At twelve years of age Mayakovsky was displaying the extraordinary behaviour which was to characterise his life.In his teens he wore a yellow jacket and proclaimed himself a Nihilist.When he turned himself into a poet he never altered his extraordinary course through life.When he shot himself at the age of 36 Boris Pasternak went to the house where Mayakovsky lay, looked over him and went into a corner and wept.Akhamatova asked by Isiah Berlin if she considered Mayakovsky a great Poet replied no, but added that he was a genius.The Ferociously intelligent Marina Tsvetaeva took Mayakovsky's side when he visited Paris and the Emigre community of Russians shunned him as a Party hack, which he had indeed become. Tsvetaeva saw more in him than this and took his side.In 1921 she had written a short but insightful poem entitled 'To Mayakovsky'it praised him as "my clumsy footed angel" Apart from his time playing the role of 'Party Hack' Mayakovsky defies categorisation.I bought this book when it was originally published in 1960 and cherish it much as I cherish Hart Crane's 'The Bridge'.In 1930 one year before his death in the poem 'At The Top Of My Voice'Mayakovsky showed clearly that he had begun to revert to his previous unorthodox identity.He said clearly: "Agitprop sticks in my teeth too"Mayakovsky knew what he had become; and in 1931 shot himself through the heart.A remarkable poet who for all of his failings was adored by the Russian people.For me he stands amongst the greatest.A.Murphy.

I do appreciate the publishers attempting to make Mayakovsky available in English and Russian. This book features only 13 poems in and a short play, albeit in both original Russian and translated English, but none the less it's just too few. It's a shame how few of Vladimir Mayakovsky's poems and pieces are currently available in English, but then again it has a large amount to do with the intrinsic nature of the poem's beauty belonging solely in its original Russian format. This book, in my opinion, is simply too big and costs too much for the content, unless you get it used. The poems need footnotes to really be understood in both English and Russian because much of it has no meaning without historical and biographical context, much like a T.S. Eliot can't be understood without the guidance of a professor or a very, very specifically educated mind. The editors try to solve this contextual problem with a biographical and era introduction that unfortunately centers more on the too broad scope of the Russian Revolution and the too narrow times of adulations that Mayakovsky received as he impressed more people throughout his time of his fame. I believe there could be more context if we'd learned about the different life stages of the poet and and his struggles specific to each poem, not just how much attention he garnered. The only other book in English publication about Mayakovsky which is very common, When Night Wraps the Sky, tries to tell too much about Mayakovsky's personal life, almost like a boring timeline of facts with intermittent flashes of his poetry in-between that are accompanied by overpowering and as result, blanching commentary by other writers. To conclude, if you want to read Mayakovsky, learn Russian, but if you only know English then this book is your best choice.
Mayakovsky was one of the foremost futurist poets of the early 20th centuary. He wrote anguished (and mildly egocentric) pieces about being alone and unrequited in love. He also wrote political poems that were supposed to moblize the workers and shock the borgeosie establishment. This book is worth buying for the two epics "A cloud in trousers" and "The backbone flute" alone. The other poems are the icing on the cake, sounding off his thundering poetic voice. His final poem, "Past one o'clock.." starkly contrasts the others with it's muted depression. He would include part of it in his suicide note, changing the line "now you and I are quits" to "now life and I are quits." The Bedbug is a savage satire of Soviet society, and (had he not shot himself) would probably have gotten him arrested during the imminent Stalinist purges. After his death, Mayakovsky was lauded by Stalin. His pro-Bolshevik political verses were glorified and proudly shown off by the state, whilst his other poems and satirical plays were quietly supressed. Get this book if you want to see every side of Mayakovsky, and not just the one that has been publicized for years as propaganda.

this book takes it to a new level. I have never understood SNMP as well as I do now. Makes wireshark much simpler to use when looking at reading SNMP MIB's.
I pretty much hate SNMP. It's stems from not understanding it. This book has given me a grasp on some of the concepts, but has refered to a few things that I am supposed to already know. It's not for beginners.

