The first book that I read by the very peripatetic Dervla Murphy was In Ethiopia with a Mule. It is an account of her 1000-mile trip across the highlands of Ethiopia, in 1967, solo, save for the mule which carried her belonging. For many of us, that would have been THE impressive idiosyncratic achievement of a lifetime. Not so for Ms. Murphy, who sees an obscure place on the globe, and has to go there, and savor it, usually via unconventional means. I gave the Ethiopia book only a 4-star review, since I was annoyed that throughout the long journey she was incapable of loading her own mule, and always had to rely on the "kindness of strangers." That flaw in her travel mode was not present in this book... in fact, she seemed to "double down" in terms of challenges... at the age of 51, in 1983, instead of being accompanied by a mule, it was her (beloved) 14 year old daughter! Ah, that all teenagers might have such an experience.Just the first chapter, an excellent history of the island, is worth the purchase price. It was the largest fertile area of the world that was uninhabited until the arrival of Malayo-Polynesian groups around 900 AD. Various African groups came thereafter. Then the Portuguese showed up in 1500, and then the English and the French showed tepid interest for a few centuries. Only well into the 19th century did the London Missionary Society get serious in sending missionaries, who are often the advance wave of colonists, as all too many colonized have learned. In 1896 Madagascar officially became a French colony, which was its status until independence in 1960. The human settlement and interactions there have been historically unique, but what truly sets the island off, in terms of uniqueness, is its flora and fauna, with numerous species found only there, and nowhere else in the world.Murphy wrangled a visa, and an all-important "permission letter" of the "to whom it may concern" variety from the embassy in Paris. She and her daughter flew there the cheap way - via Aeroflot and Moscow, arriving in the capital, Antananarivo, mercifully called "Tana." The newly independent government's push for autarky means that few things work well; and many things don't work at all. Imports are virtually non-existent. And in particular, for a traveler, the roads are abysmal; in some cases they are passable only on foot. And for sure, the buses don't run on that very alien concept: "time." Rather, they run when they are full... and don't break down.In what seemed to be a couple of months, they covered a large part of the southern two-thirds of the island. The central highlands are the most populous, and the town of Antsirabe (the "Vichy," that is, the spas and mineral springs, of Madagascar) seems to be the most viable and enjoyable. They went to the western coastal town of Tulear, but stopped to see the lemurs on the way, in the Parc National d'Isalo. Due to the lack of accommodation, they camped there. They checked the guest book, and there was only one page of names spanning a decade. (I checked on the internet, and there is now a very nice looking lodge there.) One of the "gutsy" (or crazy?) things they did was camp in the wild on several occasions. From Tulear they had another epic journey by vehicle, spanning days, across the southern part of the island, to Fort Dauphin. And then it was back to Tana, and beyond to the coast, with broken vehicles along the way, and a fairly vigorous hike at the end.Murphy is a keen observer of all, and has strong descriptive powers. She also carries a fair load of erudition, and weaves it into her account. The people, though poor, and in a daily struggle for so much that the "civilized" west takes for granted, seem to be happier, and certainly kinder to the stranger that she and her daughter are. Yet, and Murphy specifically makes this point, the island is no Rousseau fantasy. There is evil and unhappiness there also.She has been criticized for being too "new age." I didn't see that in particular, but I did feel she was a bit reckless in the treatment of her own health, particularly after being cut with a knife. In terms of her observations, I've marked many a passage, one of the best being: "The distortion of human relationships, rather than the building of Holiday Inns or the sprouting of souvenir stalls, is the single most damaging consequence of Third World tourism." Murphy also quoted extensively from Dr. Alison Jolly's naturalist work A World Like Our Own: Man and Nature in Madagascar, which is a book I've owned for 30 years, and have yet to read. Murphy's push will finally remedy that deficiency. Overall, 5-stars.
Excellent book, and this month's choice for our book club. We meet in the local library one day a week, and over half of the group is composed of retired teachers so we are all very well read, but the Malagasy language does give us some problems. We have found it almost impossible to even begin to pronounce most of the native words which Ms. Murphy has to use to describe her experiences. Nevertheless, other than creating breaks and causing a lot of laughter, that doesn't detract from the excellence of her (and her daughter's) adventure. On a more personal note, when I first read the book several years ago it pushed me toward reading the adventures of Sir Richard Burton, and then I spent over a year reading everything I could find related to the search for the source of the Nile. I love it when reading a single great book becomes the start of an extended adventure.
