This book was recommended by a close friend who is a professional theater actor. I'm not a theater actor, nor do I study it, I am a theater enthusiast. I would always prefer a play over a movie. Thus, consider this a layman's review. Jones had enlightened me over an aspect of theater, that I admit, I normally overlooked: the background and stage. Typically, I'm focused on the actors' performance and story unfolding, and pay very little mind to the setting. I mean I would reference it for context of the dialogue, but it carries more of an importance than I originally thought. He also discusses the importance of costuming. This I definitely paid attention in my focus of the actors. The stage setting, the background, the lighting--he discusses their conception and construction quite...poetically. I read the book twice simply because I loved the way he spoke, and to research the plays he cited and worked on. It is a brilliant text that engages one to think dramatically, to think how to be true to context, and enhance the beauty of scenes or moments in life that we typically take for granted. Most layman's may not realize it, but the stage actually transcends the mood of the scene, the actors are secondary to that effect. Anyone who desires to succeed in stage design would make an effort to read this book.
Bought this for an Intro to Design class, it is a good read. I wouldn't have bought it if not for school though. There are some fantastic quotes in this book that I have carried in my memory bank. I recommend this only for those with interests in theatre, but in particular those with a focus on design.
Worth about a million stars at least. Be warned; this is not an instructional text. Rather it is a great and inspiring observation of the (then current) state of the theatre, as well as descriptions of former great productions and the art/set designers, lighting designers and actors who made them that way. Super inspirational, this book will make you work harder.
This book attempts to define a philosophical approach to stage design, to describe the "why" that underscores the "how" of scenery, lighting, sound, costuming. It does not prescribe or describe practical application. The writing style is flowery and a bit to get over initially. Jones's ideas are interesting, if a few are a bit old-fashioned. However, everything old is new again, including theatre design, so the ideas that Jones presents about theatre design's purpose, meaning, and value are useful to consider. This is a book to reference when considering general design goals, or to glean beautifully worded phrases from for research or concept presentations that reveal and elevate the ART in the art of stage design.
Simply put, a must have for the library of anyone interested in theatrical design.Robert Edmund Jones was the father of the New American Stagecraft and has, as such, influenced all scenic and lighting designers who followed - even if they are not aware of it!As someone now entering his 20th year as a college prof, and around his 30th as a professional designer, I am constantly reinvigorated and enthused by the words of Jones. He reminds us of the importance of the arts in our society and why we do what we do.A rough paraphrase from the book - "Do we carry visions of poetry with us as we shout directions to electricians on ladders? Yes."
Even all these many years later the lessons in this book are valuable. REJ was a pioneer and a visionary and this book helps us to understand what he envisioned for the theatre and hopefully to help us to achieve some of his ideas. I have read this book many, many times and I never tire of it or the ideas. If only we could get to this state in American Theatre..... This is a must read for any student of theatre.
needed it for class, its an easy read and not dry
Pointless. The whole book is the author acting self important and saying things everyone knows as if they're big insights.

Author Paul Brodie once again offers practical, inspirational information written with ease and clarity. This is a small book but packs a lot of punch about how to increase happiness. Happiness is a choice, he tells us. Mr. Brodie writes with passion and shares his own personal struggles in order to convey his ideas about loving what we do, recognizing that happiness is a choice, showing gratitude, happiness being more important than money, what life is all about, enjoying the things that matter most, power of self-suggestion, investing in our minds, worrying, and what happiness means. I think his list of questions at the end of each chapter, encourages the reader to contemplate his/her own feelings. This is a great book for anyone dealing with work-related issues, family issues, depression, holding a grudge, worrying too much, jealousy, and bullying – in general, anyone who is dealing with anything that is getting in the way of happiness.
Happiness is one of those loaded terms. We all have very different ideas as to what can make us happy. For some people it might be a new car while others just receiving enough food is a blessing. Regardless of what we need to be happy, we all crave and require it. In the end the decision to be happy is a personal choice - one cultivated through your mentality, attitude and values.Paul takes us on a journey into his own life to draw examples and share insights that can help us reflect on our own happiness. Written in a concise and easy-to-understand manner, the Pursuit of Happiness is an honest look at what makes us happy and how we can avoid making mistakes that will cause us to feel depressed or upset.
