I so wish I'd thought to look for this before I began my first bust. It would have saved me a whole lot of time, and increased the chance that the finished piece will dry evenly enough to remain free of cracks before it goes into the kiln. Fingers crossed! Because I tend towards realism (and being a born perfectionist) it took a lot of time to work and re-work the face until it became real enough, and with the subtle smile that I was hoping to achieve.This book has excellent photos of not only the work in clay but also of models who offer a good range of expressions for every mood. It's also full of inspiring pieces from a range of different artists.The techniques are clearly laid out, step by step, and shown in good detail.The only thing that could have improved this for me would be to see some details of neck and shoulders. My figure is of a woman with her eyes half closed, face tilted upwards and slightly to the side. As is almost always the case, the neck and shoulders are the base of a bust, and I was hoping to see some examples of protrusions of the spinal cord, and the scapulas to help to perfect my piece. It's very hard to find photos that help with something like this.Overall though, I highly recommend this book. Love it!
Very detailed book demonstrating different methods (slab, coil, and solid) for completing a human bust in clay. Includes many examples to convey various ages, emotions, and expressions of the human face. Gives instruction for proper placement and proportions of ears, eyes, nose, etc. Confident that this book provides a very good foundation to begin sculpting well developed heads and expressive faces in clay.

This book is a waste of money, it’s weak and has mediocre information at best, i give it three stars because I feel generous. I should have returned it, tho. And you shouldn’t buy it. There are MUCH better books on the subject. Faraut’s books are more expensive but you will actually learn the real knowledge. Your money will be well spent. This book is a false economy because you spend less money and get virtually nothing for it.
This is a very simplified way to show how to sculpt, it's what I needed and not overly worded. Gets to the point.
I don't know. The designs in this book were a bit creepy and weird for me. Maybe someone else will like it better. I have other books that I'm happy with.
I think this book is excellent and provides clear, detailed instructions for slab building a head and face to create a unique, expressive work. It addresses form, anatomy, solid basic construction methods and surface treatments. Many of the modeling techniques overlap to building on an armature, but this book addresses only the slab construction method, which I think is much more accessible for beginners. Could a beginner take this book and work with it without a teacher? In many cases, I think so, especially if you have a background in art and/or learn well from books. Some experience handling clay would be helpful, and if you don't want to dive in without a teacher, a basic hand building course should prepare you for the projects in this book. This book is so well done! Highest praise to the author.
This is a wonderful book! It's very descriptive and easy to understand. There are step by step pictures and they have drawn diagrams of the human head so you can better understand how to sculpt them.

About the Author
AMY WAESCHLE is a freelance writer and photographer whose work has appeared in publications such as Surf Life for Women, the Seattle Times, and the Bellingham Herald, among others. She also works with a close-knit group of writers and editors for the outdoor sportswear company Patagonia. Her short story, "Making a Pie with Grandma," was a finalist for the 2005 Zola Award. Amy has a background in teaching wilderness skills, leading expeditions with adolescents for the National Outdoor Leadership School as well as teaching field courses in wilderness medicine. She has been a research assistant, a middle school science teacher, a very bad waitress, and a ski lift operator. Amy currently lives in Italy with her husband and two dogs. Amy has captured the spirit of adventure, fun, and hard work in this entertaining and easy to read book. I'm not a surfer, but her exploration and persistence in pursuing surfing mirrors any woman's journey to mastering any difficult and challenging sport. I enjoyed reading about her struggles with learning from her partner, finding the time to catch some waves while raising a family, and her descriptions of her traveling adventures. Nice work, Amy!
Quick and interesting read about a couple who travel and surf.
You don't have to be a surfer to enjoy this book! It's not only a delightful journey of wanderlust, but also the story of a woman's, and a family's, odyssey through the lens of the author's passion--surfing. The author has a knack for the descriptive turn of phrase and manages to make each encounter with a wave original, as when she describes her early attempts to keep hold of her board as "trying to commandeer a huge, slippery trout."I am not a surfer; in fact, deep water scares me, but reading Chasing Waves made me want to run out and buy a surfboard, a sketchy, old van, and hit the road.
Thank-you Amy for writing about your love of riding waves and being in the ocean. I grew up surfing and have since drifted, but it occupies my thoughts frequently. I am inspired and loved the recounting of your surf journey.
