Gary Chapman's classic 5 Love Languages has been re-written to help parents understand how to best love their children. The 5 Love Languages of Children is a great resource to help identify the differences in my children and the most effect ways to show them love individually. This is a book I plan to re-read as my children grow and develop.I received this book from Moody in exchange for an honest review.
My parents introduced me to The Five Love Languages when I was still a teenager. It was instantly intrigued by the idea of five different ways that people show and receive love. So when the opportunity came up to read The Five Love Languages of Children I was excited to pick it up since I've become a mother. The idea of loving my child in the best ways possible was easily something that I wanted to learn more about.It has been at least ten years since I read The Five Love Languages; however, I didn't find The Five Love Languages of Children to be too terribly different. The love languages (Words of Affirmation, Physical Touch, Quality Time, Acts of Service, and Gifts) are the same. From what I could tell, the examples surrounded the love languages were obviously geared toward parents and children. Also, there were sections devoted to parenting philosophy and the nature of children whereas the original book focused more on the spouse and romantic love relationships. But overall, I feel like you could probably get away with reading one of these books and applying the concepts to both sets of relationships (or any relationship really).That being said, I still really enjoyed The Five Love Languages of Children and I read it quite quickly given the amount of time I have to read these days. Gary Chapman and Ross Campbell had plenty of good and wise things to say about raising children and I highlighted up a storm.Here are some of my favorite quotes:-Speaking your child's primary love language does not mean he or she will not rebel later. It does mean your child will know you love him, and that can bring him security and hope...-Unconditional love is a full love that accepts and affirms a child for who he is, not for what he does.-Your children will sense how you feel about them by how you behave toward them.-Affection and love mean expressing appreciation for the very being of a child, for those characteristics and abilities that are part of the total package of the person. In contrast, we express praise for what the child does, either in achievements or behavior or conscious attitudes.-...much childhood misbehavior is an attempt to get more time with Mom or Dad.-Don't let your demonstration of love to a child be controlled by whether the child is pleasing you at the moment.-Your children need to see in you the traits you want them to develop.-Discipline comes from a Greek word that means "to train." Discipline involves the long and vigilant task of guiding a child from infancy to adulthood. The goal is that the child would reach a level of maturity that will allow him one day to function as a responsible adult in society.-Love looks out for the interest of another; so does discipline.-Practice unconditional love; then discipline.-Raising children always requires more time than you expected.Personally, I really enjoyed the section dedicated to discipline. The authors address that discipline and punishment aren't synonymous. While I without a doubt knew that both of my parents loved me I definitely grew up in a household where punishment was the main form of discipline. It wasn't always about training me in the direction that I needed to go so much as punishing me for the not going the direction I should. Or it felt that way at the time. Anyway, I won't go into all of that here, but I enjoyed the authors spending time on this subject and really enforcing that a child should be loved and feel loved unconditionally no matter how unappealing their behavior might be.The Five Love Languages of Children gets 4 Stars from me. It's an information packed book with easy concepts to implement into your daily life in hopes that your children will feel more loved. I think this book is fascinating! I've noticed that my children, my spouse and I all have a love language that relates to them. The love language is your preferred way of giving & receiving love. What I loved most about this book is the knowledge that when you discipline a child in their love language it cuts really deep. For example, my daughter is a words of affirmation child, and when I correct her actions, she shuts down (even when I do it in the nicest way 'we can't touch that sweetie') My son is a physical touch child, and if I punish him by not letting him sit on my lap, it really hurts his feelings. But if I correct him with words, he doesn't care. It talks a lot about how parents can do everything they want to show their children love, but if they are not showing the child love in the way they prefer it, the child may feel unloved, even to the most attentive parent