This is my favourite book out of the five books that Paul has written. I found myself nodding my head as I was reading the book, particularly in Chapter 2 where he talks about happiness being a choice. I couldn't agree more. This book is for you if you're struggling with that voice inside your head that always seems to send you off in the opposite direction of where you want to go.Easy to read and with actionable points, Paul keeps it real by sharing his own stories and that happiness isn't always easy, but it is achievable.
This book really touched my heart. Anything to do with bullying makes my blood boil. I’ve experienced a fair bit of attitude myself throughout my life and it touched my heart to see how Paul magnanimously forgave those who made his life such misery. It’s the only way.The one thing we all have in common is the pursuit of happiness. I love how Paul approaches this pursuit with thoughtfulness and real life examples, which I can adjust for my life and implement also. Thank you Paul for writing another motivational guide. I’m looking forward to your next book!
Honest, thoughtful and engaging. I enjoyed reading this short book. The author wrote about overcoming many obstacles and making up your mind to change your outlook on life. He shared personal stories that I found helpful in applying to my own life. Great short, inspiring read. Brodie's perspective as a teacher is unique--I could see this as a great gift for young people who are facing bullying and for educators who may be dealing with tough situations.
A motivational book from Paul Brodie with so many reasons and tools to choose happiness. Great questions at then end of each chapter to think about and prompt changes in your life. His chapter on gratitude is such a good reminder to be thankful. Paul's story is weaved throughout and is well written. It's a short book that packs a punch. A great read!
Another fantastic tool for people seeking life nirvana. The author skilfully shows how to weave alchemy by transforming negative experiences into gold. Paul Brodie’s latest book the Pursuit of Happiness is a great short-read for time-challenged people looking for sage tips and advice to live their best life. Highly recommended - especially because the author strides the talk!
Very short with basic ideas that are familiar to most. Too many anecdotal references that really added nothing to the content for me.

This is a great in-depth scholarly work on Tantra and how it fits in with Hindu beliefs. It was not intended to "teach" Tantra or to be a manual on how to practice it. Rather, it delves deeply into the history, mythology, imagery, and theology underlying this religious system. Anyone who wants to read this book should be aware that there is really no such thing as "tantra yoga" per se. Yoga is a system derived from the Vedas; Tantra is a system based on writings called "tantras". However, like all Hindu systems, they intersect and borrow heavily from one another. While the sexual aspect of Tantra does set it apart from other Hindu systems, many sects treat it metaphorically and not literally (although some do). Sadly, it is this aspect that has captured the Western imagination, resulting (in my opinion) a gross misrepresentation by charlatans wanting to capitalize on the salacious. That's sad.
Georg Feuerstein is a well-known serious scholar of Sanskrit and yoga and I was familiar with his work from other works such as "Textbook of Yoga" (1975), "Encyclopedia of Yoga".(1997), "The Deeper Dimension of Yoga" (2003). I was pleased to find "Tantra: The path of ecstasy" to be immensely readable and well organised. This book engaged me all the way. The book places the development of Tantra into an historical framework, and also the explains the various branches of tantra, some of the differences between them and also their similarities. How the energetic body of nadis, koshas, cakras, kundalini shakti and the use of mantras, mudras and ritual are all part of the tantric conception but also much of which has antecedents in Vedic literature was also helpful. It may be an advantage to already have some familiarity with the philosophical and cultural material. This book is written by a scholar but is short of scholarly - far too readable for that. It is a high quality and informative book for the general reader. If you are interested in the subject, but are new to Sanskrit, to the terminology and the philosophical ideas, you may need to accept that it will take a bit of work, but this book can lead you to a good understanding of the place of Tantra, without the confusion and taint of neo-tantrism. Neo-tantrism is much different and far more shallow than traditional Tantra, and if it is only neo-trantrism that you are looking for, this book may disappoint you. However, perhaps it is worth the challenge to find out the difference.
This book gives a very broad look into spiritual practices, ranging from an overview of Indian archetypes through the ages, to a couple descriptions of occult ceremonies. Reading this prepared me for the depth of my 500-hour Yoga Teacher Training last winter. Understanding the Indian view of time, the ages ("yugas"), samskara (repeating cycles), and more helped me understand where many Indians are coming from. Tantra differs from Hinduism in that it doesn't imply worship of gods or goddesses, but instead recognizes the divine in everything. Tantra moved India out of the case system and elevated the status of women to equals. The writing is dense, but I highlighted every Sanskrit word and it helped me remember a lot more Sanskrit!