Amy tells it like it is from a female surfer's point of view. Her writing is wonderful, funny & takes us into the waves of a surfing adventure. From Fiji to Mexico, we surf along with her while she develops relationslips with the locals, friends and her future husband.
Chasing Waves illustrates experiences that are common to all surfers. I found it to be an easy read and caught myself smiling during much of the book. I grew up surfing in So Cal and related to all of Amy's experiences regardless of where she was around the globe. A must have for anyone's surf collection.
Who would have known waves could be described in so many new ways? Waeschle paints a beautiful picture as she writes about her experiences from just beginning to surf, to when surfing becomes a huge part of her life. I could hear the roar of salty spray, see the deep blue barrels of swell and feel the sun on my brow as I read. This book is a testament to how mother nature; in particular the Ocean can enhance ones life and enable a person to live their life more fully because of their relationship with the water. Of course the water isn't always peaches n' cream; Waeschle describes the scary moments out there with utmost clarity as well. Waeschle integrates how surfing and her personal relationships become braided as one, an inspiration to anyone who intends to keep doing what they do in the outdoors as they start a family. This book is enjoyable for those who have been surfing all their lives or those who have never surfed before. I have never surfed but it is written so that anyone can understand the wave terminology.
I came across this book by accident. It was very well written and she describes the wave action beautifully. I've been to Costa Rica several times she describes the area as I remember it. This book is an excellent read.

Although, just as was Dick Haskin, I was enthralled by Jane Goodall and Dian Fossey regarding the work with primates, my life’s ambition was oriented more towards getting inside the heads of humans, just as the great explorer, John Goddard. Perhaps my conditioning was a reflection of my age, or, probably, because Goddard was a frequent lecturer at my high school in Southeast Los Angeles County.At any rate, I selected as my Amazon First Read the book “Zoo Nebraska†by Carson Vaughan with reluctance and trepidation. It, as well as most of this month’s choices, sounded a bit dreary and depressing. As a resident of the Midwest, I witness every day much of that depicted in this study of rural America. I see, all too frequently, the seemingly perpetual decline of what it means to be living in a region in which ‘newcomers’ include even the folks who moved into the town 20 years ago.However, I was a bit intrigued by the thought of someone starting a zoo. So, I took the chance. What follows below is my honest opinion of the writing and conclusions arrived at by the author. In other words, what did I enjoy or find interesting, and what I enjoyed less about “Zoo Nebraska.â€BLUSH FACTOR: After I finished reading, I did a search for eff words and found two. I state it this way, because they were included in a way that I easily forgot they were even in the book. They got in the book in honest reporting of what the person said, rather than for artistic purposes. The first is on page 180, the second on page 188, so, if you prefer to skip over them, you can. By no means would I suggest not buying the book due to the language, but that is your choice.POV: Third person point of view.WRITING & EDITING: The book starts a little slowly and with a little jumping around. Yet, without giving us so full a history of the town and its early mishaps and name-changing, the overall story arc might not have felt sufficiently rewarding. By about 20 percent into the book, I found it a real challenge to set the book aside. Perhaps, though, the first forty pages could have been condensed to, say, 20 or 25, to make for a quicker introduction to the more juicy bits. I think what I’m saying is that if you base your purchase decision on reading only the 10 percent sample, you’ll probably not find much of interest. However, I just want to state that the overall reading experience is much more interesting.EXCERPT:‘…He inched toward the ledge, found Jimmy Joe behind the wheel.“He’s inside here!†he called to Arvin below.“He’s inside the van?â€Jimmy Joe began to jump and thrash, rocking the van, screaming and tearing up the upholstery, smearing his blood across the dash, as if he just now realized he was trapped inside.“It was like Planet of the Apes,†Detlefsen says. “Every time I see that movie, I’m looking around because the scream in that movie is the same one [that came] out of that van.