This is a rather superficial narrative of Mr. Irwin's life in England and Algeria the 1960s and early 70s. Since he wss an initiate of one of the major Sufi orders, and spent a great deal of time with them, I read the book hoping to gain a deeper understanding of Sufi doctrine and the experience of being a Sufi. Unfortunately Irwin says very little about what Sufi doctrine is, why he concluded that "Sufism must be true," or even what his interior spiritual experience was when he participated so deeply in Sufi practice. Indeed he does not seem to have grappled much with what Sufism meant to him. I think Irwin would say that he has opted for honesty, eschewing the false coherence and doctrinal certainty of a true believer's conversion narrative. While I appreciate that, somehow the resulting book imparts very little of what his deeper subjective experience was, except to provide a chronology of events and passing phases in Irwin's younger days. Because he stops the book abruptly in the early 1970s, we are left wondering whether and how Sufism has continued to play a role in his life -- i.e. what his long term view is of his early religious experience. What did he learn? How did it change him?
Watching fake surgery on TV will not make you a surgeon. Watching most probably imitation Sufis will not make you a Sufi.There are books by the contemorary Sufi exponent, Idries Shah, which can teach you about yourself if your greed to use the new knowledge for the old unrgenerate self will not veil you from what you read.Go for the real. I once did.
Seems to be a lot of criticism of this book and its author among the other reviewers. I dissent. Although one can certainly fault Irwin for making some poor "life choices" and doing some pretty woolly thinking in his youth - and who hasn't - to do so is to miss the point. To miss the forest for the trees. I've this book twice and will read it again. Recommend lt.
Mr. Irwin says toward the end of the book that if there was something to "get" as a dervish, he basically didn't get it. The entire book is a demonstration of this, as Mr. Irwin chronicles after his initiation in Algeria that he returned to England and dabbled in drugs, satanism, Scientology and the like. He makes his own case for why he is not an adequate reporter of life as a dervish.He also says that the 60's and the culture of the 60's was a wash and came to nothing.I am getting really tired of people saying that the 60's came to nothing. Let's take the time period form 1964 to 1974. (1960 and 1961 were more like the 50's than the later 60's.) During this time period Cesar Chavez organized farmworkers to unionize, advocate and strike for their rights. There were national boycotts of farm products in support of farmworkers. I remember living in Detroit during one of these boycotts and marching for over a mile with people holding signs that said Yes We Can! in Spanish. We marched in the winter cold until we gathered together in a Catholic Church, which was warm inside. There were candles lit. We sang. We drank Mexican hot chocolate together and experienced the power of people who gather together and stand up to power to assert the people's rights.That was powerful stuff. That was the 60's and early 70's.The ecology movement took shape in the 1960's with the first Earth Day in 1970. The idea that we are responsible for what we do to the earth, and if we treat the earth badly that will have consequences for us, really took hold in the consciousness of people in the United States.Representatives of Eastern religions came to the United States in great numbers in the 1960's and early 70's. While some of them were fakes and power hungry, there were those who in earnest encouraged Americans to look beyond the ego and gratification through consumerism to something deeper. That sense of spiritual yearning that was so strong in the 1960's has never since faded.In this time period the Beatles sang "Love is all you need." There was truth in songs like these, that said that love is the essence of the meaning of life.The 60's and early 70's saw an emphasis on communal life and community service. Some people took that message to heart and built their live's work around those values. There were "seeds" in the 60's and 70's- teaching us that a life of service is a worthy life.While the clothes in the 1950's were fashionable. they were also fairly constricting, especially for women. In the 1960's women started wearing more comfortable clothes- jeans, tee shirts, sandals. It became increasingly acceptable for clothes to be both colorful and comfortable.Mr. Irwin also said that the only TV show worth watching during the 1960's was "The Prisoner." "The Prisoner" was a worthy show, but so was "The Outer Limits", which Mr. Irwin totally ignores. He also leaves out "The Twilight Zone", "Star Trek" and the often biting comedy of "The Smother's Brothers Comedy Hour." He also leaves out "Soul Train" which had a lot of impact on our culture and started its run on television in 1971.In the 60's and early 70's the field of humanistic psychology blossomed, and there was an increasing sense of respect for and recognition of the dignity of people who came for counseling. The Association for Humanistic Psychology was founded in 1961. The rise of humanistic psychology and the increasing influence of client-centered psychology (which had been developed earlier) effectively confronted earlier models of psychology that assumed that the entire problem someone might experience was only within themselves, rather than also possibly in their families, communities and societies. Proper asset allocation for one's own risk tolerance is vital. The principles outlined in this book have helped my portfolio exceed my expectations.