Excellent book on the tantric path, providing the reader the framework of tantric/vedic thought in the first few chapters, which is absolutely needed for any new spiritual seeker on the tantric path. The book continues to explain other elements of tantra, but in theory not practice. If you want true practice, learn sanskrit to start, then learn mantras.Body is Asana, Mind is Mantra, Prana is Breathe. =)
1. Not academically rigorous2. Author has lost objectivity3. Questionable sources (cites many new-age western quacks)4. If you have studied Indic religious systems in any academic capacity this will be disappointing unless you're looking for a bathroom read that can double as toilet paper.
There are many Tantra schools or lineages and the subject is complex. Having thousands of years of re-visioning things can get complex. But Fuerstein is able to present in a rather straight forward manner the essence of the esoteric world of Tantra. To many it may be a surprise how much of this is already in the western pop culture. ie chakra, mantra, and mandala work. And for the neo Tantric looking for a sex manual this is not the book.
Excellent review and explication of the Tantra schools of India. Provides a bird's eye view of the terrain, not a deep dive into philosophy or technique, and proves itself worth the read and $
This book is well thought, written and developed. If your interested in the origin of the Tantra philosophical system of India, this is your kind of author. From the cosmogony to the explanation of the forces that reing the physical, mental and universal planes, Feuerstein exposed the most fundamental concepts of Indic thought, all written on a clear and beautiful way. Five stars!

From Publishers Weekly
Switching between first person and third person, this loose narrative of developers trying to build a resort on Maori land revolves around the family of Roimata Kararaina and her husband, Hemi Tamihana. Although land development is the central theme, Grace, the New Zealand author of several novels and short-story collections, is at her best portraying the lives of her characters, from their daily tasks (eel-fishing and cooking) to the stories they tell?both real hard-luck stories and ancestral myths. While the writing here is often elegant in its simplicity (the first-person sections in particular are beguilingly direct?"I have loved Hemi since I was five," Roimata announces by way of introduction) and the information about Maori life intriguing, the plot thread is often buried. Individual segments stand out because of Grace's able descriptions, but liberal use of Maori words such as papakainga and tangi with no explanation (a glossary might have helped) add to the confusion. When the conflict with "the dollarman" (their nickname for a Mr. Dolman, who comes to try to convince them to accept a project that includes not only a nightclub and golf course, but also "trained whales and seals etcetera") heats up, it moves matters along, but those sharp-edged segments can be disorienting in tandem with all the magical storytelling. This uneasy mix never jells completely, and the saga of native people suffering at the hands of an imperialist oppressor is not especially fresh. Copyright 1995 Reed Business Information, Inc.

A really great story about Maori traditions, and the value of homeland (even when Pakeha are trying to offer you money so they can build a strip mall and a resort on your land). Uses various elements of storytelling, oral tradition, and magical realism to create a read that I couldn't put down.
I had a hard time reading this book -- there were parts of it that I found lyrical & compelling (like the introduction, and many of the chapters narrated by toko) and parts that seemed very heavy-handed (especially the telling of the history of protests over land that had been claimed by the gov't during wartime and the chapters narrated by hemi). Especially early in the book I found it easy to set it aside for periods of time, but I got more engaged as I got to the second section. One major weakness is that there's no glossary or translation of any of the Maori terms, so it's a much more difficult read for someone who is trying to become more familiar with the people and culture than someone who already is.
This is a wonderful read. I haven't read much literature from New Zealand nor about the Maori culture. This was a great place to start. The writing is really fabulous and the characters really engaging. The book was bought to read while touring around New Zealand for the first time. It was a really nice confluence of reading a great novel and trying to imagine it happening in the place I was traveling.
Beautiful.