â€Duaine reparked his truck parallel to the blocks, creating a makeshift barricade. The school, post office, library, and Methodist church have closed their doors as the population declined. Young folks leave for more opportunities. The only ones left are those who are too old, too sick, or too odd to live elsewhere.Everyone loves the idea of living in a small town, but few people understand the realities of living in a place where you have little choice of friends and no privacy at all. Resentments fester and feuds are common. As one local says, "Royal has always had a 'Hatfields and McCoys' reputation." And yet the people of Royal love their town and for a few years they had something that set them apart from their neighbors. They had an accredited zoo.Dick Haskin was a serious, studious boy who wanted to get out of Royal. From the age of 12, he was fascinated by the study of primates in the wild. He planned to use his degree in life sciences from the University of Nebraska as a springboard to a career as a primatologist. A $55,000 contribution from Nebraska native-son Johnny Carson was both a financial windfall and a public relations prize. The tiny educational center operated on a shoestring, but was popular with locals and attracted attention from other parts of the state. But animal centers must meet strict federal and state standards to earn and keep a license. The strain of running a poorly-financed operation broke down Dick Haskin's health and he was forced to resign as director.A Canadian couple with experience in zoo management took over and acquired three more chimps and other animals, doubling the number of animals on display. But they didn't know that the zoo was deeply in debt and had received warnings from government agencies about the conditions in which the animals lived. When they criticized Dick Haskin's management, the board of directors indignantly fired them. Royal was NOT putting up with know-it-all outsiders!From then on, the zoo was run by untrained volunteers. Conditions (both financial and physical) deteriorated. On September 10, 2005, a volunteer failed to close a gate while the chimp enclosure was being cleaned and the four chimpanzees (all male) escaped. Two stayed on the zoo grounds, but two wandered into town.Chimpanzees are extremely powerful and can be very aggressive. As one expert said, "If one chimp escapes, someone will be hurt. If two chimps escape, someone will be killed." There has never been an incident int he U.S. where four chimps escaped at the same time, with some of them leaving the zoo grounds. While the rest of the country was watching the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, this tiny town was having its own horrific emergency and no one there was trained for it.The chapter that covers the escape of the four chimpanzees is hard to read. I was left weak-knee and very emotional. Many people savagely criticized the handling of the emergency, but the fact that there were no human casualties is a miracle. These untrained civilians dealt with the danger as best they could, with no time to think before they acted. It's easy to be wise after the fact. Everyone involved was scarred by the tragedy, but they moved on. What else can you do?What happened in Royal sounds like a horror movie, but the plain fact is that the keeping of "exotic" animals, including very dangerous ones by private individuals and in unlicensed road-side zoos without trained staff is more common than we want to believe. The tragedy in Royal could easily be repeated in many communities across America.This is an incredible book; investigative reporting at its very best. The author shows a real feel for the people in this tiny town. He presents their lives and opinions honestly, without ever being condescending or cruel. I'll be thinking about this book for a long time.

In the interest of full disclosure, I have to reveal that I know both authors. I list Elliot among my friends and Curtis as an acquaintance of high esteem . I met them both in 2003 at the Toronto Wodehouse Convention. Elliott was the organizer of that convention and Curtis was a speaker. I have heard Elliott speak at several conventions and Curtis at two. Their talks are great fun and informative. Since many of the essays in this book began with convention talks, you will get a taste of their contributions to conventions from the essays. The essays, themselves, are some of the best I've read on Wodehouse, and as a minor Wodehouse scholar and current President of The Wodehouse Society, I've read quite a few essays. Both authors find that delicate balance between being scholarly and enjoyable. Or perhaps, I should say, they are scholarly and enjoyable. But his book.
A terrific read for Wodehouse fans and those may become fans. I expected critical analysis, but discovered right away this book is much more: as engaging and delightfully written as, dare I say, Wodehouse himself. I've read a number of Wodehouse books and stories, but don't consider myself a dyed-in-the-wool "Wodehousian," yet I found this book stirred a much greater interest in the author and his writing.My only disappointment with the book is it wasn't longer; I hope there is a follow up to "Plum Assignment," as I would like to read more from Armstrong and Milstein.
What a gem of book for anybody who appreciates P. G. Wodehouse! The authors, Curtis Armstrong and Elliott Milstein, are longtime friends and bibliophiles who have presented enjoyable and scholarly papers at conventions of The Wodehouse Society, and have also published in the Society's journal, Plum Lines. Those papers and articles form the bulk of the book, but they are tied together in an entertaining fashion with commentaries from Curtis and Elliott, who reflect not only on Wodehouse but on their abiding friendship.Now, I am a bit prejudiced here because I have written the foreword for this book, but that is just the point: I wouldn't have done so had I not known what gold there is to be mined from it. It is replete with erudition and packed with many laugh-out-loud moments as Curtis and Elliott share humorous memories and provide insight into the world of Wodehouse. A Plum Assignment is a joy to read from start to finish, and then you'll want to start reading it all over again. I couldn't recommend it more highly.

