By the end of the two chapters on anger, my get well, DIY plan, fell apart at the last sentence when the wrecking ball of the Fear of the Lord was teased in the following chapter. This is THE book if you ever wanted to experience, UNDONE, by the loving hands of the Great Physician.Don't wait another day; you have nothing to lose, but a bunch of dumb idols, unhealthy pain, and dispair.To the Amazon Reviewer of 18 Aug 18, "Emotions are indicators NOT dictators", please consider quoting the entire sentence that starts with "But this view. . ." is an arguement against, not support for. Their position is absolutely that our emotions are flags of our beliefs, and "We are radically disposed to idolatry, illusion- making, and attempts to secure our lives without bowing before God. Our core problem is not a lack of information - it is flight and rebellion." (from intro, next page). Yes, very much an issue of our free will. We choose poorly.
The Cry of the Soul is by far one of the most impactful books of Christian literature I have ever read, combining some of the most profound and yet basic truths. Profound in that it has moved me to consider and act on the areas of my idolatrous heart where I have yet to allow the true God to intervene and heal me. Basic, because frankly the truth found in this book is nothing new, but draws from scripture practical truth that has been there all along.This book is a breath of fresh air for the Christian who struggles to understand and walk the line between orthodoxy and human depravity, obedience and grace. To break free from the idea that if only I can follow my God with perfection then I can somehow escape pain and trouble. It is good to know that God encourages us to seek Him in our troubles, and that even when I cannot trust Him in my time of darkness, He is not offended by my cries. It is glorious to experience His grace which overcomes the darkness in my soul, and although I never wish to relive those moments, and I often pray they do not return, I am overwhelmed by His goodness and mercy to provide for me. I testify to His beauty and glory through a heart that desires Him all the more, for He has sustained me through all of life's pain.
This is my first time reading one of Dr. Allender's books. I'm a fan of his podcasts and blog through the Allender Center. This book is dense and not in pages but in content. I had it only for a few days, and I feel what it has exposed in my heart towards God is invaluable. A must read for anyone I think. This book really draws a beautiful connection between our emotions and how they play into how we view God. I would say this book gives you a detailed "thermometer" of where your heart is at with God based on your emotions.As a recommendation, don't just breeze through this book letting the words go through your eyes and out your eyes so to speak. Take time to process what Dr. Allender and Dr. Longman have to say. It can be easy to want to move quickly through the book because they're talking about things that our hearts want to hide from and skip over. But I encourage anyone who picks up this book to take a deep breath, sit through the uncomfortable moments (hug the cactus), and sip in the goodness and wisdom these men have brought together in this book.
This book is core to understanding what our emotions are really telling us. So many times we are encouraged to develop coping strategies to manage our emotions. This does not address our core issue. This book opens up the core issues and drives them into the healing work of the Gospel. It actually describes the Gospel in a way that shows its power all the more. A must read for anyone for themselves or if they are listening to a friend. If you are in a position where you listen to others, please read this!
I'm naturally an introspective person, particularly when it come to my negative emotions, and I've long taken those troublesome feelings to God in prayer. Highly engaging informational book that presents three unusual stories about plants and animals around the world, but only two of them are true!Two things I loved: that the authors want readers to go and research to find the truths (or lies) for themselves. The research guide gives them tips on how to spot “fake news,†where to go to find reliable sources, and when to use common sense. The world needs this now. The second thing was the book’s structure: organized in three parts (plants, animals, and humans) with engaging text features and side notes, Two Truths is a feast for the eyes that will have kids saying, “Wow!â€
My fourth-grade daughter LOVES this whole series! We had to buy them for our home library. The facts are so unique and fun, and the illustrations/graphic design are clean and beautiful. Look forward to more of these books!
I teach 5th grade and my students love this book! They ask for it as a read aloud and enjoy debate as to what facts seem true and why they think this way.
I haven't had the chance to use this with my students yet. There is a lot of text for third graders, but I can work with that. This will be great in teaching about "fake news" - how do you know when something is real? How do you know what sources to trust? There are two additional titles in this series coming out and I'm looking forward to getting them too.
The format for this book is brilliant for middle-grade readers! Each chapter has three sections with three different "stories." Two are true; one contains a lie. However, all three sections contain some pretty unbelievable content. Such a fun book to read and discuss with kids. I love the extra tips about research included in the book. A great way to show students the importance of thinking critically, questioning, and verifying facts. You can't believe everything you read!
This is a fantastic book for kids of all ages! We read it around a pool this summer and had so much fun guessing the lie and learning so much from the truths! My teacher sister absconded with my original copy and then my second went to a well-deserving teacher friend! Buy it for classrooms and coffee tables! You won't be disappointed!
This book is on my holiday book gift list for kids. Anyone will be intrigued, but middle grade readers are really intrigued by the crazy living things in this book. I really enjoy book talking this book. Great gift idea!
I bought this book to use with my students (I’m a librarian). It was part of my unit on evaluating information with my seventh graders. They LOVED it!!! They want more! I will buy more books like this. Anything that is educational and engages students is a keeper!