I can't recall when I've ever felt so strongly the musical rhythm of an author's style, or the extent to which it changes to suit the tempo of the action and themes. In the first third of this wonderful book by a very talented writer, conversations between the simple Mary and Granny Tamihana, the guardian of Maori traditions, echo and sound like chants; between Roimata and Hemi, a happily married couple, they resemble duets with complimentary themes. The scene in which Mary gives birth is a grand, complex chorus with the several family members singing over, around, and above each other as they fight for the narrative line. Toko's story of his big fish is a soaring aria which ventures into a mystical realm, for Toko is a seer. And all this music seems totally appropriate to the lives of these Maori characters living in harmony with the land and their ancestors. The middle third of the book changes, as Hemi, the father of the family, abruptly introduces the harsh notes of reality which occur when "the works" closes down, and he and his friends find themselves unemployed. In mournful tones he comments on the loss of tradition, language, and connection to the land which are coming about as education is imposed on their children by outside authorities, and people such as himself accept outside jobs. Their very existence as a group is also threatened by developers who want to buy their land to put up hotels, build seaside parks where visitors can play with the dolphins and whales, and commercialize the lifestyle these Maori have enjoyed all their lives. In the final third of the book, as the Maoris fight for their land, the staccato, simple language is like the harsh beat of a war drum, and the songs disappear from the language, not returning until the rebuilding of the sacred house and the funeral of a key character bring about harmony and poetry once again. It is hard to imagine that Patricia Grace did not deliberately tailor her prose style to her subject matter, yet this seems so completely natural--so totally without artifice--that one wonders if this harmony of words and subject might be the ultimate, triumphant example of the unity of story and life which she so vividly celebrates in this memorable and touching novel. This was a mandatory book in a Pacific Literature class. Lucky for me. It is filled with complex symbolism that tells not only of a land struggle for a people who are holding on to their traditions, but how they learn, and choose what they take from "Western" ideas in order to fight for what little of their own land that the government has left for them. A lot of other people -including Hawaiians- are going through this now, which makes this book as relevant today as it was when it was written. The story is told through Toko, a deformed child who has a special knowing. He is central figure in the book, and not only as a story teller. His "second mother", Roimata, is the other story teller. Although, everyone has a story, they are the only two who actually tell the stories. It is an enriching and enlightening book for anyone familiar or not familiar with Moari culture or the struggles between land developers, government, and native peoples of any country or island. It is also much more than that, but I don't want to write an essay just to tell you how great the book is!
Like another reviewer from Hawai'i, I also read this book in a Pacific Island literature class. What could have easily become a story about white man's exploitation of the Maori people and the environment (and I'm okay with that kind of story too), was instead turned into a glimpse inside the Polynesian mind and set of values. The sections most unsettling to us Caucasians -- those on the mystical aspects of the wood carvings -- relate much about the way the Polynesian views the past, as being in front of them, something to learn from. And we learn that what we regard as "ancestor worship" is really a matter of valuing those who have cared for the land and passed it on to us, along with the knowledge of how to live on it. We're also shown the value of stories: This book is told as a collection of the stories of many persons, each of whom has a unique perspective, something a little different to tell. Some stories are pragmatic, some we would term "mystical," but they too contain a valid warning. This book probably did more than any ever -- fiction or non-fiction, and I'm a voracious reader -- to help me understand Polynesian values, which are basically the same values as those of indigenous peoples all over the world -- care for the land, respect the ancestors, listen to others' stories. Our planet desperately needs indigenous values!

It's Robert McGinnis. What more needs to be said? If you're a fan, you'll love this. If you're not, you might turn into one.
If readers have been followers of this remarkable illustrator for some time, they may already have a copy of "Tapestry: The Paintings of Robert McGinnis" published back in the year 2000. Such readers may be wondering if that book is entirely redundant with this one and if this one is worth having. Well, I think it is. Any career overview of this type has certain highlights that need to be acknowledged, and those images are present in both books, but this volume seems determined not to present them in the same way. Images that appeared as quarter-page reproductions in "Tapestry," the front cover illustration, for example, may be a full page here. One image that appeared as a page and a half in the older book is cropped much closer to the figure and is reproduced as a double page spread in this volume. This book also reproduces dozens of illustrations that are not present in the older book. This one includes some sketches and photo-reference. It also features an interview with McGinnis that offers some insight into what the illustration game was like back when scarcely a week went by without the appearance of a McGinnis illustration somewhere. If you are a McGinnis fan you will NOT be disappointed by this book, whether you have a copy of "Tapestry" or not.
