus say to you?†Thomas said to them, “If I tell you one of the sayings he spoke to me, you will pick up rocks and stone me, and fire will come from the rocks and consume you." ~ The Gospel of Thomas, 13So did Jesus say "who do the people say I am?" He already knew what people said before they said or thought it. Isn't it more plausible that Jesus asked his desciples, who were closest to him, who they thought he was?There is so much more in the NHS especially regarding the Old Testament. That the word "Elohim" is both singular and plural is a clue. El is really the singular of Elohim. The names of God in the OT have been reduced to meaningless interchangable words. Yahweh, Jehovah, Elohim; do these names all mean the same thing? Are they interchangable like a car, a vehicle, an automobile? I think not. The belief of early Christian Gnostics was that the "God" of the OT was not the one true God. The one that Jesus called "Father." This is the key to understanding the OT. The "demigurge" or archon(s) are themselves temporary and subordinate to God the Father and Christ. If only Christians would put aside what they were TOLD by their Mystery Babylon occult rulers and read/research for themselves."For what goes into your mouth will not defile you; rather, it is what comes out of your mouth that will defile you.†~ The Gospel of Thomas 14, Matthew 15:11"Jesus did many other things as well. If every one of them were written down, I suppose that even the whole world would not have room for the books that would be written." ~ John 21:25I suppose He said many other things as well.
I bought this book but later read a review that some thing were altered from the 1977 edition. So I bought the 1977 edition to stay true to the Word. Even if you buy this edition, it will still give a new perspective to scripture that you won't learn in our current bible, your church or bible studies... it shakes you back to the reality of the truth and other gospels teachings.
I have a re-occuring problem with these paperback form text books. While the actual size of the text is fine, the print is too light. It makes for an incredible amount of eye strain and fatigue! The light ink prolongs the time it takes to read through the book and I love to read! Seems like these larger paperbacks (ones that have over 800+ pages) have this issue. I ordered the Keys of Enoch nearly 2 years ago and still can't get through it! Perhaps it is the lesser quality paper they use to keep costs down that prevents the use of darker ink. I say, improve the paper quality and charge more for the book please!Note about the content: This book will revise your beliefs on everything you thought you knew. Don't try skipping around chapters either. Your understanding of the material will depend on your disciplined progression. I have reread the Tripartite Tractate 3x's just to be absolutely certain that I understood it well enough to explain to another. Its profoundly enlightening!

I am a huge Supernatural fan and having been watching it from the beginning. So, of course, I bought this book as soon as I could. I have to say, I'm a little bummed. On the one hand, most of it is very well done and I enjoy that it's "written" by Sam and Dean. However, they really should have fact checked better. Some of the stuff they have is just not correct. For instance, in the Wendigo section, it says that they first encountered one in Rhode Island and that Dean took it out with a flare gun. In the season 1 episode Wendigo they did first encounter one and Dean took it out with a flare gun...in Black Water Ridge, Colorado. There are a few other places where they have similar information that just isn't correct. Most of the illustrations are phenomenal. However, the ones that are supposed to be of people we've met are really not very good likenesses. I was very disappointed in that. It could have been a truly wonderful tie-in...if they had edited and fact checked better.
This book didn't meet my full expectations. First off, it's a nice "creative/artistic" book with some information, but its coming from "Sam" and "Dean" which is cool, you would think. The disappointment is, not every monster/supernatural being they dealt with is in this book. There's some information, but its as if the writer was only trying to match what Sam/Dean would say and not reveal full knowledge of each. Also, a few errors here and there.I was expecting this book to contain every (every) single monster/ghost/being from each episode of Supernatural. I'd also prefer a full "index" type book, like how in the show, where they'd talk about searching through the "lore" about, like the creatures weaknesses, strengths, and how to kill it. Also, it would be nice to know what season and maybe what episode it was in. Now, that would be a decent Supernatural Monster book.Again, its a great art book, but that was its main priority - the art.
It is a good book but some of the information on it is wrong. For example when they are talking about Lucifer they mention that Michael got stuck in the cage with him when Lucifer was first cast out which is not true. Michael is dragged into the cage with Sam and Lucifer at the end of season 5. Also the illustrations of some of the characters that we have met dont match the actor. But it was a good book.
Oh my gosh - I am in the process of reading it, and I totally love it. The comments on the various creatures are written as though it is either Sam (typing) or Dean (handwriting) themselves who are providing the info. It is a fun book and I'm sure that anyone who is a bigtime Supernatural fan, like me, will love this book.
The art in this is DISMAL. The characters look like starved, furious cartoons of themselves. If you looked at a drawing with no written context you would not be able to identify them. Not even Sam or Dean. Very disappointed in this book. Bought as a gift early fall and didn’t open until Christmas so the return window is closed.
If you know someone that loves this show and has any sort of collection with items from the franchise, this is likely to be the new centerpiece.
The book is great, however mine arrived damaged and I had to get a replacement.
