I ordered this book to read for one of my Ethics classes. I was worried about so much assigned reading to complete in one week, but it turned out to be a book that you just can't put down.It still amazes me that this is a woman's real life story, the story of her family, and how they have impacted science and anyone who works or benefits from the use of cellular research. That means just about every single person is connected to Henrietta in one way or another. This was a great book that I'm so glad I read. I learned a lot and it kept me entertained and fascinated for days. It will really change your perspective and make you appreciate this woman's contribution to our scientific and health fields.
From the very beginning there was something uncanny about the cancer cells on Henrietta Lacks’s cervix. Even before killing Lacks herself in 1951, they took on a life of their own. Removed during a biopsy and cultured without her permission, the HeLa cells (named from the first two letters of her first and last names) reproduced boisterously in a lab at Johns Hopkins — the first human cells ever to do so. HeLa became an instant biological celebrity, traveling to research labs all over the world. Meanwhile Lacks, a vivacious 31-year-old African-American who had once been a tobacco farmer, tended her five children and endured scarring radiation treatments in the hospital’s “colored†ward. In “The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks,†Rebecca Skloot introduces us to the “real live woman,†the children who survived her, and the interplay of race, poverty, science and one of the most important medical discoveries of the last 100 years. Skloot narrates the science lucidly, tracks the racial politics of medicine thoughtfully and tells the Lacks family’s often painful history with grace. She also confronts the spookiness of the cells themselves, intrepidly crossing into the spiritual plane on which the family has come to understand their mother’s continued presence in the world. Science writing is often just about “the facts.†ÂSkloot’s book, her first, is far deeper, braver and more wonderful. This work has the most human of stories at its core, and never deviates from that important, and often heartbreaking, humanity. When science appears, it does so effortlessly, with explanations of cell anatomy or techniques like “fluorescence in situ hybridization†seamlessly worked into descriptions of the coloured wards of Johns Hopkins hospital to Lacks’s hometown of Clover, Virginia. But The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks is not a comfortable read. I visibly winced at descriptions of Henrietta’s blackened, burned skin after multiple rounds of devastating radiation treatments. I put the book down with a heavy sigh after reading about the experiments that black Americans have been unwittingly subjected to over the years. I cried twice, at events that I can’t talk about without seriously spoiling the book. But it is uplifting too, particularly in a stand-out chapter where Henrietta’s children, Deborah and Zakariyya, visit a cancer researcher to see their mother’s cells under a microscope. All of this is to be expected of a book that refuses to shy away from tackling important themes – the interplay between science and ethics, the question of who owns our bodies, and the history of racism in the US. And yet for all its grand scope, skilful writing and touching compassion, there is one simple element that makes As a final thought, I was struck by the parallels between Henrietta’s cells and her story. Henrietta’s entire family history was eventually condensed into a small sliver of cells that you could carry in a glass vial. They have achieved immortality, used by scientists throughout the world. Similarly, her entire life has been condensed into a moving tale and an exceptional book that you could read in a comfortable day. By right, it will achieve the same immortal status.
What a great book. My previous boss gave me a copy to read and I then bought a copy off of Amazon. I'm sending it to my cousin. Its a must read for anyone, regardless of race or ethnicity.
This could have been the amazing story of how a poor black woman's cells are used to combat, cancer, HIV , HPV, polio, and many more. And it is, a mother of five goes to John's Hopkins for a mass in her abdomen, a particularly aggressive form of cervical cancer, likely caused from HPV or other STD's she caught from her philandering husband. it's the casual way the medical community used (and profited from) cells samples from patients. In a world before informed consent, indeed before ethical testing laws, a young, pretty, vivacious woman deals with the culture of non disclosure to patients. A world where the doctor's word is sacrosanct. As a nurse I found this fascinating, people are much more protected now.But it's more than that, it's the story of Henrietta's family finding out 20 years later that their mother's cells are alive, and helping medical science! They deal with anger, disbelief, and a feeling of betrayal, since others have made money from her Henrietta's cells and they, ironically, can't afford health insurance! Skloot does a wonderful job describing the ongoing difficulties meeting the family and gaining their trust, describing their emotions and reactions (including superstition) in a way that humanized them. Many books have been written about the HeLa (HEnrietta LAcks) cells and the their effect on medical science. This book tells you what kind of person she was, and how it affected her family. One of the best books I've read in a while.