This book is great for those of you that already put effort into your relationship with your children. The main bit of knowledge I took away from reading this book is how to make that same amount of effort count for more. If you have already read the original 5 Love Languages book you will know what I mean. Even for those of you who have read it there are some great examples that will help you transfer those ideas from the first book into your relationship with your kids.If you haven't ready the first book that was intended for married couples (or non married couples in a serious relationship) you can still read this book no problem. This was written as a standalone book that does not require the reading of the authors first book.Kids are easy to love, and of course sometimes not so easy but we care for them just the same. It is easy for us to see when they care about us because they are so basic in the way they show affection. As they get older into adolescence this changes a bit as they get more complicated. My children are 4 months, 2 years, and 3.5 years old. Even though this book will be more helpful with children ages 8-18, I am already using the concepts of this book with my 2 and 3.5 year old and seeing results. This book will show you how to let your children know you care about them. My 3.5 year old just needs hugs but my 2 year old needs time spent with him. When I started doing this his typical 2 year old "touch everything I shouldn't" actions went away. It was a moment to cherish when we could leave the remote controls for the TV out on the end table again. When my 2 year old started getting the love he wanted he stopped acting out and this book showed me in an easy to understand way how to see what my child wanted and give it to him. Now did I ignore my child before? No Way. When I get home all the kids go crazy and jump on me and we wrestle and tickle. My 3.5 year old tells me about preschool and my boy shows me his toys (the same ones as the day before). We all eat dinner together followed shortly after by taking baths or showers. Then we have nights with no TV where my wife and I will read them books or they will play and sometimes we let them watch a show or two. Its not like we are bad parents at all and this book isn't aimed at making bad parents better. This book will show you, whatever type of parent you are, how to show your children you care for them so they see it. When your children feel more loved by you they will be more confident, act out less, and be able to show you better how they care for you. Its a win win with no real extra effort needed other than what you are currently putting out. You just might need to redirect some of your effort. This book is a short easy read and I recommend it to any parent.

I will start by saying I have Bipolar Disorder, and have struggled with it for many years. I've had some time off recently, so I wanted to really investigate the science behind my disorder. I started with two books on mental health policy over the past 50 years ( "American Psychosis" for a negative take, and "Better but Not Well" for a more positive, mainstream take), then I read the latest psychiatric information about the disorder- the suspected genetic causes , the brain chemistry approach, the neurological evidence from the official peer-reviewed literature. I altogether found it unsatisfying. Everywhere I turned, it was always "While the specific mechanism is unknown, it is believed..." or "While specific genes cannot be found, it does seem to run in families..." Even the neurological explanation didn't seem able to distinguish cause from effect, or come up with any predictive mechanism. I began to really question the mainstream, so I read "Anatomy of an Epidemic", which was an excellent summary of all the research showing that the brain-chemistry model is ineffective. I even investigated my own medication, and found that Lamictal, the primary drug of choice for bipolar treatment, was found to be ineffective in 7 out of 9 clinical trials ( Of course GSK only published the positive two).All Thomas Szasz really says here is that we can't view mental illness, that is to say, the major mood disorders and psychoses, as normal diseases. We can't pretend that mental illness is some exogenous force that is totally irrelevant of the victim's life experiences, the victims traumas and tragedies, and the victim's behaviors. In fact, new research into the pscychosocial explanation finds very strong evidence for the importance of these things in predicting the incidence of mental illness. And if its true, as Szasz argues, that there is this very strong psychosocial element, then therapy to understand these issues and perceptions and to allow the patient to change behavior is the best option for treatment. Again, research shows the efficacy of Psychotherapy in general as well as CBT specifically.Finally, I can say he is 100% correct in his assertion that much of psychiatry is inhumane. Involuntary treatment, and even the attitude that certain ways of life are "right" and other ways "bad," are means of controlling people. They are a way for society to get rid of undesirables and call it compassion, and on the other side, an escape valve for the oppressed. A key piece of evidence for this is that "homosexuality" was a mental illness for a long time, something we would scoff at now; that was a means of social control, not a means of helping the patient. Healing can only occur in an atmosphere of respect and dignity, where the doctor respects the patient's rights and autonomy, and where the patient takes responsibility.The book is quite plodding at points, but if you skip his abstract explanations and jump straight to the examples he gives, it is very clear. While I'm not convinced that all mental illness is purely a construction, I think Szasz hits the nail on the head for the general direction Psychiatry has moved.
As a retired health care professional, I wish that I had read this book a long, long time ago. It should be standard reading in all health care professional training, and especially in any field related to mental health. Unfortunately, the mainstream powers that be will not allow that. I recommend that you buy this book in paper and give it to any health care professional you deal with. The life and mental health you save may be your own.