Great book about about a fairytale horse who stole the hearts of America. I'm 70 and can remember Seabiscuit appearing in cartoons we'd watch on Saturday mornings in the 50's. I'd always wonder about those cameos and why they were there. This book explains why: Seabiscuit was a national phenomenon.The book tells the story of the horse and the exceptional team of owner, trainer and jockeys that combined to create that phenomenon. At the same time the details behind and within the 2 minutes of a horse race. The book is totally fascinating and I read it once every few years for both the content and excellent story telling of Hillenbrand. Another favorite by her is "Unbroken" about an exceptional track star in the 1940's.
I have read and reread Seabiscuit at least 3 or 4 times. To me, it's a classic! The author develops the characters thoroughly, including Seabiscuit. The owner, trainer, and jockey were incredible people. They were all very sensitive to each other's knowledge and expertise when it came to Seabiscuit. There were numerous times throughout the book when the author was describing a race...I found may heart pounding as if I was actually watching a real horse race. Seabiscuit was an amazing animal. He was intelligent, sensitive, and cunning. Even though he was not the most beautiful horse, he loved competition. He truly is "an American legend." Please read this book...it's a feel good story, and will bring a tear to your eye.
A wonderful piece of writing. Laura Hillenbrand has a talent for gathering material from diverse sources and weaving it into a story that's readable, believable, and lovable. It's good literature and at the same time, good history. I just wish she would take on the story of Goldsmith Maid, a racemare who was literally hell on wheels, conquering both stud horses and other mares on her way to new world records. Compared to Seabisquit, there's a paucity of first hand resources here cause the mare is all but forgotten, but Laura might appreciate the challenge.Oh well. Anyone interested in depression era horse racing or simply interested in a good story won't be disappointed in "Seabisquit". This lady can write. Both the book and the movie are worth the hype.
I reread this book after my initial read several years ago, and it was just as enjoyable as my first. Ms. Hillenbrand's extremely well-researched story puts you right in the saddle alongside Seabiscuit jockeys Red Pollard and George Woolf. My Uncle Nori owned several thoroughbred race horses - most of them Claimers - and told me something that I had always taken as a trainer's unfounded superstition when he said, "...you can tell if a horse is ready to run by feeling his ankles." We were in a stable at Caliente Race Track at the time, and I was just 10 years old. Uncle Nori knelt beside his horse, Toro Tuck, and wrapped his hands around the horses lower leg. "Cold as ice," he smiled back at me. "He's ready to go today." I recall being up in the grandstands watching the finish of the race - and hearing my uncle yell his lungs out, "Look at him go! Look at him go!" When the results were posted, and Toro Tuck was declared the winner, I turned to my uncle and asked him if he had put any money on his horse. He smiled down at me and fanned about a half-dozen $100 Win tickets at me. Hillenbrand's book brought all these vivid memories rushing back to me, and verified the truth behind my uncle's insight into a thoroughbred's race readiness.
This was absolutely fantastic!While written in the same manner as Unbroken....this book just drew me in!I absolutely loved learning about the ins and outs of horse racingThe story of Seabiscuit and Red Pollard is nothing short of awe inspiring.It's a fabulous read.....don't let the historical aspect turn you off from it.Loved it. Incredible book. Laura Hillenbrand did the deep research not only on Seabiscuit, but the evolution of hors racing in the U.S. Then she wrote a compelling narrative about Seabiscuit and the people who owned, trained and rode him. Jockey Johnny "Red" Pollard, trainer Tom Smith and owner Charles Howard come to life in the book. Hillenbrand is a master of conveying their personal successes and failures with understanding and sensitivity. And the insights into professional horse racing were spellbinding. Great read. Can't wait for Hillenbrand's next work.
This is am amazing book about an amazing horse and the humans who had faith in his greatness. The mater-of-fact description of the lengths to which jockeys went to make weight, the mortal danger they faced each time they rode and the abuse heaped upon them by owners and tracks was chilling. The descriptions of the races were thrilling and made me feel like I was there on the rail myself. This is a page turner with a heart as bid as its subject.