The first thing I think about after completing a book is - did I enjoy it? I absolutely did enjoy 'The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks'. And that is despite my lack of initial interest in the book jacket synopsis. Author Rebecca Skloot wrote an entertaining and very informative book. But as with a number of other reviewers, I have a lot of different thoughts about the book, some good and some not so good. The book is really several parallel stories tied closely together. First, there's Henrietta Lack's own story and those of the HeLa cell line developed from her biopsy tissues in 1951. Then there is the story of the Lacks family; impoverished, poorly educated, and ignorant of their mother's medical signifiance. Finally, there's the author's own story about her multi-year effort of research, interviews, and writing Henrietta Lacks' story. At times, the intertwined stories seemed to get in each others way. The disappointing thing to me, is that Henrietta's story itself, gets rather short shrift while the peripheral stories of Henrietta's children, grandchildren, etc.; as well as the author's story, take up the lion's share of the book. These are fairly minor complaints, however. The book is unique, interesting, and most importantly, a joy to read and I recommend it.

From School Library Journal
Gr 5 Up—Prominently featuring images from the vaults of the Walt Disney Company, this vibrant and beautifully designed volume takes readers through the history of the corporation. Divided into three sections that focus on animation ("Drawn Disney"), live-action TV shows and movies ("Disney in Action"), and the theme parks ("Experience Disney"), the book presents the highlights, accentuating the positive: Mickey Mouse, the innovations that Disney made in animation, his pioneering forays into television, and more. The visuals are the stars here—film stills, black-and-white photos of artists at work, memorabilia—and those with an eye to animation will appreciate getting a look at early sketches of now-famous characters, as well as reproduced storyboards and maquettes. Behind-the-scenes information about beloved films and a peek at early technology such as the multiplane camera (used for filming animation) add to the appeal. This is a relentlessly upbeat look at the company that occasionally sacrifices precision in favor of a glossy presentation. At times, the text has the tone of marketing copy, and though the chronology mentions all of the films, those that weren't critical or commercial successes are skipped over. Similarly, the more unsavory moments (racially problematic scenes, Walt Disney's often authoritarian and controlling attitude, the company's World War II propaganda films) are omitted. Still, it's a visual treat that will easily attract readers. VERDICT While those seeking a balanced and in-depth look at Disney may wish to look elsewhere, browsers will enjoy this lighthearted and attractive addition.—Mahnaz Dar, School Library Journal

As a big Disney fan (along with countless millions of others), my main concern was whether there would be enough new visual material that was not duplicated by other books. Thankfully there are, from films (both animated and live action) to disney pins, to theme parks and (as they say) much more. I'm sure that many of us can find omissions (no Figment and Dreamfinder?) but maybe there will be a Volume 2 someday. There's also Jim Fanning's writing style. It feels more like Jim is chatting with you and that brings a warmth to this endeavor. But not to mislead you, the book is from DK and that means that you will have many more images than words so this is a book to view more than to read. The lAmazon discount makes this an easy purchase to start or add to one's Disney book collection. And the film frame from Brave is a nice touch as well.
This is an outstanding book! It has wonderful pictures, delightful commentary and tons of trivia! Love the "Brave" actual film snipet in the front! It is a must have for any Disney fan! While my 5 yr old can't read yet, she loves looking at the pictures and asking me what everything says. My 14 yr old loves all the trivia! My sister loves the history the book contains. Defintely a high quality book that will be treasured for years to come!
Oh no....not another Disney book!! How many ways are there to present matters related to Disney!!?? Like all similar DK books, this one presents all facets of Disneyana in a lavishly illustrated snapshot format that even I, with my extensive collection of several hundred Disney books, found fascinating and thoroughly entertaining. DK have continued their trend in high quality 'snapshot' type compendiums and this book contains all sorts of gems that even a diehard Disney fan will say "...I never knew that!".