The Intelligent Asset Allocator sits right next to 'Stocks for the Long Run' and 'The Intelligent Investor' on my bookshelf; it's a classic.I enjoy thinking about asset allocation and how to best structure a portfolio. No matter what studies you may trust the most, asset allocation is clearly a major driver of portfolio returns. This book invites you to deconstruct your assumptions and build them back up again. I would have liked a book ten times as long, but then I really enjoy seeing all the intricacies. Even so, there is a lot hinted at in these pages that gives you further directions to explore. Even if you are familiar with diversification, various asset classes, portfolio theory and the reasons for indexing, there is a lot of value here. I will admit the book is growing somewhat dated with respect to the time frame it discusses, but the book loses nothing in relevance.I am still building assets, and because this book referenced both standard and aggressive growth portfolios (I employ a portfolio very similar to the 'Madonna' Portfolio he mentions, with a couple key differences), I knew I was on the same trail as the author, which was incredibly gratifying for me. For those with different backgrounds, the insights you find relevant may differ.I will say the book would benefit from a greater discussion of various portfolios. How important is it to mimic the market (or rather, what is the risk associated with failing to look like the market, which is true to some degree of every portfolio?) What is the role of TIPS in a portfolio (or rather, when does Inflation become a central risk? I maintain that you only need them in retirement, but am eager to hear different opinions.) How much risk should you take with the credit portion of your portfolio (I use intermediate term treasuries myself - covariance vs equities is just too superior not to, even with the risk of rising rates. Again, I like to hear other opinions.)With reference to portfolios I've read about: the 'Gone Fishing Portfolio' was also amazingly comprehensive, if not as focussed on portfolio building as the IAA, and the portfolio it proposes is pretty solid. Swenson's books are very good, and his suggested portfolio is top notch, if history is any judge. Swedroe suggests a pretty bullet-proof portfolio, so even though returns won't blow you out of the water, they should be solid, and the ride should be serene (which can be very important in a retirement portfolio, as lack of volatility both increases SAFEMAX and decreases the odds of running out of money early... i.e. the trade-off for lower returns can yield a higher cash flow.) All of these authors are worth the read.
Bernstein has done a nice job in debunking the most important myth of the investment field - namely, that it is possible to beat the market on a sustained basis. It is an unfortunate reality that the investment management industry - stockbrokers, mutual funds, and many investment advisors - are still able to sell their products despite the long term research that Bernstein cites, showing plainly that no one beats the market consistently in the long haul. Earlier in my investment "career" I tried several of these "experts" and was frustrated that they made more money on the investments than I did.What Bernstein does do well is to collect the results of much academic research with his own analysis, and clearly show thefacts about investment performance. The principle findings are that each type of financial instrument - large cap stock, small cap stock, bond, etc., have characteristic historical performance; and that the most important decision investors face is their allocation of their investments across these classes. He gives simple but powerful suggestions.Bernstein's goal is to make this information available to all, whether or not the reader understands financial math and statistics. I believe that he does a good job at this, separating the mathematical and statistical details for those who want to see them.I would strongly recommend this to any investors who are still purchasing individual stocks or actively managed mutual funds.
