For those you wants to know about the rise of a Navy SEAL should get this book. The author Howard E. Wasdin narrates the story of his life from ground zero till the highest point of his life as a kid, teenager, enlisting in the Navy, reenlisting as a SEAL, his war memoirs till his graduation as a Dr.Wasdin narrates in a such a way where the reader has a clear view and understanding of his story. Supplied with a detailed explanation for every military abbreviation narrated, will never leave the readers puzzled.Wasdin gives a thorough detailed insight on his SEAL training and challenges he faced, the missions his carried out to protect his country. He shares the bone chilling story of the Battle of Mogadishu, Operation Gothic Serpent to be specific which was carried out on 3 Oct 1993. The mission was to capture the key members of the late Somalian warlord Mohamad Farrah Aidid. The mission was only suppose to be completed within 1 hour but instead the US military was pinned down by Somalian militias within Aidid's most powerful district which is the Bakara Market.Wasdin's narration does not only reflect his patriotism towards his nation, but he is also an icon of inspiration to other fellow Americans and the rest of the world who is planning on endeavoring into the world of military.A must buy and read book!! Double thumbs up and hats off to Howard E. Wasdin!
An excellent read for those of you who are either former military or thinking about starting a military career. This book is a well written account of Howard E. Wasdin's exploits as a U.S. Navy Seal. It starts with his childhood and progresses into his military career in the Seals. The book also addresses specific details of the battle which occurred at Mogadishu; the battle in which the U.S. Army lost a couple of Blackhawk helicopters, as depicted in the Hollywood movie, "Blackhawk Down."
The autobiography of a man who started life terrified of his stepfather only to learn as a BUD/S candidate that his acquired mental toughness made him a natural for the SEALs. The story continues with the transition from SEAL Team Two to Team Six and sniper school, and culminates with the story of the SEALs in Mogadishu in the run up to the battle depicted in "Black Hawk Down." Wasdin and co-author Templin spend enough time on his upbringing and family to humanize a military professional who otherwise could have come across as a fictional superhero found in an airport thriller. Sniper kills at 800+ yards? Check. Shot three times, but still pouring fire into the enemy? Yep. Offered a job training SEALs in recognition of his excellence? You bet. But what sticks with you is how hard Wasdin fought to become something he'd never been as a Spec Ops careerist: a good father and husband.
I should start by saying this, I'm a tough person. I have the ability to push forward and run 20 miles in the dark alone by myself, I've always thought I was invincible or special in some way, that made me different than others. That believe was of course humbled when I started practicing different martial arts but the simple fall backs were always, well they've been doing this longer so they should be better, but given how long they've been doing it, they should be much better. All of those preconceived notions about myself were shattered when I started working out with a former SEAL. A nice unassuming guy, not in your face aggressive like a Marine, but just existed and had the ability to turn off a switch in his body that told him it was time to stop running, doing pull ups, doing push up's etc. He was by definition, the most capable human being I have ever worked out with. Not the strongest, not the biggest, not the best looking not the most gifted, simply put. The most capable. The reason this book is so great is because it gives me an idea of what that guy had to do to get to where he was when I met him. The mentality, that grit. It can't be taught but it can be developed and harnessed by anyone, and this book taught me one thing, as tough as I think I am, I am not nearly that tough. I'd break, and so would most of us. From the opening story of his childhood to how touched he is by people in his later years this is a great book that not only opens your eyes to the training that goes into war, it's heartbreaking to see the effects of war, to walk those streets and hear those screams and have a vivid story of people in shock at a scratch and people operating despite multiple gun shot wounds. The book goes into detail about the politics involved in war and how we as American's shouldn't call it a war anymore. We are now an occupying force until a person in an office gets their votes then says, okay, good, pull out.The book details the struggles from childhood, to adulthood to what you will do for money in between. I can't say enough about this book but can say this to people who write bad reviews. One reviewer claims that he didn't like the book because it felt like an advertisement for products, I personally couldn't have