I was a casual admirer of McGinnis' art from his Hard Case Crime covers and rolled the dice and picked this book up. As soon as I was twenty or so pages in I realized that I previously had had NO IDEA of the depth of this man's talent! This is a truly INCREDIBLE book, and one recommend to ANY fan of American art and illustration. It's a seemingly comprehensive overview of McGinnis' career, from hippie-dippie sleaze PBO covers to Mike Shayne series art, Guideposts illustrations to late-career Hard Case masterworks. Excellent reproductions (many full page) throughout, with sketches, roughs, and preliminaries accompanying brief biographical text. TRULY ESSENTIAL.
Fans of Robert E McGinnis' art will be delighted with this book. And those who don't know who he is will be surprised by his stunning work.Born in 1926, McGinnis started his career early in 1947. However he didn't start painting paperback covers until 1958. But after he started, he has painted over a thousand of them, on top of other illustrations he has created for movies and magazines. He is one of the great illustrations who is as inspiring as Norman Rockwell, Andrew Wyeth, Coby Whitmore, Drew Struzan. This 176-page hardcover features over six decades worth of splendid work. The paper quality used is low gloss and reproduction quality is fantastic. Bravo to publisher Titan Books.Actually, there was another McGinnis artbook published in 2000 titled Tapestry: The Paintings of Robert E. McGinnis. There are some duplication of artworks but this book is still worth getting because it has included works from 2000 to 2014, Yes, McGinnis is still painting today. The book starts of with a lengthy interview by author Art Scott with the artist and is followed by the galleries of artworks. You'll get to see the cover art that has adorned paperback titles of the past, iconic movie posters such as for Breakfast at Tiffany's and James Bond, works for various magazines, his personal paintings of nudes, Western and contemporary landscapes. Among which you'll see the many stunning 'McGinnis women'. His style, sense of aesthetics and colours are amazing. One cover was deemed to saucy and had a sticker pasted strategically over the offending bit.The accompanying text has McGinnis sharing his creative process, insights from his career and some stories behind the selected pieces of works. He talks about elaborate wraparound art that require meticulous research and extensive model shoots, movie posters that require countless iterations, paintings for men's magazines where he did not want to be associated with, and other interesting stuff. Not only that, I also enjoyed reading the descriptions of those paperbacks, such as one that has "Man, she had a shape to make corpses kick open caskets - and she was dead set on giving me rigor mortis."Most of the time, the artworks are reproduced in their raw form without the other forms of typography or designs. Even when actual book covers are used, the art is not obscured because McGinnis had taken into account the space for the book titles and other text elements. This wonderful artbook will make a fine addition to the shelves of any art lovers.Highly recommended. One of my favourites for 2014.(See more pictures of the book on my blog. Just visit my Amazon profile for the link.)
I'm sure I read numerous novels with McGinnis covers back in my teen years without ever making the connection. Viewing this collection took me back to those days, suddenly linking all those covers in my retro mind. Best of all, not only is the art just as terrific as in its day but the book offers fascinating insights such as McGinnis' repeated use of a hero who was a ringer for James Coburn, or a cover McGinnis illustrated with a naked woman (her breasts and crotch blocked from view by arms and other items) which the publisher made him repaint a bikini top and bottom on the woman; after publication, once McGinnis had his painting back, he repainted the bikini back out. Fun stuff!
I have recently taken an interest in illustrators. R.E.M. spent several decades creaing book cover art for mystery and adventure book series, such as, Perry Mason, Carter Brown, Mike Shayne, etc. His art for magazines is also sampled here. As well as some gallery work. If you are looking for some in-depth account of his life this is not the book you want. Frankly, I would be surprised if that book exists. It is a nice overview of his art however.
Superbly reproduced artwork in a large format, which allows you to really appreciate art (most of which McGuiness made in surprisingly small formats to begin with). The text is excellent and informative, with many insights provided by the artist himself as the result of the author's interviews with him. I know I'm showing my age, but it really takes me back in time whenever I look at it.
Even if you don’t recognize his name, you’ve probably seen some of his art. McGinnis is a key figure in the history of movie and paperback promotions. This book is packed with examples of his commercial work, as well as his landscapes. Some drafts are also included. Thoughtful text provides information about his career and creative process. This is a beautiful volume – would make an excellent gift.