I enjoyed reading this book a lot. great interesting details about the history of disney. layed out perfectly. My only criticism is if they're going to call it the big disney book, it needs to be expanded to 356 or 452 pages. Add feature animation list and the history of TV Animation the disney afternoon. it just needs a little expansion
Saw this book at a major book store. And glad Amazon had it in stock. The Disney collector will not be disappointed with this book. I enjoy Disney / Pixar animation and though it seems to be tailored to a younger audience, I find it a better source book than other Disney Character consolidated books.
Disney book is ideal for giving as a gift for anyone young or old.
This was for my Granddaughter at Christmas, and she loved it, as did several other members of our family.
Was for a gift, but I was able to look at it. Wonderful pictures and great addition to your coffee table.

Recently I retired and now have the time to pursue new hobbies, like wood working. For years I wish I had the skills, tools, and the time needed to be a good wood worker. I now want to build toys and things that will amaze my grandchildren. I took advantage of my prime membership to search for wood working plans. When I purchased this e-book I thought I would be getting a book of plans that included detailed drawings that have accurate measurements, a materials lists, and a set of easy to read instructions with plenty of pictures. This is not that Book.I believe that the Author Mr. Bridgewater intended to provide a set on instructions for a craftsmen. The book details the use of hand tools to produce the projects. Three different planes are used , a marking knife, hand drill, a hand scrapper and hand saws are used to produce these projects. Many of these hand tools are not the type of tools that most wood working hobbyist would even own. Most hobbyist own power tools and the only hand work is done with sand paper, The thought of taking several minutes to hand drill pilot holes instead using an air driven nail gun is foreign to most of us.No this book I believe not intended for hobbyist it was intended for a craftsmen making hairlooms by hand. I truely enjoyed reading it.
While depicting interesting marble-action games, the lack of dimensioned drawings and detailed construction instructions make the book pretty much useless for the casual woodworker interested in constructing the toys.
In today's world not many woodworkers make things by hand. The book is hard to work with, difficult to find basic stock requirements and measurements. I would not buy again.
Very fun. Good instructions.
great book
This book contains 10 ideas for games which seem to be what every child would enjoy. The problem is that most of the figures used in the book to give construction details leave a lot to be desired. Most of the photos are black and white and difficult to see any detail. The drawings are also in black and white and are also very difficault to follow.
the projects in this book require a bit more talent than an average woodworker possesses. Also, you need a well equipped shop.
I was looking for a marble book, but one on marble runs, towers, shooters, musical trees, etc. This book is rather cool, just not what i was wanting. There are some neat things in this book, such as a marble maze and a labyrinth type maze, a box with gears that pop a marble up, but none of these are things i want to make...so, if you like that type of thing then this book will suit you.

“Tells an odd story in lively prose. This book implicitly alludes to the urban revival now stretching from Portland, Ore., to Portland, Me., but whatever your thoughts on brewpubs and bike lanes, you probably haven’t read a municipal history that has a mayor ‘ready to tackle the hog problem.’ …The city McNeur depicts in Taming Manhattan is the pestiferous obverse of the belle epoque city of Henry James and Edith Wharton that sits comfortably in many imaginations. McNeur’s town is a ‘veritable manure factory’ in which some 10,000 horses each deposit up to 40 pounds of manure a day, while the East River serves as a repository for human waste… [Taming Manhattan] is a smart book that engages in the oldÂ-fashioned business of trying to harvest lessons for the present from the past.â€â€•Alexander Nazaryan, New York Times“Nearly two centuries before the Occupy Movement, New Yorkers rich and poor clashed over what shape their young city should take. In this superb history, McNeur recovers the bitter battles over feral hogs and untamed dogs, public parks, safe and pure food, effective sanitation, and the fate of the underclass. Making a safer and cleaner city for some, she concludes, also created a shadow city of poverty and filth for others. Taming Manhattan is a thrilling, vivid expedition into Gotham’s wild and often violent past.â€â€•Matthew Klingle, author of Emerald City“In the decades before the Civil War, New York was rapidly becoming the largest and most important city in the western hemisphere. But mad dogs and wild pigs roamed its streets; garbage heaps, squatters, and shantytowns were commonplace; parks and public open spaces were practically non-existent; and epidemic disease was a constant threat. Catherine McNeur’s Taming Manhattan tells us how New York was literally cleaned up and transformed from a health hazard to an emerging world city. And she does it with beautiful prose, careful research, and persuasive argument. Altogether an excellent book.â€â€•Kenneth T. Jackson, editor of The Encyclopedia of New York City“[A] fine book which make[s] a real contribution to urban biography.â€â€•Joseph Rykwert, Times Literary Supplement

This is an interesting tale of Manhattan during the early 1800s. What I found delightful was the prevalence of pigs wandering the streets. Also the battle about parks and tree spaces. This ultimately led to Central Park and no local parks as one may have found in London. The discussion of the political battles are a reminder of the continual battle amongst interests in New York. The book is short and yet presents reasonable detail. It is worth reading for any interested in the City or dealing with any municipality.