Having traveled through Madagascar recently, I found Murphy's book spot-on. Her own journey, undertaken some thirty years ago, still accurately captures the spirit of the Big Red Island. Yes -- much has changed, yet in many respects, the country away from its few paved roads remains unchangeable. The south retains its spirit of timeless isolation. Rice cultivation dominates the central highlands. The west and east contrast with each other in every conceivable respect. Those acute shortages described by Murphy in such detail seem to be a matter of the past; a traveler in today's Madagascar is not at risk of starving, and hunger like that in neighboring Africa hasn't afflicted the country to a similar extent, but for ordinary Malagasy, life continues to be a struggle. Education, medical care, security -- none of these have changed so markedly over the last three decades as to make Murphy's novel a tale of the bygone past.Few travel writers have such an innate ability to go beyond the obvious -- after all, there are many books on Madagascar, and even more in French, but I found few (if any) that capture the essence of the country as well as Murphy. Madagascar is sometimes baffling and often inexplicable. Much of its richness lies underneath its surface: tradition remains a powerful force not just in far-flung villages. The Malagasy temperament, the joye de vivre of its people, the good natured rambunctiousness of their children even after being stuffed into a bursting taxi brousse for 24-hours, the graciousness of strangers -- none of it is easy to describe, yet Murphy does so unerringly."Muddling Through Madagascar" isn't just a story of a long-ago trip through an exotic country; the human element that Murphy evokes, puts the books in the same league as the writings of Paul Theroux or Bruce Chatwin or Peter Matthiessen. It's an inspired, timeless piece of travel non-fiction. As interesting as it is for anybody lucky-enough to have spent time in Madagascar, it is also a remarkable book for the armchair traveler, vividly bringing the world that's Out There into the living room. The experience of traveling, going "there" from "here," all its trials and tribulations, as well as the more obvious rewards, makes for genuinely inspired reading. This book was recommended by a world travelers book. Because it was available on kindle, I purchased it. So glad I did! While I expect Madagascar to have changed a bit since the writing, I'm familiar enough with African culture to know it won't have changed too much. I am prepared and looking forward to my own Madagascar exploration!
I enjoyed this book because after visiting Madagascar and returning 5 times it is the most accurate book about what it is really like to be a guest in this beautiful country. I appreaciated the authors respect for the Malagasy people that I have come to love and admire. This is a great treatise in cross-cultural adaptation, wandering through a culture in which you have no clue what the rules and values are about.

Definitely the go to source for all things canning. Didn't expect the volume to be as large as it is, but it is amazingly complete and covers each subject area thoroughly. This book is not a sit down and read cover to cover type of text. Once you read the chapters that you must understand to can safely then you refer to the specific food item you wish to can and follow the step by step directions. The first 2 or three chapters will give you a complete and unabridged understanding of the how, why's and required tools. So do not sell yourself short, gain the knowledge and then you can safely do a huge number of things that will literally last for a year or more. The most recent changes in the book are concerned with the maximum allowable time for foods to remain in a jar which is due to a formula chane in the sealing ring on the undersides of the flat lids. Ball, Kerr and Jarden have all collaborated to bring all of this info to one text that has everything you need all at your fingertips. Worth the money and indispensable especially for a canning newcomer.
Excellent book! Has fantastic recipes. I am very pleased with the contents.One word of warning about The Good Will however, I bought my copy through a third party seller, paid about six dollars. It was from The Good Will, the book was listed as Very Good Condition. When it arrived, it was crusted with food. The book had a crust, it was gross. It's the second book from The Good Will I've purchased, and both were listed as Very Good Condition, and both had something wrong. The other book had dead roaches smashed inside the cover and the cover was sticky. The cover of that book was actually white, and not antique brown like I originally thought when it arrived. Apparently to The Good Will, Very Good also means Very Dirty.

I kinda see what they mean. It is not regular "book strength" paper, but it is not as flimsy as "magazine paper". It's a little bit stronger than that. It is glossy so you can wipe it off. Being a canning newbie and having this book in my hand, I would absoutely recommend this book to anyone starting out in canning. Do not let the nit-picking reviews stop you. This is a very good foundational book.
I mourned the loss of my original copy lost during moving. It must have gotten mixed in with books to donate. I used it for many years canning and preserving the foods my late husband and I grew in our garden. Though I no longer can as much as I used to, I still use it when I receive an abundance of fruits and vegetables from others or purchase from the farmers market.
I bought this book because it was really a good guide to canning fruits and vegetable. Something happened to my copy and I bought this one which is the best edition I had ever used. The new edition has a lot of recipes but that is not what I needed. I needed the canning instructions. Of course I lost my marginal notes but I will get those back. I was just glad the Amazon had one.