I bought 'The Intelligent Asset Allocator' right after loosing my shirt in the dot com bust about nine years ago. I came to the realization that there had to be a better method to sound long-term investing than chasing highly volatile internet stocks. For most part, I have followed a broad asset allocation investment strategy with re-allocation annually. The big lesson: I also learned to enjoy life, volunteer, be thankful, encourage others, and nurture great friendships.What I liked about this book are the explanations about risk and reward in a straight-forward understandable math context. Risk is defined as the standard deviation of the annual returns for a particular asset (e.g, stock, fund, bond). Dr. Bernstein uses a set of interesting coin toss investment examples throughout several of the chapters to illustrate this risk/reward strategy. Nice approach to introducing the topic for each chapter. By Chapter 3, simple risk/reward plots are shown based on different ownership percentages of two assets. The book does a great job explaining the rationale for selecting portfolio percentages for various asset classes.Actually, Dr. Bernstein has published a collection of books on asset allocation, each with a different level of technical content. The Intelligent Asset Allocator The Four Pillars of Investing The Investor's ManifestoI found the following quote on his website appealing: "When I wrote The Intelligent Asset Allocator, I thought I was producing a volume for the average investor. Turns out I was wrong: the book's audience was closer to the average electrical engineer. So I tried a little harder and produced The Four Pillars of Investing. Close, but no cigar: still lots of complaints about all the math and graphs."Regardless of which book you acquire, asset allocation and portfolio theory is worth understanding for any investor.

These are fun xylophone standards to play. I play these on my marimba with hardish yarn mallets and it sounds fine. The range of the music is of course only about 3.5ish octaves, so it will fit on most instruments. Don't be fooled by the preview, there are full size sheets of xylophone-only music included. The print size is fine and easy to read. each solo is 2 pages I believe, but you are supposed to repeat sections like crazy. All of these sound good and contain the obligatory sections expected of ragtime music.I wouldn't consider this appropriate background music to perform at a function, though, it is a little too attention grabbing. All the pieces are two mallet, but technically not too difficult. The only difficulty lies in getting them up to the recommeneded tempos, but I think most people would never know if you were only playing at 3/4 speed.
A book that every serious mallet student should own. Make sure to use authoritative recordings to perfect style. There are some by George Hamilton Green himself out there.
These xylophone rags are so much fun to play on the xylophone! They are easy to learn, and fun to play.
Great collection of GHG Rags!
This collection contains famous xylo ragtime pieces. The piano accompaniment make it easier to play without marimba quartet accompaniment. The given chord changes are the greatest one that this book gives. It helps so much with the improvisation.
There are a lot of complicated songs in this book. I've used them to help improve my sight reading and learning them is fun.

GURPS Magic does exactly what it sets out to do, from it's excellent spell design rules and extra spells for the default magic system to it's simple yet well-made systems for entirely new, more freeform magic. As GURPS supplements go, it is one of the best I have ever owned, and does it's job not just well, but with panache.The indexing and organization of the book, like all GURPS 4E books, is easily one of the best of any RPG I have ever played or seen a core book or sourcebook for. If you can't find what you need to in one of the GURPS 4E books, you're usually not trying to.Even if you don't plan on playing GURPS, this sourcebook is full of useful contextual information, like almost every GURPS book is. I have so far used this information in crafting GURPS settings and to make a Savage Worlds campaign world feel more authentic.While not useful for every campaign, there is simply too much in the book that is useful to rate this anything less than five stars.
Excellent presentation of various ways to handle magic in a fantasy campaign. Steve Jackson's staff always does their homework in the reams of fantasy fiction writing. Their take here is quite different mechanically from Old School Vancian magick. Not better, just more flexible for stories that deviate from the Gygaxian setting model. Looking forward to trying it out with the right players!

Every spell you'll ever need (and rules to create every other spell) are here and not just for medieval campaigns, but science fantasy as well!
One of the things I appreciate about GURPS books is the color page edges signifying each chapter. I can open the book and see which chapter I'm in by the page color border. Unless I missed it, the Amazon page doesn't specify that the book would be printed in B&W. Otherwise, the book is exactly as ordered. GURPS 4e Magic, in all its glory.
Finally in print through the magic of print-on-demand, the default magic system for GURPS offers tons of spells and options for those who don't want to dive into the other systems. Plus, it's the default! Everyone who plays GURPS needs this one.
An absolute essential for any game with spell casting as anything other than a side note. Spell trees are not present (and are involved) but they're in a free PDF put out by Steve Jackson Games online, so that's not a major issue.