Dr. Szasz presages a number of authors who wrestle with the various issues facing postmodern American society, especially those concerning how the dilution of meaning--that is, what constitutes truth in an objective sense--has impacted society in general. He also discusses how the misuse of broad definitions viz. mental illness have had the unintended consequence of misrepresenting and confusing bona fide clinical illnesses from those that are actually matters of moral and ethical judgment and choice. From Dr. Szasz's perspective, the postmodern attitude that "anything goes" is a chimera, an illusion. Postmodernism as a mindset has served to fragment society into factions with the conflict between individualism and collectivism taking front stage. I would recommend reading this book along with Kurt Andersen's book Fantasyland: How America Went Haywire (2017) to grasp the social identity crisis that is afflicting America in the present era, and that have been part of the American psyche since the Pilgrims...
A renaissance man for sure. I learned a great deal from this book and other books by him. He also inspired me to write my own book " The Loss of Grace in an Asylum," which is an authentic account of the oppressive criminal nature of psychiatry at Marlboro Psychiatric Hospital in New Jersey.
Szasz once said that he is the only doctor in his field who hands were clean, because he never medicated any of his patients. Very illuminating read, this is one of those books that will change your way of looking at the largely pseudo-scientific field of psychiatry. A worldview changer of a read!

This book it a must read for anyone interested in leaning more about the epistemological nature of psychology and about the recent invention of the mental health field.

I should have read the other reviews. Luckily, you are reading this... so move along.This is NOT "The Secret Garden". It is "A CONSIDERABLY ABRIDGED Cliff's Notes style childrens re-enactment of The Secret Garden". Nowhere in the description did it say that this was not the real book. It's like half an inch think written in 25 pt. font. My 10 year old daughter read it in less than an hour. Her last book.... Little Women. The real one. 800 pages. I promised her she would like this. Instead she just looked at me like..."really?". And I don't blame her. Seller should update the description.Sorry, but anyone else leaving a higher rating may simply not realize that they received a fraud.PROS: Very pretty cover. Hardback.CONS: See everything I wrote above.
People are naturally inclined to hand out the "instant classic" award to the books they like, but there are only a precious few books that can hold on to such a title for over a hundred years, (this was published in book form in 1911), and still stay fresh, engaging and appealing. This book is the source and template for so many children's lit conventions that it is hard to imagine a library without multiple copies.You can sample the book as a Kindle freebie or in some other downloadable form, since it's out of copyright and readily available. Then, and better yet, after you read it and discover its pleasures, look for a nice edition to give to each young reader you know. There are easy to read books that are shallow, and there are harder to read books with considerable depth, but this one manages to be accessible to a fairly young reader and yet still loaded with fine writing, style, character, mystery, romance, adventure and inspiration. An excellent choice.And while you're at it, take a look at Burnett's "Little Lord Fauntleroy". He's gotten a bad rap, (probably as a result of those Fauntleroy suits and haircuts that were the rage in the twenties), but he's actually smart , level headed, and shrewdly decent in unexpected ways. So go and get your Burnett on.
I am not really sure how I missed out on this book as a child so I decided to read it with my daughter. We thoroughly enjoyed the experience and zipped through it in just a few days. Frances Hodgson Burnett shares some amazing insights into human nature with the reader. My daughter exclaimed at one point, “How can Mary see that Colin is spoiled but not see that she was the same at first too?†Led to some great discussions for sure! I also thought it was amazing that Burnett at times switches between different third person limited perspectives and we even have some of the events in the garden narrated from the point of view of the robin! Such clever writing!Some reviewers complained about the fact that many of the characters speak with a Yorkshire accent and Frances Hodgson Burnett wrote it phonetically the way the characters pronounced the words. I thought it added to the fun! I tried to speak with the broad Yorkshire accent as I read it out loud and changed my voice for the different characters. My daughter and I both loved it. The Yorkshire dialect was interesting and we have been trying to throw some of the words we learned into conversation such as “wick†meaning alive or lively. From my point of view, that beats trying to throw something modern like “on fleek†into conversation!
