About the Author
Francisco Cantú was an agent for the United States Border Patrol from 2008 to 2012, working in the deserts of Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas. A former Fulbright fellow, he is the recipient of a Pushcart Prize, a 2017 Whiting Award, and a 2018 Art for Justice fellowship. His writing and translations have been featured in The New York Times, Best American Essays, Harper's, and Guernica, as well as on This American Life. He lives in Tucson and coordinates the Southwest Field Studies in Writing Program at the University of Arizona.

As a strongly conservative person, I was ready to delve into this book anticipating a strong liberal bias that would label me a bigot. I was ready to feel outraged as yet another person would, in print no less, tell me how I just don’t understand what is going on with regards to the immigration issue. While I know that I can’t fully understand Jose’s plight, I can surely empathize and sympathize with him and for him. It was a relief to me to be surprised by Francisco Cantu’s book.I lived in the Rio Grande Valley for 47 years and have seen firsthand the complexities involved in this issue. My brother was killed when a group of Mexican teenagers and their polleros were evading the police. The car they were in T-boned my brothers car at an intersection and cut him in two.A very good friend of mine, Hispanic as well, is a Border patrol agent. He qualified himself to work on the Rio Grande River in boats, on ATV out in the field and has also worked at the US Border Patrol sector headquarters. We spoke often, way before this book, about the things he has seen and done throughout his years as a CBP agent. How they are always being watched by lookouts from the south side of the river as they patrol the US side. He described the smell of decomposing bodies left behind in the brush land, or finding people under the full effect of heat stroke. He has told me about the taunts they receive as the polleros just escape back across the river. Cantu’s book reminded me a lot of my friend’s recollections. It also help me understand a little more of why he won’t speak too much about his feelings. I sense he is empathetic towards those he has stopped and believe he has genuine sympathy for them, but he also insists that what he is doing needs to be continued. He feels that even if stopping 1000 crossers only yields a few really dangerous people, he has improved life for His family on the US side.Living in Dallas for 3 1/2 years now, I have seen how much of it is being built by undocumented people. I know people, who like Jose stay under the radar by working and going home, day after day, and strive to live in peace. Some of them submitting themselves to unjust treatment because it is a better alternative than going back to their home country. I have been surprised at this treatment because it comes, many times, at the hands of Latinos who are fortunate enough to have legal status.This issue is very complex, and it angers me when people and politicians distill it down to platitudes. This has been done for far too long by people on every side of the argument. Usually, it has been done for personal gain and without any real knowledge of what it is like to live in an area affected by this, or any real knowledge of the people living through this.Thank you Mr. Cantu for writing this book, I wept through many sections and it has given me some resolve to help where I can. If anyone has strong feelings on either side of the immigration and citizenship problems of the US, I urge you to add this book to your references on the subject.
I picked up this book because the subject is topical and my local news suggested it contained some politically controversial material. The only thing that makes this book controversial is the presently vocal anti-immigrant hysteria of the American political Right. If the book had come out two years ago, no one would be declaring it controversial.An autobiographical story told in first person and covering a roughly 10 year period from the author's college graduation with a political science degree through and beyond his four year stint in the U.S. border patrol serving the south western United States. The author, being of Mexican heritage and raised in the South West, was drawn to the international border between the U.S. and Mexico, joining the border patrol to, as he put it, bring the theory he studied down to earth.There are a few flash backs to his earlier life, and some history of the border region, the 1860s war with Mexico that added the South West territories, Texas, and the southern half of California to the U.S. map, and also the impact of the Mexican Revolution of 1911. Much of the emotional conflict is revealed through dreams he had while serving on the border and later as his life never let him forget what he experienced.This is the story of a compassionate man in an in-compassionate job. He relates incidences of drug seizures, but notes that most of what he had to do was capture and return to Mexico people who wanted nothing more than to do some honest work and in many cases reunite with wives and in particular children born in the U.S. and so citizens. Many of these people die trying. Unlike a generation back, when crossing the border was relatively easy whether for work or criminal activity, it is now much more difficult and only the criminals have the resources to assure themselves of making the trip alive. The rest take their chances and thousands do not make it. The cruelty of criminal groups escorting migrants is on full display. People who cannot keep up in the many miles long trek across stony and water-less desert are simply left behind to die. The border patrol itself is complicit in some of these deaths destroying water and food, meant to sustain these people, where ever they find it.After four years the author cannot take more and quits the border patrol. The remainder of the book relates a friendship he develops with an undocumented Mexican immigrant who becomes trapped in the system, torn from his wife and children simply because he returns to Mexico to be with his dying mother and bury her. From there, he cannot get back and every attempt to do so traps him deeper and deeper in a system that cares nothing for compassionate people.This book is not political. Cantu avoids even mentioning much of politics, but merely reports what he experiences of an indifferent system and those trapped by it. He is most surely not opposed to interdicting drugs and deporting real criminals, but the vast majority of the migrant people involved are neither drug runners or criminals, but only criminalized by their desire to work and share a life with their spouses and children. If you are a compassionate person the book might bring you to tears. It is an honest report of the impact of an impersonal system on the lives of thousands of individuals who want nothing more than a life for themselves and their families. The political is mostly notable for its absence as the author tries, likely in vain for these times, to personalize these stories. There is nothing more controversial about it than that.
Francisco Cantu has a very interesting story to tell. Descended from Mexican immigrants, his family and the traditions associated with extended kinship are a central prism through which his story unfolds. A story that encompasses the two sides of the border, the people who cross the border searching for the american dream, and the people whose job it is to apply the law in order to secure that border. As a Border Patrol agent he is in the front line of this saga, witnessing firsthand the desperation and determination of the migrants who risk everything for a better way of life. The exploitation that they suffer at the hands of the smugglers who view them as just an income stream, and the inhumanity of the judicial system that only recognizes them as illegal aliens, committing a federal offense.However, once they cross, the migrants are the epitome of the hard working immigrants making good in their adopted country, having to suffer the perennial stigma of being undocumented, with all the trials and tribulations that come with that condition.Cantu does not offer any policy solutions, rather he just tells the stories of the people that are players in this drama. This is the strength of the book.
Fascinating read. The first chapter, I hated him because the situation at the border was so sad, but then I grew to like him. I was so engrossed that I read it fast. He mixes the facts and his life as a border patrol agent with beautiful descriptions of the states he worked in, the people he worked with and the life he lived. He's a great author and I would read more. I'm online now looking for more books on the border, as my interest is piqued!