I'm a newbie canner and started my obsession with "Canning for a New Generation". Being a new canner, I still have plenty of "holes" in my knowledge and I wanted to know how to can much simpler recipes. This is my go to book for that. The recipes are simple and "old-fashioned" but they are great to use as a reference. I like the fact that it is so versatile. If you want to make heavy syrup, honey syrup, extra light syrup to can your fruits in, you can. If you want to can just green beans, you can. Instead of having complicated recipes, it's basic fruit and vegetable canning. It's great and has already been used....a lot. I will cross reference it with recipes from my other more "gourmet" canning books and often times have this open along side my other books!
I have a Ball Blue Book I received from my mother when she passed away 12 years ago, and it was hers for many years, so it was pretty old by the time I got it. I used it a lot and the recipes were always spot on. It is the canner's "bible". Recently my sister-in-law in another state e-mailed me and lamented that she had tried to make peach jam and described the result. Well, she had done just about everything wrong! Get this--she had tried to water bath them in a rice cooker, for one thing...I immediately ordered this book for her and she is overjoyed. It hasn't changed much since my old edition, which is actually something that is an excellent selling point.

This story was originally published with a longer text by Viking Press in 1991.This tale focuses on Hershel, a blind boy who lives with his widowed mother. He spends many days by the river constructing different objects in the mud. He loves what he is able to create. His mother feels that his disability limits his overall abilities. During Purim, Hershel demonstrates that he is capable despite his limitations. This uplifting story provides information about the celebration of Purim, shtetl life, and how the human spirit can overcome diversity.
A beautiful tale that made tears spring to my eyes.Accepting and being happy with what you've got, and turning one's challenges into strengths are essential messages for teaching happiness, tolerance and genuine success in life. This is a great story to spark discussions or just a great story by itself. If you like this story you will love Yussel's Prayer, a Yom Kippur story. Can't read that one without tears in my eyes either.I loved the earlier edition as the simple joyful illustrations conveyed the meaning and tone of the story. Not sure about the newer version (I just ordered a used copy of the original).

The book was in excellent condition and arrived in a timely fashion. i bought it to read to my religious school class about children who have different abilities. The boy in this story is blind, and he wants to make Purim cookies. It shows how children with alimitation can still do anything.
This is a cute story but it didn't strike me as terribly inspired but I'm an author myself so a little more critical than the average bear. The kids liked it. The pictures are high quality.
Hershel is blind from a childhood illness. (measles?) He is a very independent and competent young boy.He wants to help his widowed mother, Basha, prepare hamantaschen to sell, but he cannot see to make them..An angel appears to him in a dream and reminds him that he can "see" when he closes his eyes or dreams.One night his mother left dough out to roll and cut in the morning. After bedtime, Hershel comes to the kitchen and shapes the dough into beautiful cookies, which Basha bakes the following day. The creative cookies sell out at the market. And Hershel sees even more possibilites for his future.This is not a "Purim Tale," but rather a story that takes place at Purim time.
Hershel smiled as a couple of pears dropped to the ground when he swung from a branch. He was not supposed to be able to do things other boys did, including catching bullfrogs, but Hershel was determined. He was also blind, but that really didn't matter, but he when "he tried to wash the mud off his clothes before he went home," he lamented, "he always missed a patch or two. No way he wanted to make more work for his widowed mother, Basha, but it happened now and then. Basha worked very, very hard to take care of them, especially when Purim was near in early spring. She baked "three-cornered fat cakes called hamantashen" to sell. Ah, they smelled so good!Perhaps, Basha thought, that if she worked hard enough selling the hamantashen, she could by chickens. Herschel wanted to help, and his face sank when she said, "But you cannot see to make them." Disappointment surrounded him that night as he nestled under the covers. "If only I could see and help my mother more," he whispered to himself. Herschel's eyes hadn't seen for a long time, but a swirling angel who came to him in the night declared that he should "Make what you see." The beautiful angel swirled above his bed the night before Purim, but what did she mean? Was there something special in store for Herschel and Basha?This is a heartwarming story of Purim and Herschel's determination to make it special. This tale is an abbreviated version, replete with new beautiful illustrations, relayed in a picture book format. The gorgeous, full-page illustrations bring life to the tale as Herschel attempts to make his dreams come true. The confident reader can tackle this tale, but it is most likely meant to be read during circle or storytime in the homeschool, classroom, or a religious education setting. The twist at the end is one that tells all children that yes indeed, they are special and dreams do come true. We play a unique amateurish Love Ping Pong style--we switch hands, playing both right and left or two paddle--American and Chinese grips. None of the tech stuff.. but we have great concentration, skill and are going on 160 years jointly.