I really enjoyed this book. The characters were very well developed. The story was interesting, it was difficult to put down the book. The writing style, the description of events... you name it.. everything is just perfect. Thus it deserves a 5 star rating.This was my first ever kindle in motion ebook and it was good enough not know what exactly to expect. Say 10-15 pictures with motion in a book with around 21 chapters and over 250 pages. There were very few pages with illustration in motion (not many) and others with sketches of flowers. There were branches on all corners of each page and i loved that as the story proceeds, those blanches are full of leaves and flowers.I enjoyed reading this book and I hope you do too. I never read this as a child, and I think I'm glad. Reading it now, as an over-60, garden-loving mom with lots of life experience, I think I appreciate it a lot more, although I would have loved the mystery as a kid. Now I can appreciate the serious racism, the sad child(ren) neglect, the rather pagan awakening to nature (clothed as "Magic"), and the joyous, if obvious, ending. I believe the writing was very good for its time, and had no problem with the Yorkshire dialect. Mary and Colin and Dickon all struck me as very believable characters, and the changes wrought in Mary and Colin were overall pretty credible, although they happened a bit too quickly. I had more of a problem with Archibald's rejection of his son for ten whole years. Dwelt just a bit much on the beauty and changeableness of the moors. Well worth reading.

If you don’t want to know what happens, then you better not read this review. I probably would’ve given this book 5 stars, if it wasn’t for one very tragic event. Early in this book Ryan, one of the 4 original characters dies. I had always figured that one or two or even three of these characters would die at some point. But it should not have been him, especially at this stage, still relatively early in the series. He was the youngest character, and really my favorite one. I had always liked it how he had gone from being a little coward to a good strong character with a desire to serve. When he dies, it hit me so hard, I could hardly bear it. Never before in my life had a fictional story ever been so emotionally painful. This put a real scar on the series for me, and nearly ruined it. It was probably a few weeks before I was able to start reading it again.Aside from this unacceptable tragedy, most of the book is quite good. I think “Escape†would’ve been a more accurate title, because that’s what they’re usually doing. Some parts almost go on for a little too long, but it’s quite exciting.I find it interesting how the “Left Behind Kids†series often covers the various plagues of the tribulation even better than the main series does. In this book, the 2nd and 3rd Trumpet judgments (the objects falling from space) are covered quite well. In the main Left Behind series (the adult series), these events are basically just mentioned, whereas in this series they have characters who actually experience them. This makes it significantly more exciting and interesting.
Im am reading this series for the second time and I love them! The first time through though I compared the bible verses to what said in the book to make sure the authors weren't just making stuff up. These books are very incitefull as to what is coming when Jesus raptures his church. Very scary stuff. This series is a must read for everyone Christian and nonchristian alike.
Love these books. I read the adult ones for the second time last year & loved them so much I thought I’d read the kids. I like how the authors link them together using the same characters, but from the kids point of view. Awesome Biblical knowledge!

And I’ll give you a thousand dollars.”“What do I do?”“There’s a girl up there, and her name is Nana Maduro. She owns a ranch on Cherry Creek. Wetterling wants the girl, and he wants the ranch. So I had a drink there, and another, and looked around the room, and it all looked familiar. For there had been a time—“I’m looking for a ranch,” I said, “on Cherry Creek. It’s owned by Nana Maduro.”The bartender’s face changed before my eyes and he mopped the bar. “See Wetterling,” he said. “He hires for them.”“I’ll see the owner,” I said, and put down my glass.A girl was coming up the street, walking fast. She had flame-red hair and brown eyes. When she saw Big Red she stopped dead still. And I stood under the awning and rolled a cigarette and watched her, and knew what she was feeling.She looked around at the men. “I want to buy that horse,” she said. “Who owns him?”A man jerked a thumb at me, and she looked at me and took a step closer. I saw her lips part a little and her eyes widen.She was all woman, that one, and she had it where it showed. And she wore her sex like a badge, a flaunting and a challenge—the way I liked it.“You own this horse?”One step took me out of the shade and into the sun, a cigarette in my lips. I’m a swarthy man, and her skin was golden and smooth, despite the desert sun.“Hello, Lou,” she said. “Hello, Lou Morgan.”“This is a long way from Mazatlán,” I said. “You were lovely then, too.”“You were on the island,” she said, “a prisoner. I thought you were still there.”