Yet again another book written with little research and loosely based on the writer's store of general knowledge. While I have no way of knowing the accuracy of the army terms, I do know medical facts. The main character wanted to apply a tourniquet to a stitched wound that was no longer bleeding, but "had to make so with a regular bandage instead". WHY? To make him lose his leg? Apparently DC is full of "doe eyed" people, bc the author only uses that term or "sunken eyes" to describe everyone (plus the obligatory mention of a "thousand yard stare" that seems to be in most books). The other ridiculous descriptions include a smile that turns a moustache into a "wriggly black worm". I can't roll my eyes hard enough. The main character is meant to be portrayed as a tough female hero, but comes out as ridiculous when handled by the author. People are staring in open-mouthed awe as this chick spins wheels in her truck, speeding off to be a hero. Good grief. Amateur writing at it's mediocre.
This is a fast-paced and suspenseful post-apocalyptic thriller that features a woman torn between her duty to her country and duty to her family. It perfectly portrays the mayhem that would result from an electromagnetic pulse attack. Moreover, it depicts how familial love prevails and everything else comes second when a cataclysm occurs. Furthermore, it highlights the sacrifice a parent is willing to make for his or her offspring.The author successfully creates a set of well-developed and relatable characters especially Sergeant Harper Murphy. Though the ending is a cliffhanger, with this book being part of a series, it has a kind of closure that makes the story satisfactory.