This book will give you a few of early to mid 19th century Manhattan with disputes that you may not have heard of – such as some people supporting the free range of hogs in the city – and the amount of horse maneuver and techniques for its removal and use as fertilizer. What the author does is to align the stories with the political issues: the efforts by the well-to-do resisted by those who, say, had a living to make from those hogs that could forage widely in the neighborhoods. Anyone who thinks from the odd movie or TV 1840s and 1850s city living was elegant will be dismayed by the figures the author gives of the amount of manure in the city from the horses tha the carriages and the horse cars and were everywhere. Sometimes you are looking for a source of information on a niche subject or a much larger topic and it is not easily found. In my explorations I came across Taming Manhattan and devoured it. The book is packed with information on the sociological evolution of the City. Very well researched, compact and a detailed delight. Very well done.
This book got a very good review on C-Span. The author gave an hour lecture on it and it was very interesting, quite humorous and made me realize that New York had problems of a sort dealing with the environment that equaled those of today. I haven't yet read it but the chapter headings all look interesting. A good book on the history and public health of New York in the mid-19th century but not bookish.
Well written, entertaining. Gives the reader an excellent history of NEW YORK and the forces that made it what it is today.
Reasonable account of the changes during the time period.Gained some insight from reading it.
Great
This is a nicely done study of the ways in which various social classes and interest groups contested control over Manhattan's physical environment in the decades leading up to the Civil War. Focusing on several issues, including the keeping of swine and dogs within the city, the rag-and-bones trade practiced by many of the city's poorest residents, the establishment of private parks, and the creation of Central Park, McNeur shows how campaigns to "clean up" a city that was widely regarded as squalid intersected with the interests and values of different groups of New Yorkers.Periodic (and often brutal) campaigns to rid the city's streets and sidewalks of stray or poorly controlled dogs, for instance, met resistance both from the working class and from elite New Yorkers, since the fondness for pet dogs cut across the lines of social class. Pig-keeping, on the other hand, was largely practiced only by those -- including many recent immigrants -- who were viewed as constituting "the swinish multitude." Attempts by the city government to crack down on the practice were broadly endorsed by the well-to-do, but provoked riots on the part of Manhattanites who depended on the small-scale keeping of livestock for much-needed household income. The creation of Central Park provided needed fresh air, recreation, and open space for all classes, but its construction required the displacement of the New Yorkers who were already settled within its projected boundaries (like the largely African-American community of Seneca Village) as well as the banning from the park of industries (again, practiced largely by the poor) that had been established there because they were regarded as too noisy, smelly, or land-intensive to be carried out further downtown. McNeur avoids taking sides in these quarrels, but she illuminates them and makes it clear that the "taming" of the city was not simply a matter of making necessary environmental improvements but the outcome, as well, of protracted struggles and negotiations carried out between New Yorkers who had different goals and different needs. The author writes well and her documentation is careful and thorough.