“I was remembering you, and no walls could hold me,” I said, smiling a little, “so I found a way out and away. The prison will recover in time.”“How did you know I was here?”“I didn’t,” I said. “Remember? I killed a man for you and you left me, with never a word or a line. You left me like dirt in the street.”And when that was said I walked by her and stepped into the saddle. I looked down at her and said, “You haven’t changed. Under that fine-lady manner you’re still a tramp.”A big young man who stood on the walk, filled with the pride of his youth, thought he should speak. So I jumped the stallion toward him, and when we swept abreast I grabbed him by his shirtfront.I swung him from his feet and muscled him up, half strangling, and held him there at eye level, my arm bent to hold him, my knuckles under his chin.“That was a private conversation,” I said. “The lady and I understand each other.”Then I slapped him, booming slaps that left his face white and the mark of my hand there, and I let him drop. My horse walked away and took a trail out of town.But those slaps had been good for my soul, venting some of the fury I was feeling for her! Not the fury of anger, although there was that, too, but the fury of man-feeling rising within me, the great physical need I had for that woman that stirred me and gripped me and made my jaws clench and my teeth grind.Nana Maduro! And that thin-faced man in the cantina hiring me to come and get you away from this—what was his name?—Wetterling!Nana Maduro, who was Irish and Spanish and whom I had loved and wanted when I was seventeen, and for whom I had killed a man and been sentenced to hang. Only the man I killed had been a dangerous man, a powerful man in Mexico, and feared, and not all were sorry that he had died. These had helped me, had got my sentence commuted to life imprisonment, and after two years I broke out and fled to the hills, and after two more years word had come that the records had been lost and that I was a free man.At fifteen Nana Maduro had been a woman in body and feeling, but untried yet and restless because of it.And at seventeen I had been raw and powerful, a seasoned Indian fighter knowing mining, hunting, and riding, but a boy in emotion and temper.It was different now that seven years had passed. Nana now was full-flowered and gorgeous. But they had been seven hard, lean years for me, a man who rode with a gun and rode alone, a man who fought for pay, with a gun for hire.Three days I rode the hills and saw no man, but looked upon the country through eyes and field glasses. And I saw much, and understood much.Cherry Creek range was dream range, knee-deep to a tall steer with waving grass and flowers of the prairie. Even on the more barren stretches there were miles of antelope bush and sheep fat, the dry-looking desert plants rich in food for cattle. There was water there, so the cattle need walk but little and could keep their flesh, and there was shade from the midday sun.And this belonged to Nana Maduro, to Nana, whom I’d loved as a boy, and desired as a man. And did I love as a man? Who could say?She had cattle by the thousand on her rolling hills, and a ranch house like none I had ever seen, low and lovely and shaded, a place for a man to live. And a brand, N M, and a neighbor named Wetterling.The Wetterling ranch was north and west of hers, but fenced by a range of hills, high-ridged and not to be crossed by cattle, and beyond the ridge the grass was sparse and there were few trees. A good ranch as such ranches go, but not the rolling, grass-waving beauty of Cherry Creek.Then I saw them together. He was a huge man, bigger than I was, blond and mighty. At least two inches taller than I, and heavier, but solid. He moved light on his feet and quickly, and he could handle a horse.Other things I saw. Nana was without friends. She was hemmed in by this man, surrounded by him. People avoided her through fear of him, until she was trapped, isolated. It could be a plan to win her finally, or to take her ranch if the winning failed.But they laughed together and raced together, and they rode upon the hills together. And on the night of the dance in Battle Basin, they came to it together.For that night I was shaved clean and dusted, my boots were polished, and though I went to the dance and looked at the girls, there was only one woman in that room for me.She stood there with her big man, and I started toward her across the floor, my big California spurs jingling. I saw her face go white to the lips and saw her start to speak, and then I walked by her and asked the daughter of a rancher named Greenway for a dance.As the Greenway girl and I turned away in the waltz I saw Nana’s face again, flaming red, then white, her fine eyes blazing. So I danced with Ann Greenway, and I danced with Rosa McQueen, and I danced with the girls of the village and from the ranches, but I did not dance with Nana Maduro.CHAPTER IINana watched me. That I saw. She was angry, too, and that I had expected, for when does the hunter like for the deer to escape? Especially the wounded deer?Two men came in when the evening was half gone, one of them a thin man with a sickly face and a head from which half the hair was gone, and in its place a scar. This was Clevenger. His partner Mack was stocky and bowlegged and red of face.Both wore their guns tied down, and both were dangerous. They were known along the border for the men they had killed. They were feared men who had not acquired their reputations without reason.They were there when I stopped not far away from where Wetterling was talking to Nana. I saw Wetterling move toward her as if to take her for a dance, and I moved quickly, saying, “Will you dance?” and wheeled her away as I spoke.Wetterling’s face was dark and ugly, and I saw the eyes of his two killers upon me, but I held Nana close, and good she felt in my arms. And she looked up at me, her lips red and soft and wet, and her eyes blazing.