Hopefully there will be “civilized†humans that will show the courage exhibited by Harper Murphy.Excellent short story. Only wished it lasted longer, but understand a short story is a “short†story. A supermom who is also an Army Sergeant tries to mother her husband, son, and any victims in her path, as she struggles through the havoc created by a massive EMP attack and a ruthless army of "foreign speaking" invaders attacking the US capitol. The hero's feats sometimes strain credulity, but the book is a pretty good yarn and an easy read.
Usually I love post-apocalyptic books, and this one has a story line that could go somewhere interesting. Unfortunately, it seems the author found a thesaurus of descriptive words and is determined to use them all. For an example: The son passes some Advil tablets to his mom. It reads like this - "Two brown circles were cradled in the soft dip of his hand. Harper glanced in the rearview. The tunnel of wind turned her son's thick mop of hair into a frenzy of fur with bangs that swept against his youthful eyes and triangular nose"This constant barrage of descriptive words make reading painful. I got the next book in the sequence at the same time as I got this one (both were offered freebies on Amazon), but can't make myself continue this journey.
Love it. Fast pace right from the beginning and it doesn't stop. I'm going to start book 1 tomorrow and can't wait to finish the series. If you love action...this is it! It's also an eye opener in a way. When the world turns to poo...be prepared to fight or get trampled. Book 0 only covers the first few hours after the EMP hits but Harper proves that when determined, anything is possible.

My family decided we wanted to eat better than what we've been doing and so I purchased this book through one of my e-reader daily deals. Boy have we been pleased with the results so far. Lots of fresh veggies and lean meats, or not. But the biggest and best are the herbs and spices that bring out these wonderful flavors. Even the early teen kiddos have enjoyed most of the meals. Worth every penny!
This book had a nice variety of easy recipes, as well as some more exotic sounding ones too (squid, anyone?). Best thing of all, I didn't really see what looked like a tough recipe. Sure, some had longer ingredient lists, but the prep work and cooking was very simple. Most recipes could be made with what I keep on hand in my kitchen.I am now making mental notes of what I want to try from this recipe book next time I cook!
Creamless cauliflower soup, are you kidding me? This girl's been around- ill. Yeah it's good. Lots of low cost and low commitment meals to try

Every since reading The Dreamer by Pamela Munoz Ryan, I have been trying to figure out how to ladder it for certain students. With this book, I have found the perfect introduction. Brown does a fabulous job of summarizing Neruda's life into 32 pages and still manage to touch on important facts and themes. The text is enhanced by Paschkis' illustrations in wonderful earth tones and with words in English & Spanish woven into the design. I read the book through once and then returned to just admire and analyze the pictures. Definitely a must have for any collection on poets, especially Neruda. Additionally the students and teachers I have shared this book with have certainly reacted as I hoped.
Absolutely stunning illustrations---I teach children's art at several schools and used it (plus an interview with Julie I found on You Tube)and had the children use words in their drawings to express their visuals in an expanded way--Also wanted them to know all the workthat goes into illustrating a book, which was shown on the clip from the Internet. The story was so beautifully told--but I have to admit, I bought it for the amazing way it was illustrated. The story and the images were a near perfect blend--loved it! Bravo to both artists who brought it all to life--No doubt if Pablo was still around he would write them each a poem in thanks. Maleita Wise
The art is fantastic in this sweet book for children. Neruda is one of the greatest poets and the writer & illustrator have donean amazing job bringing his life into view for young ones. BRAVO!

Readers do not have to know who Pablo Neruda is/was to enjoy & be moved by this beautiful picture book. Monica Brown has brought another biography to not only highlight important Latinos but to emphasis the joy of words, books & the joy of working hard to accomplish your passion. Hopefully, readers will note the importance of teachers in Neruda's life. With introduction by teachers, librarians & other adults this book, as so many books do, could change children's lives. Julie Paschkis' charming & flowing illustrations in spectacular colors that make the eyes smile make this book fantastic. The streams of words in English & Spanish add to the text though are not bilingual. Surely, every library that serves children should find some way to add this book to their collection.