I checked this book out expecting it to be an instructional book of table tennis. Nevertheless, I proceeded to read beyond the first few pages of the book and was enveloped in a different side of table tennis that I have never looked into before.For a person who would like an instructional book, "Sizzling Chops and Devilish Spins," is not going to be the right book for you, but if you would like to read a book filled with witty anecdotes and info about the greatest players of all times (e.g. Dick Miles, Marty Reisman...etc) then this book should not be overlooked.
Jerome Charyn is a good writer and also a table tennis lover. He writes about the sport with many colorful analogies and clever expressions, sometimes using French without translating it. For me, it got a bit tiring, but it could be enjoyable if you like his creative writing style.Much of the book is rehashing of the stuff in Marty Reisman's "The Money Player" and Tim Boggan's books. But Jerome also interviewed many people for the book and adds new perspectives to some well known figures in the sport from these interviews.I noticed an occasional mistake in the book, but not many. It is mostly well researched.
Delving into this book is like opening the lid of a treasure chest. It's filled with gems of information about a forgotten era when ping-pong was in its heyday in the borough of Manhattan--at a spot called Lawrence's Broadway Courts. There played the biggest names in table tennis from around the world and produced such U.S. champions as Marty Reisman and Dick Miles. But the best part of the book is the delightful writing of Jerome Charyn. His sentences are so interesting and evocative that I couldn't stop reading it once I began. You actually look forward to picking up where you left off. If you've ever picked up a paddle and found yourself hooked, or if you are any kind of paddle or raquet sport enthusiast, this book is a must buy.

Maybe my review is colored by the fact that the Amazon "preview" was a screenshot of the cover and I bought this on faith after reading the reviews, both 5 stars and 1 star. I got burnt. The authors work is wondrous. The narrative of how they collaborated is boring. The instructions and illustrations are minimal and vague, almost as if the authors don't want you to duplicate their results, unlike many master artists in history.If Amazon had a decent preview of the instructions in this book, I would not have bought it. Live and learn ... I'll not buy another Amazon book without a decent preview.
This book is one of the best polymer books out there. The projects are new and different with step by step directions that seem well thought out and complete. Photography is exceptional and it covers a variety of techniques and styles. What makes this book different than the other really good project books is the look inside the artists mind. I enjoyed seeing the thought processes of each artist as they worked through their concepts to execution and how they were able to work together with artists that had different styles and work habits. The book goes over all basic techniques but is one of the few books that can also accommodate experienced clayers. Most polymer books get flipped through for projects and used to follow the step by steps to learn a technique. This book has all that and more. I read this book cover to cover and enjoyed the story of how this group of artists created several collaborative projects and describe their working process, strengths and weaknesses. I consider Polymer Clay Master Class a must have for all polymer artists but I believe artists of any media would enjoy and benefit from the story of the collaborative experience. - Robin Milne (Pres. I purchased this book out of curiosity, drawn to its beautiful images. I discovered readable text, clear instructions with pictures to match, and most surprisingly of all a story of collaboration and consideration. The concept for this book was brilliant, and I hope Ms. Honaman and Ms. Belcher bring more artists together in this manner in the future. Well done, well worth the price!
As an off-loom bead weaving artist I am interested in three-dimensional works, no matter the medium. There are wonderful works exhibited here by established polymer clay artists. The colors, shapes and compositions of the pieces serve as wonderful inspiration. The instructions are clear and concise with excellent photos, and there are some wonderful tips that these artists have shared. It is also fascinating to hear the thought process of these master artists before beginning a project -- some take their time and consider all possibilities, while others just dive right in and see what develops. Wonderful book for those interested in polymer or art in any form!
Need more to invest in complete the project it not worth the money, unless your interested weird figures 2 thumbs down

I buy a lot of "how to" craft books, and a lot of books full of inspiring photos. This is one I would NOT have purchased had I been looking at a bookstore instead of online. I wasn't impressed with the inspirational quality or the how-tos. I can see some people really enjoying it for the artist's stories and process, but would suggest you actually look at the book before deciding to buy.
I liked the book but was disappointed that they didn't add more projects and techniques. Wish now I had waited to buy it. The scope of the book and the artist they highlighted was interesting but just didn't hold enough for me I was really hoping to learn more from these artist.