been happier. I have spent great deals of times in tents and cold and wet, hungry and trying to figure out how to do this or that and what would make those task easier. I read this book and looked up the products he used, the things he trusts. Why, because anyone who has even went to a camp ground once that had a water slide will tell you, knowing what to use and what to bring, being prepared is one of the greatest things another person can pass on to you. Do I agree with everything, no, I wear Khul pants, he doesn't, but I'm happy he went into detail on what gun he trust, what food, what clothes, glasses etc, because people who have done these things, like to share and pass on how much they love these things. I can list a good handful of products that I swear by, from a robot vacuum to a knife to a computer. The things that people trust and share is just as good as an amazon review.Second, so there are spelling errors, the U.S. Constitution has grammatical errors, that's life. The book is well written, it's well researched and it's paced well. The story unfolds linearly and has a few spelling errors, none that make me slam my kindle on the ground in frustration as I have currently lost the point of the story. A few "was" could be "were's". I am as much as a grammatically ninja as the next person, but the guy didn't go to school and get a masters degree in writing, his editor missed a few common things, when I wrote my book the editor missed them there too. You don't see people shouting about how Anne Frank didn't punctuate things correctly.

I so wish I'd thought to look for this before I began my first bust. It would have saved me a whole lot of time, and increased the chance that the finished piece will dry evenly enough to remain free of cracks before it goes into the kiln. Fingers crossed! Because I tend towards realism (and being a born perfectionist) it took a lot of time to work and re-work the face until it became real enough, and with the subtle smile that I was hoping to achieve. This book has excellent photos of not only the work in clay but also of models who offer a good range of expressions for every mood. It's also full of inspiring pieces from a range of different artists. The techniques are clearly laid out, step by step, and shown in good detail. The only thing that could have improved this for me would be to see some details of neck and shoulders. My figure is of a woman with her eyes half closed, face tilted upwards and slightly to the side. As is almost always the case, the neck and shoulders are the base of a bust, and I was hoping to see some examples of protrusions of the spinal cord, and the scapulas to help to perfect my piece. It's very hard to find photos that help with something like this.Overall though, I highly recommend this book. Love it!
Very detailed book demonstrating different methods (slab, coil, and solid) for completing a human bust in clay. Includes many examples to convey various ages, emotions, and expressions of the human face. Gives instruction for proper placement and proportions of ears, eyes, nose, etc. Confident that this book provides a very good foundation to begin sculpting well developed heads and expressive faces in clay.
Wonderful book! On my very first attempt it helped me sculpt a very nice head!
This book is a waste of money, it’s weak and has mediocre information at best, i give it three stars because I feel generous. I should have returned it, tho. And you shouldn’t buy it. There are MUCH better books on the subject. Faraut’s books are more expensive but you will actually learn the real knowledge. Your money will be well spent. This book is a false economy because you spend less money and get virtually nothing for it.
This is a very simplified way to show how to sculpt, it's what I needed and not overly worded. Gets to the point.
I don't know. The designs in this book were a bit creepy and weird for me. Maybe someone else will like it better. I have other books that I'm happy with.
I think this book is excellent and provides clear, detailed instructions for slab building a head and face to create a unique, expressive work. It addresses form, anatomy, solid basic construction methods and surface treatments. Many of the modeling techniques overlap to building on an armature, but this book addresses only the slab construction method, which I think is much more accessible for beginners. Could a beginner take this book and work with it without a teacher? In many cases, I think so, especially if you have a background in art and/or learn well from books. Some experience handling clay would be helpful, and if you don't want to dive in without a teacher, a basic hand building course should prepare you for the projects in this book. This book is so well done! Highest praise to the author.
This is a wonderful book! It's very descriptive and easy to understand. There are step by step pictures and they have drawn diagrams of the human head so you can better understand how to sculpt them.