The relationship between employee and employer has never been smooth. Even back in Dickens "A Christman Carol" the relationship was strained. Then around the turn of the last century we had all the efforts with the unions being developed. Now unions are declining and the lawyers have taken over.I've had my share of working for bad managers. In fact there've only been a couple that I would have rated as good. Those managers followed the rules that Mr. Janove has written down. This is good legal advice, but it is just plain good management advice as well. This is the way you would want to be treated by a manager, and it is clearly the way you should treat your employees.The eight deadly sins he defines are not coached in legal terms, they are just good common sense that we should all follow.

I'm no memory expert, but I've lived long enough in my short life to know that good structure helps me memorize things. The organizational structure of the book is conductive to memorizing the lessons and providing a quick reference. This is because the book utilizes strong visual analogies and the writing is clear and concise.Before reading the book, I expected it to be like some of the self-improvement or self-help books I had read in the past. For example, I used to own a book about how CEO's supposedly think, which was recommended to me by a friend a few years ago. I didn't actually finish that particular book because the writing was lackluster and the information was difficult to visualize and remember. "Managing to Stay Out of Court" succeeds because it doesn't take the reader for stupid. I felt like the author was genuinely interested in helping the reader succeed, which is a key attitude I look for in these kinds of books.My two favorite parts of the book were (1) the legal nuggets and (2) the anecdotes or stories. I think everyone loves anecdotes and stories. The book's stories add a lot of substance to the pinpoint lessons and really help solidify the book's lessons. They also keep the book moving at a fast pace. I've noticed that the least useful informational books are the dry ones - the ones without stories or analogies. I know it's hard for me to internalize a lesson absent a concrete example. The legal nuggets were also helpful because they gave me a sense of the black letter law surrounding employment disputes. This helped me think in terms of avoiding big problems.There are many people out there who simply don't know what to do or say in their organization, or they fear taking on a strong leadership role. For those kinds of people, "Managing to Stay Out of Court" would be a helpful reference - it would provide them tools they never had the confidence, guidance, or knowledge to utilize. As someone who has held leadership roles in several organizations, I can say that this book was an effective asset to my ability to prevent and solve organization problems effectively.
Managing to Stay Out of Court: How to Avoid the Eight Deadly Sins of Mismanagement is one of the best management books I've read! The format was well organized, with Legal Nuggets, Tools and Techniques, and chapter Highlights. The Highlights after each chapter encapsulate very well the key points of the book. I also think the author's format keeps the reader engaged. I thought it was effective how the analogy to skiing is used throughout the book - in managing with the weight forward (proactive) versus leaning back (avoidance) tendency. I kept thinking how true it is that managers tend to lean back rather than put weight forward and deal with issues. The battery analogy to remind you to D-I-S (Direct, Immediate, Specific) in dealing effectively with the negative and positive aspects of employee performance was also good. My favorite analogy was the "Gunnysack" approach in which managers tend to place performance issues in a gunnysack. Rather than using the D-I-S method, they save up the performance issues until they dump them all at once on the employee. I could also see the author's love of history coming out in his references to history - as in the FDR and Harry Hopkin's story. I also enjoyed how the book weaves references/quotes from literature throughout the book. I noticed the author used himself as an example in a few of the stories, which I enjoyed. The tips offered on effective listening were excellent. I found myself taking a few notes. I also liked how the book tied it all together with the "skiing the run" examples. From a Human Resource Director's perspective, this book is full of practical, insightful advice. I know I plan on incorporating the tools.
Jathan Janove provides excellent guidance and direction in terms of avoiding litigation land mines and helping corporate leaders insulate their companies from employment-related liability. A great read and an excellent book!