“Let me go, you fool! They’ll kill you for this!”“Will they now?” I smiled at her, but my heart was pounding and my lips were dry, and my being was filled with the need of her. “You’ll remember that was tried once, long ago.”Then I held her closer, her breasts tight against me, my arm about her slim waist, our bodies moving in the dance.“To die for this,” I said, “would not be to die in vain.”It was my mother’s family that spoke, I think, for poetic as the Welsh may be, and my father was Welsh, it is the Spanish who speak of dying for love, though they are never so impractical. My mother’s name was Ibañez.When the dance was finished, Nana pulled away from me. “Leave me here,” she said, and then when I took her arm to return her to Wetterling, she begged, “Please, Lou!”My ears were deaf. So I took her to him and stopped before him, and, with his two trained dogs close by, I said, “She dances beautifully, my friend, and better with me than with you—and what are you trying to do with that fresh-cut trail through the woods? Get your cattle onto her grass?”Then I turned my back and walked away and the devil within me feeling the glory of having stirred the man to fury, wanting that, yet desolate to be leaving her. For now I knew I loved Nana Maduro. Not prison nor time nor years nor her coldness had killed it. I still loved her.At the door as I left, a red-faced man with bowed legs who stood there said, “You’ve a fine horse and it’s a nice night to ride. Cross the Territory line before you stop.”“See you tomorrow,” I said.“Have a gun in your hand, if you do,” he said to me, and went back inside. Mack, a brave man.In the morning I rode the hills again, doing a sight of thinking. Wetterling wanted both the ranch and the girl, and no doubt one as much as the other. Another man wanted the place, too, and maybe the girl. But why that particular ranch?Lovely, yes. Rich with grass, yes. But considering the obstacles and the expense—why? Hatred? It could be. A man can hate enough. But my employer was not a hating man, to my thinking. He just knew what he wanted, and how to get it.Small ranchers and riders with whom I talked could give me no clue. I did not ask outright if they knew my employer, but I could tell they must know the man.The trail I had found through the woods was guarded now. Two men loafed near the N M side of it, both with rifles across their knees. Through my glasses I studied that trail. It was wide, and it was well cut. When I got into my saddle I saw something else—a gleam of sunlight reflecting on a distant mountainside. Distant, but still on Maduro range.

Great short stories with realistic action by fist and 6 gun done against an accurately painted western geography. Note L'Mour was, among many things a pro boxer. He was an excellent western historian. My Dad was a working cowboy, top pistol shot (as am I ) and career Army officer of an old Texas pioneer family. Much of the events were likely occurring over many years across the west, and echo our family lore.
No one can write a novel about any subject than Louis L'Amour. I've read his book all my teen and adult life and every one is excellent. If you have any regard for the Old West, L'Amour is you guy. Vivid description of the conditions within the book will make the book come to life. Never enjoyed a book or series of book than these Collected Short Stories of Louis L'amour.
I have always enjoyed Louis L'Amour writings. Except for rare occasions, you don't have to worry about bad language. In our negative "news" world, I enjoy taking a break and reading about good overcoming evil.
A good variety of stories. Some i have read before which I liked reading again the others a different version which were exciting.
L'AMOUR IS ALWAYS A GREAT READ. THE MULTIPLE SHORT STORY FORMAT IS APPRECIATED AND THE CHARACTER DESCRIPTIONS ARE GREAT. IF YOU LIKE WESTERNS YOU WILL BE VERY PLEASED WITH THIS COLLECTION
Read almost every one of the stories in other L'Amour books. I have way overpaid. Last "collection" that I'll buy.

I've read several of these stories and they're great. I'm not sure I can agree with the reviewer who said the stories are not by L'Amour. As I look at the index, I note numerous stories which have appeared in previously published versions, such as the "Ghost Maker" and the "Cactus Kid" stories. So if these are not authentic L'Amour then they weren't years ago either when they appeared under his byline. In any case, these are a great read!