First, I am grateful for Ms Hillenbrand's second book, Unbroken (an excellent book by itself). Otherwise I would not have discovered Seabiscuit. I read the book, Secretariat, by William Nack, but did not give much thought to reading Seabiscuit. I was so impressed with Laura Hillenbrand's story-telling ability, however, that I knew I had to read it. Second, the story's underlying theme is as relevant today as it was in the 1930s and 1940s: then, as now, our country needed something or someone to cheer for; a positive story, or a role model, to unify and uplift its people. And the human and equine qualities that defined the story's characters, such as the will to persevere against all odds, are timeless and are meticulously presented. And what more can I possibly say about Seabiscuit? Unlike Secretariat, a thoroughbred in every official sense, Seabiscuit lacked the conformation that thoroughbred horses usually possess. But what he lacked in structure, he possessed in spirit, courage and the unbounded ability to run. So, we can learn a lot from this horse, and this beautifully written story, if we pay attention. I highly recommend this book; you will marvel, shake your head in disbelief and you will cry, if you're inclined to do so.

OK bug book. If you have a casual interest in bugs and want a book about Texas bugs for your coffee table, this would be great. If you're looking for an extensive categorized listing of bugs in Texas you'll be a bit disappointing though.There were a number of common insects missing from the listing, and all insects (from bees to flies to wasps to scorpions) are listed in one section alphabetically, forcing you to flip through the entirety of the book looking at every photo to try to identify one insect. Also, some listings were very generalized (i.e., scorpion is a listing. There are a ton of different types of scorpions out there, yet according to this book there are only "scorpions")
A great book, sprinkled throughout with helpful personal anecdotes by each of the authors and written with a touch of down-to-earth humor. It goes beyond the identification of "bugs" to control of harmful critters through practical biologic methods.Highly recommended!Although written specifically with Texas gardens in mind, this would no doubt be helpful for other regions not too far removed.(Confession: I read all the personal anecdotes first. They are extremely helpful and good teasers for the rest of the book. :) )
Its really hard to get me to invest $30.00 in a book, when I do, its because I consider that book to be something extra-special. I spent months at the book store, reading little bits of this book and comparing it to other books on the subject. Finally I decided I couldn't live without this one and I bought it, and I am so glad I did.One of my original objections to the book was the seemingly average (at best) photos and the alphabetical organization of topics (as opposed to a system that organized listings by scientific class, i.e. all beetles listed together, all wasps listed together etc. etc..). I quickly overcame those objections as I used this friendly, sensible, book to help me identify insects in my Texas garden. Alphabetized listings are probably easier for many people, most of whom might not know the difference between a true bug and a beetle. I found the photos are adequate for identification purposes in most cases. What makes this Bug Book stand out in my opinion, are the author's personal stories included in the text. These recount experiences with and observations of many of the insects in the book, based on years of ranching, farming, and gardening in Texas. This is something you wont get in your standard field guide. The value of a lifetime of observations is priceless, especially when used to support the author's belief in natural pest control wherever possible. The other thing you wont get in a standard field guide are the recipes and resources for the more organic forms of pest control.All in all an excellent, easy to use, informative guide.
This is my go to bug book for central Texas. My landscape design customers rely on me to correctly diagnose and treat their pest problems. Thus book is a great reference to refer to when there is a garden problem. Me and my niece use the book to look up that strange bug we saw in the garden. Very informative, good basic info on common pests.
The contents of the book are fine, but the book itself is huge. It measures 8-1/2" x 11" x 5/8". I bought it because I thought it was something I could put in my pack. Search for a field guide if adding it to your pack is your intended purpose and inquire about the size of the book before purchase.
I have finally found a book that gives great information on "Bugs". My grandson found it interesting as well, for some reason the pictures and the write up were simple enough that he could understand. He is 8 years old. This book was bought because I am going to Horicultral classes and we have a speaker on Insects, and I found it very useful, and will be taking it to class to show my teacher. If she likes it she will recommend it to her students, in each class she teaches. I have some of these nasty critters, and some nice critters in my garden and it was great to have a book handy to check on whether or not they were the good guys or the bad guys. As my teacher has said Pesticide is Homocide, don't you agree.
I encouter bugs on a fairly regular basis. I have learned alot in the short while I've had it. I purchased it in conjunction with the Texas Organic Gardening book by the same author. The other book goes fairly quickly over the main bugs, but this one has better pictures from which to identify the critters, and has much more information about the benefits and damages the bugs can do. The only things I feel are missing are the average lifespan, if the critter survives freezing conditions, and a section specific to the critters that are poisonous or dangerous to humans. Money well spent in my opinion.

The anecdotes by the authors give their own experiences and suggestions for environmentally sound ways to keep your gardens free from harmful pests and encourage the beneficial insects. A must for every Texas gardener.
